PFT Springs a Leak in Saban's Ship? Vickerson Rumor Quickly Covered Up...

Good investigative work CK...I think PFT tends to be somewhat unreliable compared to a lot of publications and NFL site info I have read...they have too much specualtion and rumor and not enough validation.

Yeah, but I don't think PFT is to be compared to those other publications. There is a difference between NEWS and RUMOR. PFT tries to publish stuff before it becomes actual news, based on rumors and whispers they hear from their network of sources. The good news is they get it right a LOT of the time, to the point where it is staggering sometimes. The bad news is that merely by trying to report whispers before they become fact, and by relying so heavily on a network of questionable sources, they leave themselves open to a lot of false reports.

Having followed then for more than five years, I can honestly say that when they hear something from a source that is inside info, not just the dude's opinion, they are right more than they are wrong.

I guess some people will believe what they want to believe about PFT. I know I've followed them probably for about 5 to 7 years now. They have sources.

They haven't been around for 5-7 years.

Florio worked for ESPN up until 2000 or 2001 or so.

Bottom line is Florio nailed the Randy Muller thing before anyone else had it. He has hit some other Fins stories on the head as well. Nobody is right 100% of the time. Florio is no better or worse than anyone for CNNSI, FOX, or ESPN.

Oh contrare.

Prior to working for ESPN, Mr. Florio was editor of not Pro Football Talk, but rather NFL Talk. They began a rumor mill, almost IDENTICAL to the one they run right now, a loooooong time ago. I've followed it since high school (which was 7 years ago for me). They then got bought out by ESPN and sadly became a pay-only site. My heart was broken.

Then some time ago, they unexpectedly resurfaced as Pro Football Talk. They probably lost the rights to the name NFL Talk.

PFT is about as accurate as Fat Hank and Mort...which is maybe 50% of the time.

I will back this up. I used to read NFL talk as well.

Very interesting, I always thought that pft doesnt really get the respect that it deserves on this board. They nail a lot of stuff and are completely wrong on others. But then again it is a "rumor" site not a "news" site.

my point, NFL Talk was bought by ESPN. And it became ESPN Insider. Florio ran it for ESPN Insider then left. He then opened his own website, PRO FOOTBALL TALK.

You said you followed PFT for 7 years, I said they haven't been around for 7 years. WHich they haven't. If you said you followed Florio for 7 years, well then thats a different story.

So that makes PFT credible.

Game, set, match!

Dude talk about splitting hairs. If you had actually read NFL Talk back in the day, and see PFT now, you would realize that basically the only thing that has changed is the word "NFL"

Heck, until a few weeks ago even the color scheme stayed the same.

I DID READ NFLTalk BACK IN THE DAY. I am not arguing with you. I know what you are saying.

You said you followed PFT for 7 years. I pointed it it hasn't been around for 7 years. I understand you have followed NFLTalk, ESPNInsider, and now PFT for 7 years. I just didn't want people to think PFT has been around 7 years cause it hasn't. IT has in some way, under other ownership which had restrictions on Florio and what-not. The reason it is what it is now is because those restrictions are gone.

Relax, nobody is being combative with you :shakeno:

Hey CK -

As another reader of PFT going back to the NFLTalk days, have you considered simply emailing Florio and asking him about it? He's usually pretty responsive.

(I'd do it, but this is your baby, and I don't see the point of bombarding them over this).

Already done dude. I emailed him before I posted the thread.

He and I have corresponded a few times. He's used some of my stuff before for the page.

he won't give up a source plus he has had a bunch of problems with other Fin Fan Sites I won't name. Threatening them with lawsuits for using his material without giving him credit.

I interviewed him a year or two back.

He won't give up his source, but all I asked was if the team got to him, and why did he retract the story. If it was because his source wanted him to retract the story, then I don't see why he wouldn't say "I had to, my source asked me to retract it"
