I figured some of you guys would appreciate this...
Where I live here in Maine, there is an impending ice storm on the way for Sunday. I refuse to miss Fins games under any conditions. Whether they are preseason or regular season games, I will miss family gatherings, cancel appointments or call in sick in order to not to miss a Dolphins game. I have not missed a football Sunday since I was in college.
That brings me to this weekend. Weather can always threaten a football Sunday. There is about .50 inches of predicted ice on the way. It starts Sunday morning and it goes through the afternoon to about 5pm.
I have taken all of the following precautions so not to miss the Dolphins/Bills game:
I have two de-icing products for the dish. One shoots further, but the other can still hit the dish, but "prevents" re-freezing. I am going to climb out my man room window, on to the porch....in an ice storm mind you...and spray that thing so not to lose reception.
If my dish does become incapacitated, I then have to go to my Field Pass subscription. While I cannot stand him, I might have to go to the Jimmy Cefalo call.
If we lose power, I have three, count them, three laptops charged plus an iPad ready to go along with a charged cell phone, mobile Hot Spot to attempt to listen to the game.
If the cell runs out of juice, the car has a full tank of gas in which I can charge the phone while the hot spot works, while giving me the juice for the radio broadcast.
If none of that stuff works, I will go into work where there is an emergency generator that I could see the local game (Texans and Broncos) and listen to Cefalo.
You can accuse me of a lot of things, but not being dedicated to the Dolphins is not one of them.
We had bad thunderstorms coming through two weeks ago. I pulled out my generator, tested it and had it already connected. If we lost our DirectTV signal, I had my laptop already set up with the Sunday Ticket app. If my local internet connection was lost, then I would have used my iPad Air with 4G service. I have a sign that I update every week with my consecutive game streak that I have watched live. My last game I didn't watch live was Sept 7, 1997. I was at the beach and let my friends come to my house to watch it, they called me and I listened to the entire OT win against the Oilers over the phone. Long distance calls used to cost a lot! My favorite game was driving 3 hours home in 2007 to see our 0-13 Fins beat the Ravens. I can still see Camarillo running with the ball. Stay strong, I believe you will see the game.
Hayden what part of Maine are you in ? I am in Texas now, but grew up in Millinocket.
I have the Sunday Ticket via DTV? Can I stream something if I already buy through them or is it a separate cost..
Hayden - I know that you have family up in Maine, but maybe they could handle the 83 degrees of South Florida, in preference to the ice storm. You don't have to live shivering in the tundra surrounded by chowder slurping, Tom Brady fawning, language mangling, Patriots fans and other cretins. Even Maine's former President George H W and Barbara Bush of Kennebunkport, don't stick around for the winter.
Good luck for minimal disruption resulting from the ice storm. Just advise our latest South Florida newcomer (and hero), #31 Michael Thomas when you have had enough and he'll get your good buddy Jeff and the Dolphin welcoming committee to set things up. His old Stanford buddy, Jonathan Martin may personally accommodate you at his snakepit, but be warned, he can be a tad sensitive.
I've got SuperFan package and if you log into your DirecTV account you can watch all the games except the local games. I'd look into that tonight.
Really? Cost approx? Does it play well?
It is excellent on a good Internet connection. I think it was 99 more for the season, it's a great insurance policy plus I think it adds the Red Zone channel.
