PFF's OL Rankings After 5 Games

Didn't PFF rate as us about the same for our entire season last year. I could be wrong. I know they did not rate us as low as most of us would say we should have been

Not to nitpick, but why do you think Smith and Turner are misses? Smith was the starter at RG until he got hurt. Turner was expected to take some time, plus he has also been hurt. Compared to Ireland's butchery of the OL, this has been outstanding.

The biggest things that I see are that the players look like a fit for the system and their communication looks better than last season.
Both of those guys always seemed like projects. I'm not upset about getting them and have high hopes ... but for a line replacing all 5 starters, they were both very risky starters.

Smith has been what we expected--great run blocker but too inconsistent in pass protection. As a starter he is a miss ... not terrible, but not the answer either.

Turner is a guy who was a raw LT against low level competition but with great physical skills over matching his opponents. Huge step up in competition and lots of sloppy technique means it is a real gamble to expect him to start. He is not ready, which is why I called it a miss. Not as a prospect mind you, but as a solution to a huge OL problem.

I like Turner as a prospect. I'm hoping Smith can become a decent pass protector ... but for me, the jury is still out on him.

They were reporting on Sirius radio that Pouncey was practicing at guard this week and Satale staying at center.
Pat Kirwin said this would be a good move. Play the best 5 linemen.

This is correct. PFF is all over the place.

Last year's grades are in the rankings, and we were #21, in the OP.

I like the fact that they include penalties in their grades. I don't believe anyone else does, and they do make a difference on many a play and drive.

Also, last year they had us at #16 in pass block, and #30 in run block.

PFFis interesting but I never use it much for a point of reference

yea just as I thought. Couldn't remember last year's rating don't follow PFF that much. This year I would agree with the number through 4 games, last year we were much worse than the final number

where does 9 sacks 4 games in put us at rank wise...our running game success is as much scheme driven or better yet more scheme driven than personnel driven...but the biggest difference by far this year is the oline personnel fit the scheme...the tackles the guards the centers...

albert thru 4 games has been money well spent...if he gives me 12 good games and 4 ehh ones this year a 75 percent clip of plus play i'll take it...he played poorly vs kc but not as poorly as james...both tackles had rough games in that one

alberts getting to things in space that if he wasnt a plus athlete we wouldn't have a prayer on...those wide pitch plays to the left he's destroying guys in space

FWIW, last year they graded pass blocking at minus 8.3, and run blocking at minus 38.5. I cannot argue the rankings as I have not watched how good or bad the other 31 team's OL's were. I do re-watch the Dolphins OL, and believe they were/are right on what they saw. JMO

The 9 sacks put us in around #10-12 most, with the bye considered.

Agree on the fits, as you posted in preseason. I still question the success of the run, as it has been mostly vs 6 in the box. I need to see more vs 7 or 8 to be sold.

I think you are being too kind with Smith. He actually was pretty terrible. The Buffalo game he was absolutely terrible, beat on every single pass pro in the first half, many times beat clean at the snap, not getting a hand on someone right in front of him. When he got hurt Dallas came in and upgraded the position significantly. Smith is not now and never will be a starting player at this level. Maybe a good extra GL blocker or short yardage TE, but not a starting 5.

While that is true you probably won't get many chances to see what you are looking for. The running game is based on running against the looks we want to see and taking advantage of the defense. Against 8 man fronts we are usually going to pass. Having said that however I do love how we are so much better in short yardage this year. Last year we had to be worst in the league, and finally just gave up and started passing every time on 3rd and 1. If you can't move the chains in 3rd and 1/2 with your running game you won't win many games in the NFL.

This year we spread em out and aren't afraid to run on 3rd and short. Benton and Lazor and worked miracles in that area.

this offense isnt gonna allow for many 8 man fronts...too many spread looks and off the read option alone which is our bread and butter built in bubble screens on the perimeter etc where if they stack the box they can't account for our perimeter options...
