Past 10 1st Round Picks

I believe that since 2000, Miami has only picked 3 offensive playmaker positions (QB, RB, TE, WR) in the first round (Ryan Tannehill, Ted Ginn Jr, and Ronnie Brown). And, they only picked a total of about 8-10 (I forget the exact number) offensive playmakers in the first 3 rounds since 2000... and the majority of those players were busts. It's no wonder that the Fins have been terrible at scoring points; they concentrated mostly on defense in the early rounds of all those drafts.

2013 Dion Jordan - Shocking, I was confused at first because I thought for sure Lane Johnson. But then got excited about the potential. Then quickly fell back to earth during the season when we couldn't protect Tannehill to save our lives and Jordan wasn't really producing. I still think this can turn out good for us. Wake is getting older and we can prolong his career by having a deep rotation with him, Vernon, and Jordan.

2012 Ryan Tannehill - Happy with the pick, 2 years in a row we picked who we were expected to pick.

2011 Mike Pouncey - Happy with the pick, was expected so it was nice to have a not-shocking draft day.

2010 Jared Odrick - LOVED the trade down to get extra picks. Didn't love the pick, thought it was OK. I wanted Jerry Hughes or Taylor Mays. Shows how much I know. Odrick has outperformed them both.

2009 Vontae Davis - Preferred H. Nicks, C. Matthews over V. Davis, but he was third out of those three, so I didn't hate it. Just felt we could have used a WR or pass rusher more.

2008 Jake Long - I actually liked this pick a lot and was happy with it. We got lucky with Pennington falling in our laps in the summer and then had the miraculous playoff run but looking back M. Ryan would have been the pick.

2007 Ted Ginn - WTF!!! AGAIN!!! Hated this pick. Wanted a QB so obviously B. Quinn but I could have justified P. Willis or D. Revis in my mind at the time. Of course those two are potentiall HOFers and both Quinn and Ginn have been busts.

2006 Jason Allen - WTF!!! Anyone but him. I really wanted to trade up for J. Cutler but would have been OK with A. Cromartie, M. Lawson or S. Holmes. Any of those three would have been better. Hated this pick.

2005 Ronnie Brown - Well I expected Brown or Braylon Edwards here. Obviously, Aaron Rodgers would have been the pick. Was okay with Brown, but envious of the 49ers draft right away because they got a QB, O-line help in the 2nd, and Gore in the 3rd.

2004 Vernon Carey - Was thinking it was crazy to trade up with New England - why would they make a deal with us unless they would benefit and we would suffer? Well, they were right. I preferred Wilfork but we did desperately need o-line help so I was OK with the pick.

Aaron Rodgers suddenly is about 100x more popular than he was in spring 2005, not long after I joined this forum. Some posters liked him, notably ckparrothead, but approaching the draft I'm not sure I remember anybody saying he should be our pick at #2.

I didn't want Rodgers at that spot because I thought his mechanics were terrible and I attended a game his senior year against USC in which he threw nothing but 5 or 10 yards passes. Every time somebody was available downfield he refused to attempt the pass. It was so pathetic that sorority girls sitting near me in the Coliseum were literally laughing at Rodgers: "Why didn't he throw it? That was a touchdown. What a wimp."

Merril Hoge broke down that game on ESPN approaching the draft, spotlighting all the downfield plays Rodgers refused to attempt. He used it as ammunition to doubt Rodgers. Within a few years, Rodgers wasn't the same guy at all, either in mechanics or playing style. But don't let all these backfitting goofs pretend they would have taken him at #2. I might as well claim I would have loaded up on Apple stock beginning when Jobs returned. Actually, I did.

I liked Cadillac Williams and would have taken him, as I stated at the time. I still think he was a better back and better fit for what we were trying to do, run the ball often and effectively. Brown was too much of an all around guy, which leads to plenty of nothing. No identity. Cadillac got off to a great start but severe injuries altered his career.

In 2004 I loved Vince Wilfork and would have taken him. Defensive tackles are my favorite position in football. More than anything, I nearly drove off the road heading from Palm Springs to San Diego when the ESPN radio host said the Dolphins traded a 4th to Minnesota to move up one spot. Spielman should have been thrown off a cliff. The worst poker player in the world isn't that incompetent.

Some of the other ones I don't even remember. I was fine with Vontae Davis. I didn't want pop gun arm Matt Ryan at #1 so Jake Long seemed preferable above the other options. In 2012 I wanted Luke Kuechly and stated that here. Last year I wanted Eifert or Richardson at 12 if Tavon Austin didn't make it to that spot. After the trade up I would have taken Lane Johnson.

