Permission Denied to Interview Pace?

Here's what I know about Gaine. This is based on what I've read from Jeff Darlington, various local reporters, and seen on the Twitter rumor mill, etc.:

1. Gaine and Philbin supposedly have a good working relationship.
2. He is respected inside the building.
3. He is the guy who got credit for 'finding' Cam Wake and pounding the table for the signing, supposedly.
4. He has people skills and folks actually like him. Joe Rose, who has absolutely eviscerated Jeff Ireland on his show (including for being an asshole) has brought him up a few times and mentioned that he likes him.
5. You saw him on Hard Knocks a couple of times. They showed him out on the field talking to a few players. He was trying to give them some positive reinforcement. I thought he came across well, unlike... basically everyone else.

The big question for me is whether or not Gaine is good at his job. I think that he'd be a big improvement over Jeff simply on a people skills basis, and I can't really imagine he'd do a worse job from a personnel standpoint. I wouldn't be upset if he's the hire. We know that he's NOT A SNAKE, and that's a good sign.

If we promote Gaine, what will really concern me is the OC hire.

The Saint's are within their right to refuse permission to Miami. It makes no difference if Pace wants the job or not. The rules for GM candidates are not the same as coaching candidates. If the exec is under contract, the club can refuse any interview requests, even if it is a promotion.

Under Contract. Except as may be otherwise provided in such contract, a club is not obligated to grant another club permission to discuss employment with a high-level employee if he or she is under contract, even if the second club is prepared to offer him or her a position of greater responsibility within the category of High-Level Club Employees. Clubs may negotiate a right of first refusal.

If he's given total control of roster they can't deny, but they can also deny if he has no interest. Similar thing happened with Tampa and Chris Ballard. It was announced KC denied the interview, but it later came out they were going to let them talk to Ballard but Ballard had no interest because he didn't want to move his family.

They can deny, even if he's given total control. See above post.

I think we were denied because he's not interested in the job.

Near impossible. You take the interview even if only to use the interest from other teams in future contract leverage.

If he isn't interested then we don't want him, he, by not being interested, is admitting he is incapable of running a quality program.

Thats a great summation JD.
We have established that Gaine is a good people person and operates well within a bureaucracy/corporation.
He is liked and will be a positive spokesman to this. This is undoubtedly a positive.
But there are negative elements to this...
If you are dick, like Ireland, there is no leeway your results speak for themselves.
Generally speaking people who are, nice, often get a pass.
One example is that if a patient likes his/her physician they generally don't mind if they make mistakes.

My primary issue with Gaine...
We all know the about the one anectodal success, Wake, but one success doesn't build a dynasty.
Where does he stand any the numerous personnel failures that had traveled through Miami.

Fair enough. For what it's worth, I would prefer to hire a candidate from outside the organization. However, if Gaine winds up being the new GM, I will still feel as if the team made an improvement. We will have gone from someone who is awful at his job and who is total jagoff to someone who may or may not be good at the job but is NOT a jagoff. That's an upgrade.

No doubt.
The one benefit about being the "internal" candidate is that we should have documentation about where Gaine stood on various personnel decisions.
Where all the others we will see a highlight reel, with Gaine you are should have everything.

The Devil you know is better than the Devil you don't.

That's a heck of a low standard that constitutes an upgrade.........but I agree with you

Maybe he isn't interested and he asked the Saints to help him out by releasing this statement so he doesn't look like a d***.
