Philbin and Ireland were "not entirely convinced" he would beat out Moore (Flynn)

Everyone knows Ireland is a fool- of that there can be no doubt, but I'm not going to let that override my common sense on the matter. Overpaying for a backup qb who has two good games on his resume is just plain stupid. It's like all of you jaded posters who can't see through your hate of Ireland have forgotten all about A.J. Feeley and Kevin Kolb. We swung on Manning and missed. Now let's just wait and pick up a guy in the draft instead of overpaying for a guy who's former OC obviously has doubts about him. Making moves out of desperation is never smart.

Well we will never know whose decison it was. I do feel if Philbin thought Flynn wasnt all that why would they bring him in, no need to kick the tires since he worked with him everyday. he also had to know that Flynn was not coming here for less money than Richard friggin Marshall
One reason could be they did it as a courtesy to Flynn. If word got out that Philbin didn't want to see him, Seattle wouldn't give him $8 million per season.
The other reason is that they simply needed another QB. If the plan is to get Tannehill, which is looking more likely every day, you want a veteran presence and David Garrard ended up filling that role.

If you draft a starting QB next Month then we will know why we passed on Flynn. Past history with Ireland does not say it will happen. However if we do draft a QB in first 3 rounds it will be due to Sherman and Ireland being here.

You keep beating this same drum. Like I said Philbin is the only coach that knew Matt Flynn and as a FA QB you bring him in to meet the offensive coaches and discuss with him their plans on offense and how he may fit in, either to compete for the starting job or as a backup.

So you are saying they just brought him in for nothing since there is no way he coming here to play for 5 mill a year and compete with Moore . We all knew this but somehow this point escaped these professionals unlikley

"[Ross] goes, 'If my coach wanted Matt Flynn didn't you think he would be here?'" Lawrence said. "'If my coach said I want Matt Flynn as our starting quarterback next year he would be here, but I couldn't pay Matt Flynn $8 million to come here. If I end up getting him, it's a gamble … and I'm still drafting a quarterback. I'm still looking for another option."

Alex Smith was a gamble and we were quite sold on him.I believe nothing Ross ever says, he lied enough about his Harbaugh adventure

Ross said 49ers quarterback Alex Smith wanted to play in Miami, but he could not justify paying $8 million annually when Matt Moore - already on the roster with comparable production – could be the starter.

BTW - That fits with Dan LeBatard's information, that Alex Smith never received a contract offer from Miami.... so I don't understand where you're coming up with the information that Miami was "quite sold on him".

I believe nothing Ross ever says, he lied enough about his Harbaugh adventure

So now your theory is the owner is publicly LYING about what his brand new coach thinks of a player? Talk about being married to your opinion. lol
