Guard Carl Nicks and wide receiver Marques Colston are both headed for free agency. Florio has explained previously Colston won’t take a hometown discount.
Nicks will be especially difficult to keep on a long-term deal because the Saints have already paid huge money for Jahri Evans and Nicks is viewed as one of the very best guards in football. Retaining Nicks on a one-year deal would be ideal, but it won’t be possible unless Brees’ contract is worked out quickly.
Nicks is “expected to leave” town, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
This gives Brees greater leverage in negotiations, but it also puts him in a tricky spot. The Saints can’t handle their other important free agent business and build the best team around Brees until they get his contract done.

Can we please add this guy to our OL, shift icognito to RG and our O-line would look like this: LT-Long, LG-Nicks, C-Pouncy, RG-Icognito, RT-Jerry/Gardner?

But knowing Ireland we will probably sign another dallas castoff
 
Get over that Cowboy stuff, we've signed free agents before that weren't from the Cowboys. Hope we land Nicks but I think the Saints can use their franchise tag on either players.
 
In all seriousness I think he'd be a good pickup and maybe we can sign a free agent OL who won't be a disaster this time.
 
I'd much rather get a solid mid money guy and use the money on a playmaker. We already have a high salary OL.
 
I agree MadDog, If its between a top OL or a playmaker I want a playmaker, but the right side of our OL is a mess and it needs to be addressed big time
 
The right side of the OL needs help and if you're willing to pay him there will be no better option in FA or the draft. It's highly unlikely any rookie will come in and play at Nicks level immediately. It just comes down to where you want to spend your money.
 
Colston is overrated and if you can sign a guy like Nicks then you do so. Our whole right side is a mess. He would instantly improve that. All we would need is a solid right tackle, from free agency as well, and we're settled.

Vernom Carey, Colombo should both be cut.

Playmakers? We have plenty of playmakers, we just don't have a quarterback. We're "set" as far as playmakers go. Don't think so highly of the playmakers the Saints have it's all on Brees' pinpoint accuracy.
 
Carl Nicks - YES PLEASE

He's Young and he is playing at a high level at a position of need. We have to supplement our draft picks with QUALITY free agent signings.

Not very many playmakers in FA that won't get franchised. Finley is getting franchised. Jackson is too. Nelson will be locked up by GB.
 
Brees will rework his contract but I don't know if they'll be able to keep both Nicks and Colston. I would love to have Nick though he would solve one guard spot and could possibly allow us to put John Jerry at RT. Jerry played a lot better than I expected at LT in place of Jake Long for that last game.
 
i have been yelling this out for weeks now, MAKE CARL NICKS THE #1, GET AT ALL COSTS F/A TARGET!!

this line is pathetic, and carl nicks will go along ways to fill a hole. if jake can become healthy, we find a REAL rt tackle, line them up with pouncy and you will ALL be changing you tune on matt moore. ben grubbs should be the fall back. heck, sign both and we are on our way to an all universe o-line!!

its so funny because all this time with the the qb's we have had from fiedler to henne folks were belly aching about "its the o-line! get an o-line and they will be good players"....... but the fact was, we had good lines, the qb's were puke.

now, the o-line is truely BAD and we have the qb but everyone says we gotta get rid of moore at all costs!!

but yeah, carl nicks should be the first and foremost free agent target this off season.