Ted Ginn was a surprise at that spot. He wouldn't have been my choice but I liked the player. In that era the coast to coast college weapons were Reggie Bush, Devon Hester, Desean Jackson and Ted Ginn. We got one of them. I was satisfied. Only when Ginn showed up and was obviously too leggy and not exactly rugged did I realize he was a cut below the other three.

The one pick that really irked me was Jason Allen. No special qualities. Saban needs 30 premium picks a year because he's pedestrian with only one.

I promise you I argued for Rogers then...if we had the archives I could prove it...I remember arguing with the gurus over Rogers...but think what you want.

2004 – Wanted DT Vince Wilfork and RB Steven Jackson but was ok with Carey. All in all not a bad pick.
2005 – It seemed foregone we were to draft Ronnie Brown. I was high on QB Aaron Rodgers, but I DID NOT like QB Alex Smith AT ALL and was relieved when 49ers took him. I remember being very high on WR Braylon Edwards and wanted him most I believe.
2006 – Can’t remember who I wanted but it sure as hell wasn’t Allen, I remember thinking/saying who? I remember that I liked LB Chad Greenway and WR Santonio Holmes. HORRIBLE PICK…
2007 – Wanted QB Quinn badly but thought LB Patrick Willis would have been best choice, but I remember being shocked at Ginn there!! Thought it was way early.
2008 – I liked QB Matt Ryan and Both Longs, but I wanted DE Chris Long with the pick the most.
2009 – Was ok with the Davis pick, but not ecstatic. Went into the draft wanting LB Clay Matthews or LB Cushing.
2010 – Hated this trade down. I wanted in order…either WR Dez Bryant, DB Earl Thomas, WR Demaryius Thomas, OL Maurkice Pouncey. Horrible trade down!! When we traded I was indifferent…
2011 – Liked the Pouncey pick a lot at the time, still do. Wanted DT Nick Fairley but he went a few before our pick so Pouncey was my #1 choice here, really liked Jonathan Baldwin too.
2012 – Liked the RT pick but wasn’t CRAZY about it only because I didn’t see him play live. I liked WR Michael Floyd and DE Quinton Coples at the time.
2013 – Wanted TE Tyler Eiffert with that pick, when we traded up I liked WR Tavon Austin there, but was fine with the Jordan pick too.

2004 we need oline we needed DL. we needed everything. Wilfork was by far highest rated guy on my board, I had Carey rated as late first round to 2nd round pick.
Trading the 4th was beyod stupid. Also was a big fan of Dockett surprised he fell to third. No OL was worth that pick that year at the time. Chris Snee was highest rated OL left on board.

2005- How you draft a guy that is the second best rb on his team that high just makes me wanna throw up. I liked Braylon Edwards but taking a WR high like that he needed to show more in college. I ACTUALLY HAD dERRICK Johnson as my highest rated guy and would have took him right there. Almost nobody on this board talked up Aaron Rodgers or said we should have taken him. I actually said Rodgers fell too far and would have rather had him over Brown who was nothing special in college.

2006- I wanted to punch Saban when I heard Allen's name who much like Jordan got plenty of hype as a draft pick just because we took him. Many on board loved Lawson that year. I wanted Cromartie or Greenway. Really preferred Greenway.
Marcus Mcneil was a T I thought was worth a first rounder. liked Chad Jackson but only in a trade down.

2007-Theodore Ginn oh my , before draft I never thought about Quinn because I thought he would be gone. I was never a huge Quinn fan . Many liked Willis and he did look like a great pick.Wanted Levi brown based on who I thought would be there. We needed a QB so when Quinn was available I thought he was worth a chance. Hated beck pick and he was everything I thought he would be and more. The people that love our draft every year talked about how great this duo would be for years. I wanted Rice in second round. Mess of draft.

2008- Was split. Long was the safe pick and I was ok with the pick but felt ryan was the better pick.Think Ryan would have been fine here but not as successful as fast as he was in Atlanta.
Tough Guy who has won with lesser talent in college. Many wanted Ghoulston and Chris Long

2009- Wanted Hakeem Nicks, I also like Brace ugh. Didn't really want Davis but was solid pick based on value and need. Wanted Nicks bad.

2010- Wanted Dez Bryant then we traded down hoped he would fall and then was hoping for Dan Williams, was okay with Odrick.

2011-Phil taylor was a guy I liked a lot never wanted Pouncey that high but he was a good pick based on who was left. Quinn seemed like a guy that would have elevated us. Also Liked Prince akumera

2012- Wanted Tannehill and we got him.

2013- originally wanted milliner at 12 or Xavier Rhodes. Way draft turned out would have took Star or Jones at 12.
Would never have moved up unless it was for one of the two tackles . 3-16 to me were similar graded players with exception of Star

2011 Mike Pouncey: ....Wanted Pouncey.
