over or under 6 wins?

And that single draft was the main difference in the 11-5 Jaguars, who made the playoffs, winning 6 fewer games in 2008, and the Ravens winning 6 more and making the AFC Championship game. The draft is major, all I'm trying to get across.

You yourself stated that Rice did nothing his first year and Flacco only played "a role". The potential of draft picks sitting on the bench doesnt win games.

The players that can make an immediate impact are either out of reach or play a position in which we already have competent play. This upcoming year is going to be rough, even if we have a very talented draft.

Why is it foolish to wait for the draft? Impact rookies do exist, and drafts are what send teams into the cellar or all the way to the top. A prime example would be in '08 - Jaguars trade with Baltimore to get Derrick Harvey, which enables the Ravens to get Flacco and Rice, who promptly beat our arses in the playoffs. This year's draft is crucial.

Very very rare for rookies to make an impact & even then don't change a team's fortunes. NEVER heard of a draft choice that bumped Vegas odds ... and they're the smart money. A trade might, but trades are also rare. Heck we got Marshall & it didn't even change our team. Flacco did OK, but really made no real difference ... beating us was about the only fools they could beat.

People said that last year too ... and every year the last decade. We just laid eggs!! Worse ... Jake Long is about the only impact player we've even drafted in 10+ years ... & he didn't even make a difference!!

RB has the best chance, if there's a decent line ... sometimes D players make a splash. But really don't change team fortunes. After a couple years, some become NFL Gladiators & do make a difference, but not first year.

I guess we'll agree to disagree. I feel over 700 yards from scrimmage is a good contribution as opposed to "nothing" , and winning 2 playoff games as a rookie QB a major role. And while getting ROY caliber players is unlikely, if we were to find our Dalton or Green or Miller I'd think this team can improve on their 6-10 mark.

That's not the point I'm trying to get across. This is an important first draft under the Philbin era, and my prediction will change depending on who we pick. If we make some trades and come away with players like Fleener or Ingram who I personally think will do good, I'll have a higher opinion of this team. On the other side, I'm not buying Sunday Ticket if we get Couples and Cousins or some garbage like that. Hence why I'm "waiting on the draft"

Fair enough. Personally, what you see is what you get imo. I don't have any faith whatsoever that Ireland is about to have a good draft.

I suppose thats not unfair. I was never suggesting Flacco wasnt effective, just that his effectiveness was a bit minimal on a team that had alot of veteran talent and his(and Rice's) worth came in later seasons. As well, like i posted earlier, the quarterback we seem to be going after is going to require time on the bench.

Its not completely out of the question that we have a homerun draft(though id say extremely doubtful), but even with one i feel we just dont have an established enough team around the rookies.

Im ready for a very Jeff Ireland draft. By that i mean, draft the safest pick in the first round, bust with our second round pick, and perhaps split the difference with our third round picks.

Either way, a losing season next year.

16 and 0 baby!!!! C'mon man this is our team!! Gotta think high and hope for the best!! I'm not even drunk... 'Yet' :brewskis:

Either way the Jaguars are set up for a decade of failure, and the Ravens have been dominant. Rice's impact wasn't immediate, but to say Flacco didn't play a role is a little ridiculous. Solid rookie year, and he's the "guy" right now. He hasn't lit the league on fire by any means, but he has been much more efficient than Boller or McNair ever were in Baltimore. QB was their achilles heel for the longest time, and that draft set them up nicely for a few years, even with an aging defense.
I was responding to a post in which you referred to Flacco and Rice as impact rookies, which they were not. Including the playoffs (19 games) the passing offense only went over 300 yards twice (both 304 yards)...their next most passing yards was 236 and 14 times their offense was under 200 yards passing. And for rushing it was McClain/McGahee combination that went for 1,573 yards and 17 TD vs. Rice 454 yards and 0 TDs. I am just saying they didn't have that big of an impact as rookies.

I totally agree with Jerry D that waiting for the draft to determine if Miami will go over in wins is pretty funny. Especially considering there are 6 probable impact rookies that will all be gone by the time Miami drafts.

Flacco has definitely gotten better. He is good, not great. Baltimore has and still lives and dies by their defense. The defense creating turnovers sets up the offense.

I will wait until the roster is actually set before making any bold predictions. The draft will go a long way to shaping the roster and it really isn't fair to make an accurate prediction on the season until after it. Though I will say that besides losing Marshall, the team is pretty much the same as last year. The same team that started slow do to the lockout, finished the season on a 6-3 run and lost to top NFL teams like the Patriots, Giants and Cowboys by a combined 7 points. Also, the 2012 schedule is very soft compared to the 2011 season. So while I can't make a final prediction on the 2012 record, it seems that 6 wins is probably on the low end.

I'd take over 6 simply because the number seems low, more than opinion. We'll probably be pegged closer to 7.

Those over/unders from 5 Dimes linked earlier in the thread were very generous on the over. I'm skeptical they were actually bettable at those prices. Not only were the numbers high but the juice was tilted severely to the over more often than not. For example, the Dolphin price was quoted at 8.5 over -195. That is roughly the equivalent of 9.5 flat, since you are asked to wager 195 to win 100 on over 8.5.

Every team could have been wagered toward the under and you'd need a weird split to lose, based on those prices. Houston was absent, which was strange. But disregarding Houston the number of wins added up to well over 256, which is the league split among 32 teams. Normally the sportsbooks do shade toward the over since the public prefers to play overs, but not to the extreme 5 Dimes used.

I checked their website and the numbers are there -- and the same as indicated in the February link -- but the prices are down. In other words, not bettable. They may have been briefly bettable until the wise guys slammed the unders and the prices were taken off the board.

The college over/unders are playable but not the pro numbers.

Sportsbooks these days are very conservative on pro over/unders in every sport, putting them up much later than a decade or two ago. Too much volatility, based on late acquisitions. In the NFL it's rare to see anything prior to the draft. Normally they begin popping up within a few weeks following the draft.

This is a longshot but perhaps 5 Dimes had a rogue employee who put up intentionally bad prices, allowing friends to take a pop at them because he was promised a kickback. Sounds fanciful but I've seen that a few times in Las Vegas, most recently at the (now extinct) Frontier about 7 years ago.

IMO, at least 8 wins this year for the Miami Dolphins.
