They have our D at #4 overall. The breakdown is #14 vs the run, #3 in pass rush, #11 in coverage, and #8 in penalties. This is based on their eyeball test on each players individual play, and then combined. CB's are included vs the run, DE's in coverage, etc.

Individual Ranks Overall

4-3 DE- Wake #13, Shelby #27, OV #38. Jordan does not have enough snaps.

DT/NT- Starks #5, Odrick #9, Soliai #11

4-3 OLB- Wheeler #19, Misi #23

ILB- Ellerbe #33

CB- Grimes #11, Carroll #27, Wilson #57

S- Clemons #29, Jones #63

Again, this is based on individual play, and not stats like yardage, points, etc.

Agree or Disagree?

Not sure how you can substantiate an entire defense's ranking based on individual play when how they perform as a unit is not only far more important but a better barometer.

I disagree that you can take a bunch of individual ratings, add them together, then apply them to a whole defensive unit.

I'm not sure what to make of this. I don't see how any of the numbers you posted for those individuals equates to #4 overall. Am I missing something?

#4 ? I'll disagree. Some guys are having decent years but as a team they are not 4th best at this point .

It's looking at the D from a different perspective. The individual parts are playing well but, that has not yet translated to the team's overall stats. This makes sense to me with all the new pieces still not fitting into the bigger picture. For me, it's more of VG things to come as opped to what we are doing now.

Doesnt matter if we rank #1 in everything, we are still 3-3.

Those safety rankings are sad.

Their ranking of Wheeler seems high, and Ellerbe sounds low.

It's sick how strong Miami's DT's are. Miami should try to keep that crew together. Strength of the whole team.

Miami should keep those DTs together. Hopefully Miami stops playing wackamole with the roster this offseason. You know, fix one spot while another falls apart, which is the hallmark of Jeff Ireland's work.

This shows that the whole does not equal the sum of its parts...

It's a combination of our individual ranks vs other team's individual ranks. For example, at CB we have Grimes at #11, Carroll at 27, and Wilson at #57. If another team has a #1 CB but, their others are ranked way below our #2 and #3 CB's, we would be ranked higher in coverage.

I agree with you fish...as an eyeball test..the pass rush has been less effective (mainly I think from injury) then I thought it would be, the secondary (Patterson injury and how much longer do we have to depend on a Jimmy Wilson? hopefully the young CB's can eventually help) I don't want to even think about the third down defense etc..defending the screen and tight ends. All that being said I think the main reason why we are not 4-2 or 5-1 more has to do with the offensive problems.

Those rankings kind of line up with what I've seen. I think our two worst defensive starters are Jones and Wheeler in that order.

Jones has struggled very badly and Wheeler is terrible in pass protection.

Exactly, so far the pieces are there but the puzzle is not complete. Players are playing well but, we have all seen many being out of position on 3rd downs, missed tackles, blown coverage, etc. I believe this shows something good for the future of our team, and worth a discussion.

The bottom line is still our record and points given up, which you would have to think will improve once everyone Comes Together.

Lets hope that happen sooner rather then later and they dig themselves into a hole they can't get out of.

I believe it is high when you consider all aspects of the D but, fair on the individual performances. Hopefully, one will catch up with the other.
