Peyton Manning as GM?

"I'm better than Tannebaum"

*Payton Manning, singing the Nationwide jingle and he wouldn't be wrong.

Payton Manning is not a product of this franchise. you don't bypass the heart/soul/face of this storied team in Dan Marino for an interloper. that's how we ended up with Tannenbaum. Ross has always been a man who 'elevates from within' at Related... he's never done that once with this football team and it's ball-kicking him every single year that goes by. at 75, you'd think he'd learned that by now. MAKE MARINO THE VP. get a Dolphin to run the Dolphins!

Marino lasted 3 weeks the last time he was in our front office
before his resignation...Not sure it would be different today

So the obvious next question is whether he carries the credentials needed outside of just being the player he was for 18 NFL seasons. And most of the people who’ve been around him will answer that question for you quickly. One Broncos staffer told me, “There’d honestly be no one better.”

Manning has prepared for it, and had a front-row seat for four years in Denver to watch John Elway, with whom he has a similar background (although Elway did run an Arena League team). Those who were around Manning as a player watched him keep close tabs on every facet of the NFL. The draft. Free agency. The coaching industry. The scouting community. All of it. And the rest, he can learn as a guy who brings experience as a player that very few of the planet ever could.

“He’ll be extremely successful in anything he chooses to do because of the person is, how smart he is and how hard he works,” said one personnel man who worked with him in Indy. “He’ll be extremely well prepared, have done research on the job and an understanding of what the job entails. And he wouldn’t go into the job with unanswered questions or just to try it. He goes into everything with the deepest commitment, desire and work ethic. He’s always seen and understood the biggest picture, and he’ll set a vision and high standard for an organization. Winning will be paramount, and he’ll grind and work, he won’t be a figurehead or a guy that hangs out with the owner. He loves the nuts and bolts of football, and knows and loves the game, players and coaches. He’ll be able to put the whole landscape together from a uniquely informed perspective, knows what it takes and will attract top people. He won’t suffer other agendas and obviously has the résumé to set that line. The challenge won’t be football. It’ll be if there are spots in the organization that don’t meet his standard or share his commitment.”

We know Gase is his guy, at this point I hope Gase goes to Ross and says get this bum Tannenbaum outta here and hire Peyton or we won't ever win ****!

Do any of the 'players' we're advocating for have any GM experience, or at the very least, training? Doesn't seem like it.

Tannenbaum had plenty of experience....

Would much rather have Danny boy as our gm. Not only was dan a much better qb but Peyton was known for being a huge x and o guy while dan was known for being a huge aggression guy. we need a gm who will bring in guys with an aggressive mindset.

If anything Peyton should be the gm at indy, his x and o mindset is pretty much what indy is usually known for as a team, x and o and finesse. Finesse isn't the dolphins way, it never works out here.

I love all these 'our guys need to be more aggressive' type comments. <Snark> For F*#Ks sake, how much more aggressive could you humanly be to make it in the NFL? What do you want out of our players, to hide a guy in their jersey and shoot someone? Does it only count if the umpire is looking? The only people more aggressive are to old when they retire from a Seal Team. </Snark>

Peyton Manning hasn’t done anything to prove he’s worthy of being anything in his post playing days. Elway got lucky when the late Broncos owner entrusted him with running the team. Elway caught lightening in a bottle after inheriting a great defense and good coaching staff. Manning dropped in his lap after being released and promptly led Denver to a SB victory. I’m not sure I’d want an unproven person in Manning running things. It’s too much that Miami, already has a lawyer in Tannenbaum with minimal NFL experience outside of his prior stint with the Jets; I’m not sure I’d take a chance on Peyton. Two wrongs don’t make it right. As for Dan Marino, no thanks to him either. Although in his brief stint as Dolphins GM, he’s on record as liking Philip Rivers. Miami’s needs to get the next Operations Manager right. Grier has done fine so far, thanks to his scouting background. I think he’ll surprise even more moving forward.

I would much rather see Peyton form an investment group and buy the Dolphins. His siblings and father alone could probably get the cash needed to offer Ross a couple billion for the team. The way things are going, Ross might take it.

I feel Payton Manning would be a tremendous asset to our team.

He is so good, that trying to fit into an existing type of position would either limit his contributions or require him to take responsibility for work that is secondary to his interests. I suggest a new position be created. I would call it the Advisor to the Head Coach. This is not an assistant, but an independent advisor. This would be something like being on a board of directors, but in this case the board would be Payton and the CEO would be Adam Gase. It would be entirely play related.

All organizations require a management structure to function reliably. In this organization he would do just what his title says. This position would allow Payton to focus on plays for both the Offense and Defense. Remember that for his entire career he ran an offence and read defenses. Let him continue to do that without imposing any secondary constraints on him as part of the job. He would advise the head coach about plays, their potential, new wrinkles that would make them more effective and defensively, what could work best against opposing teams defenses.

Payton would interact with the head coach in developing new plays or could respond to specific requests from the head coach about plays and play related subjects. Payton and the coach would have free access to each other. This is an advisory position only, with all decisions and responsibility residing with the head coach.

This would free Payton from player supervision and other administrative details, while allowing him do what he loves - thinking about football plays and how they interact. He might expand his input into draft selection, free agent selection, Quarterback development and long term team planning, along with anything else if he feels is pertinent to play development.

What made Payton's relationship with Adam Gase special was that the two of them shared the same mentality and work ethic. They have earned each others respect. This position would let Payton follow his football related interests without imposing on him those normal management functions that are typically more clerical, or off target. He gets all the good without any of the bad associated with most jobs. I think this might be his dream job. He could even take the weekends off, if you could keep him from following the games.

This type of position would probably not work as well for Payton with any other team, because of the potential for friction with a head coach.

Making a position like this available for Payton would be great not only for the results we could expect, but it would also identify the Dolphins as a leader, not a follower in the competitive world of the NFL. I have no doubts other teams would eventually create a position like this for their teams It has the advantage of not affecting the cap!

I wonder if there is a chance that Payton would be willing to pay the Dolphins for this kind of opportunity?
