PFF Tannehill analysis (3rd Ranked Passer)

He hit Landry in stride pefectly in the third quarter. He dropped a ball perfectly on a deep pass to stop-my-Hartline who flubbed it. He put another ball right in Dion Sims hands against NE in the end zone. Wallace couldn't keep his feet in bounds; that throw was fine. You say you see QB's making these throws every week. Sure you do - in the highlites. If you watch an entire game of even the best guys, they routinely miss throws. Underthrows, overthrows, behind the receiver. I see it a lot. The difference often is that they keep attacking downfield and that allows them to make big plays, not 5 and 7 yard gains repeatedly. Give this offense more than two games. I am not buying he cannot make these throws. Sometimes your receiver has to man up and snatch the ball and not break stride. Players like Hartline and Miller are awful at doing this. If they don't round their routes so much that would help too. Matthew has a TD on Sunday if he came back to the ball to want it more than the defender. The ball was a foot behind where it should have been but give me a break. I watched Jerry Rice catch that pass from Young for his record breaking throw at the goaline on NFLN last night and it was badly underthrown but he came back and attacked the ball in the air between two defenders. Watch the better receivers and how they snatch balls behind them and keep moving forward. Gates, Fitzgerald, Megatron, Julio Jones, etc. They all adjust to the ball and don't wait for it to hit them on every throw. This is a shared issue, not just on RT.

Exceptional point. Landry is probably the only receiver (maybe Gibson) that will go after the ball. That throw to Wallace was a TD with any other top WR in the league. Wallce DID ball up big time last week with the one handed grab, but I shouldn't have to be in disbelief when he does it. It should be a little more common to see our WR's fighting for the ball.

I'm a Tannehill fan and I'm not worried at this point. It's still early in the season and everyone is still new in the offense. But thus far Tannehill's performance has been subpar. Thus far he hasn't been good enough.

I have hope and faith. I'm a huge Lazor fan and have been since he was OC at UVa. He will get this right.

But so far Tannehill still throws his crossing patterns too conservatively a tad behind where the ball should be delivered. This results in WR's slowing down and catching the ball with no momentum and little run after the catch opportunities. This is a recurring issue with Tannehill and needs to be fixed.

He has problems with gauging proper depth on deep balls. This is akin to someone playing pool (billiards) and always having the right angle but not getting right how hard to hit the cue ball.

This is exacerbated by his inexperience throwing touch passes, putting air under the ball, and dropping the ball in a bucket on deep throws. He will just have to work through that. It will come ... but it isn't coming overnight.

Again, I have faith in Tannehill. I have even more faith in Lazor.

Well said...totally agree.

It also is a pure fact....he has had a high number of key drops.

Does that mean he has played great?....no.

But it not as bad as his detractors state....and would look a bit different had those key passes not been dropped....or fumbled as well.

That was the point of the article which is missed by the people who already have their minds made up.....and closed....regarding Ryan Tannehill.

I don't think it adds anything to the discussion when you call anyone out like that. Honestly it just makes you look bad.

Like let me give you an example: RTSuperBowl2014, aka Wallace17Miami, is here specifically to troll people like you and to get you to 'call him out' and get upset with him. I know that because I've known the guy for years and it's just something he does to get his kicks. All he's doing is making you look like a fool, and I think in the process you're also trashing a lot of people who are here to legitimately talk football by lumping them in with the trolls.

Point taken. Thanks. Time to dial it back.

First I want to state I hope Hoops is right, he takes a lot of time in his posts and appears to have a ton of football knowledge and on tope of that I want him to be right so we can stop this revolving door every 3-4 years of a new coach or QB. I also am holding out hope on Lazor to assit Ryann T. overcome these timing issues of throwing the ball behind recievers and improving his deep ball. After reading a ton of posts regarding RT it appears these have been issues he has been dealing with since his days in college. The big question or bear in the room is can Ryan T. improve or overcome in these areas in his performance and thats a huge question. I know in my days of coaching organized little league there was a big push to get kids involved and practicing early in their careers to create what is called muscle memory so as a athlete they can physcially react without thinking so much in certain situations. Ryann T. is currently 26 and has a certain style of throwing that needs to be improved and just how much of that can happen, how much can be unwound? I don't know thats for sure. You also have to look at Nick Foles for the Eagles who was a 3rd round pick and just outplayed Luck and a bunch of other teams last year and ask yourself is RT better than that kid and if so can we build a team like their and will it be good enough. Currently though my bigger concern about RT is after reviewing many of the posts on this site is that 3 other what I call football minds that I repect as much as Hoops are not supporting Ryan T. as a great potential long term prospect with great upside for the phins and thats Slim, CkParrott and Awsi Dooger. Thats 3 to 1 odds and again I hope Hoops opinion prevails but RT certainly needs to pick up the pace and without Moreno to help him out these next few weeks we are going to see the real RT thats for sure.

Let me add....Hardline needs to be replaced next year with a big time receiver....Hartline should be a number 5 receiver at best.

This is a decent article with some insight on what has happened through 2 weeks. This isn't to justify anything, I found it an interesting read, albeit a small sample size of the season. The numbers will change and he will land back in the pack. I like that PFF goes deeper with analytics to show where RT stands. Have a peek and would love to hear opinions

:err: How dare anyone write anything positive about Tannehill. I can just imagine the attacks to this article that have already occurred, or about to occur.:nailbiter: LOL

I would say that he should be replaced with Rishard Matthews or Jarvis Landry right now, but they've had their drops, too.

I've said before, Tanny make about 2-3 throws per game that are just headscratchers. Then he makes another 4 or 5 per game that he's off by just enough to make a potential chunk play turn into a 12 yard catch cuz the receiver has to contort or slow down or whatever. But in the end, anything over 20 yards he seems to get nervous and be off. It's something he needs to fix and fix soon if he wants to be a ten or 15 year starter in this league rather than a guy you kinda like but wish he was better.

well my dad thinks the qb stinks to so you could add him to the list i guess...

Hey, my old man thinks he is 'going to be pretty good' and he was a season ticket holder from the inaugural season through the late 70s. The only two Dolphins QBs he's ever liked were Griese and Marino. He's usually pretty critical of these guys. :idk:

I told him some guys on the internet thought he was an idiot. :sidelol:

He was not bad against NE. He wasn't great but not bad. If he was bad, how did Brady look? Some well thrown balls weren't caught and others that weren't perfect should have been. Buffalo's D is good and he wasn't great. Others have to play better too. Cam Wake should abuse an UDFA tackle for example...

He was directly responsible for multiple turnovers.

So what in that article do you think is laughable? Honestly....what is disputable?

I think it clearly states that he hasn't played great. What it did was point out a few hurdles that may be making him look worse than his stats say. Don't see a problem with the article at all.
