Past 10 1st Round Picks

I've only watched the last 2 draft but in 2012 i was yelling Quinton Couples or Melvin Ingram because Tannehills experience scared me at 8. Last year i was yelling Lane Johnson after the trade up and if they stayed at #12 i wanted DJ Haden

I want to preface this with a couple of points, for me any draft that had a QB I liked made him the primary......Finding a "real" quarterback is always objective number one in my mind.....Also, I never wanted to do any of the trade ups or downs we did......Honestly this is how each draft was for me......................

2004 - Vince Wilfork was my choice....very upset at picking Carey over him.

2005 - Quarterback year for me...loved Aaron Rogers and was pissed we took a runningback sharing a backfield from Auburn.

2006 - Wanted Antonio Cromartie over Jason Allen.

2007 - Did not believe Ted Ginn was worthy of the pick....Liked but wasn't sold on Brady Quinn...I thought Patrick Willis was the no brainer pick here.

2008 - Matt Ryan all the way......Thought the Long pick was safe but not the right pick.

2009 - Vontae Davis..one of two picks I actually agreed with on this list

2010 - Was livid at trading down...wanted Earl Thomas

2011 - Like Rogers in 2005...I was on the Kaepernick train the whole way and prayed we draft him.

2012 - Ryan Tannehill all the way.

2013 - Wanted to stay put and draft Star Lotulelei

1. Eifert, though to be fair trading up for Jordan wasn't on my radar at all
2. Kueckly
3. wanted to trade down for Ingram, would have taken Amukamara if no trading partners
4. there were a ton of players I liked in this one but Odrick was not on my radar at all. I think Rolando McClain was my favorite for pick 12 but I believe he was gone before we picked, thank god.

2013 Dion Jordan...Jordan was the guy to take after trading up... Still needs time to reach potential
2012 Ryan Tannehil... Tannehill was the player i wanted
2011 Mike Pouncey... I thought pouncy was a very solid pick at the time
2010 Jared Odrick... I wanted to stay put and not trade down and take earl thomas
2009 Vontae Davis... I was a huge clay matthews fan and wanted him
2008 Jake Long... I wanted chris long
2007 Ted Ginn... I was wanting either patrick willis or the best qb avail. (which was quinn)
2006 Jason Allen
2005 Ronnie Brown
2004 Vernon Carey

2004- Vince Wilfork
2005- Aaron Rodgers
2006- Tamba Hali
2007- Patrick Willis
2008- Matt Ryan
2009- Clay Matthews
2010- Earl Thomas
2011- Nate Solder
2012- Ryan Tannehill
2013- Eddie Lacy

I find it funny how everyone points to who they wanted and they are all studs...the only player I see listed that someone wanted that was a bust was Brady Quinn and possibly Mark Ingram (but I think he's been more of a byproduct of who drafted him)- we should all be GM's - that said I'd be interested in who people wanted that they are glad the Fins didn't draft....

here's a couple of mine....
I wanted Ingram in 2011 - I'm glad we took Pouncey instead of him
2010 - I wanted Jahvid Best - damn am I glad that didn't happen - I thought he was going to be a star!
2009 - I did like Vontae/Matthews and Nicks but I also thought K Britt was going to be real good - glad that didn't happen - he's a thug!

Wasn't thrilled with Jordan, or Tannehill, but wasn't mad either. Was ok with Pouncey. Loved the Odrick pick, though I was hoping we wouldn't trade back and I really wanted Earl Thomas. I did want Vontae. I didn't follow the draft as closely before that, so not going to comment.

i think almost everyone on here wanted thomas lol and i too liked pouncey and vontae. i like the odrick pick even though looking back it wish we could have gotten a more impact player like thomas. tannehill is our starting qb and dion jordan has a bright future. hell, vontae should still be on the team imo fyouIreland

Aaron Rodgers suddenly is about 100x more popular than he was in spring 2005, not long after I joined this forum. Some posters liked him, notably ckparrothead, but approaching the draft I'm not sure I remember anybody saying he should be our pick at #2.

I didn't want Rodgers at that spot because I thought his mechanics were terrible and I attended a game his senior year against USC in which he threw nothing but 5 or 10 yards passes. Every time somebody was available downfield he refused to attempt the pass. It was so pathetic that sorority girls sitting near me in the Coliseum were literally laughing at Rodgers: "Why didn't he throw it? That was a touchdown. What a wimp."

Merril Hoge broke down that game on ESPN approaching the draft, spotlighting all the downfield plays Rodgers refused to attempt. He used it as ammunition to doubt Rodgers. Within a few years, Rodgers wasn't the same guy at all, either in mechanics or playing style. But don't let all these backfitting goofs pretend they would have taken him at #2. I might as well claim I would have loaded up on Apple stock beginning when Jobs returned. Actually, I did.

I liked Cadillac Williams and would have taken him, as I stated at the time. I still think he was a better back and better fit for what we were trying to do, run the ball often and effectively. Brown was too much of an all around guy, which leads to plenty of nothing. No identity. Cadillac got off to a great start but severe injuries altered his career.

In 2004 I loved Vince Wilfork and would have taken him. Defensive tackles are my favorite position in football. More than anything, I nearly drove off the road heading from Palm Springs to San Diego when the ESPN radio host said the Dolphins traded a 4th to Minnesota to move up one spot. Spielman should have been thrown off a cliff. The worst poker player in the world isn't that incompetent.

Some of the other ones I don't even remember. I was fine with Vontae Davis. I didn't want pop gun arm Matt Ryan at #1 so Jake Long seemed preferable above the other options. In 2012 I wanted Luke Kuechly and stated that here. Last year I wanted Eifert or Richardson at 12 if Tavon Austin didn't make it to that spot. After the trade up I would have taken Lane Johnson.

Ted Ginn was a surprise at that spot. He wouldn't have been my choice but I liked the player. In that era the coast to coast college weapons were Reggie Bush, Devon Hester, Desean Jackson and Ted Ginn. We got one of them. I was satisfied. Only when Ginn showed up and was obviously too leggy and not exactly rugged did I realize he was a cut below the other three.

The one pick that really irked me was Jason Allen. No special qualities. Saban needs 30 premium picks a year because he's pedestrian with only one.

I agree 100% with what is in bold. I really did believe Rodgers was worthy of the #2 pick. Part of the blame you have for him was being in Tedford's dink and dunk offense. You can't blame him for that.

Lane Johnson was my #1 rated player in the draft last year.

2005-To many, Ronnie Brown was the obvious choice at 2, and at the time I was fine with it. I remember the rumors being that Nick Saban was in love with Alex Smith and would have taken him if the 9ers went a different direction. In hindsight we should have taken the QB from Cal that slid to the Packers.

Of all our draft mistakes this was the worst, pro staff should have seen the potential

2005 thru 2007 I was big on trading back because it was a known fact that Ronnie Brown and Jason Allen were injury prone college players and were so in the NFL. Ronnie Brown was talented though and was a good pick when healthy and we needed a running back but I was hoping for that trade back if that was available. Ginn was to small and was part time in college and played that way in the NFL. We had so many needs and that was a big reach, I remember thinking a QB back then. 2004 Carey was a decent pick EXCEPT we choked and gave the Vikings a 4 round pick to move up one spot. I liked the value for what we got from Ireland and probably was most critical of the Odrick pick considering we had Paul S. And Randy Starks on board plus I noticed that Odrick was injured in college a bit and sure enough his rookie year he was too but has come on to stay healthy. Dion Jordan I questioned last year with our needs on offensive line and or a solid running back plus we were stacked on the defensive line. I liked the value we recieved for trading up though. Really Ireland 1st round pick were the best overall that we have had the past 20 plus years. Amazing how bad most of his 2nd round picks panned out though. Taylor injured, Martin could not play and was a a Moma boy, Daniel Thomas never developed for the position as a power back, even though that he has the size he played more scat back in college and has played better only when he has played that way in the NFL, Mssi was another miscast to a degree but has played better as a linebacker than DE but has stayed nicked up, Sean Smith great size and tangibles but a bit of a head case never consistent and that DE from Clemson the year we drafted Long was all talent but pure lazy. 3rd round very spotty Vernon probably the best pick last year, and then Ireland did his best work I rounds 4 the or later plus fairly decent in free agency with Bush, Wake, Bess , Carp, Starks and Grimes. Trading those 2 second rounders picks a could o f years ago was a mistake for the wide reciever from the Broncos who could certainly play but his antics on and off the field far out wieght what his talent brought to the table.

2013 Dion Jordan - Kenny Vaccaro (before trade-up)
2012 Ryan Tannehil - Luke Keuchly
2011 Mike Pouncey - Didn't care, whole shopping list was gone.
2010 Jared Odrick - Earl Thomas (Dez Bryant after trade-down)
2009 Vontae Davis - Clay Matthews
2008 Jake Long - Matt Ryan, but was happy with Long too.
2007 Ted Ginn - Patrick Willis
2006 Jason Allen - Don't even remember
2005 Ronnie Brown - Don't remember
2004 Vernon Carey - Don't know

I think I started paying attention to the offseason when Cam Cameron became the coach. Otherwise I was too young. All I knew was the regular buzz about the first couple of picks and what I saw/heard on ESPN.

2004/ No Draft Board
2005/ Rodgers/ Brown
2006/ Lawson/ Mangold/ Cromartie
2007/ Patrick Willis/ ZT was coming to the end of his career and so willis would be the pick right.
2008/ J Long or Chris Long
2009/ V Davis
2010/ E Thomas, we friggen blew it.
2011/ Pouncey
2012/ Tannehill
2013/ Eifert

I can tell you this, back then I remember hearing that Rodgers could fall but everything I heard was that Rodgers was the consensus number 1 pick all throughout the process... especially after Matt Leinart went back to school. When Smith went first, I remember thinking that Rodgers may be worth the shot, but at the time we desperately needed an RB (Note even though this wasn't THAT long ago, back then people still put a huge premium on RB)
