Philbin & Co: hell bend in beating the Patriots Was the botched FG a fake?

yep we have 3 guys running routes (1 delayed on the right side of the line) and Sturgis ran like it was a fake.

It was Derrick Shelby and Dallas Thomas on the left side and Trusnik on the right

yeah, unblocked. the guy egnew (or whoever that was) slipped by

yeah he's releasing so he's gonna let him go but man i wonder if fields would have time to catch stand up and fire the football...especially if he has to decide which side to go to with both sides releasing...

i like the stones of it though...but now we can't use it cause someone has called it out...

and i definitely don't like those pass receiving options...wouldn't there be an illegal man down field with thomas and shelby on that play??? i guess i need to see it...

I think that Fields was going to pitch the ball to Sturgis (Sturgis initially ran right behind Fields) who was going to throw it. I could be way wrong. Shelby is lined up a step off the line, so Thomas is the TE on that side.

if it was supposed to be Fields who was gonna pass, no chance to get the play of. after re watching the higher quality video, it was Shelby who released to the left, but he was covered. the other guy (Egnew, Trusnik, whoever, i think it was #93) was open, but Fields wouldn't have had the time to find him IMO.

you talking about that over the shoulder stuff where the kicker runs behind the holder??? omg and sturgis gonna throw it...the balls bigger than he is

OK - if Matthews is running upfield and it looks like he's scooting, who would be passing the ball to him? Fields or Sturgis? Are either any good at throwing the ball a decent distance?
Has anyone seen either throwing the ball in practice? If this was the plan, why wouldn't we have someone like Matt Moore as an occasional ball holder. He mightn't be as good as Fields at catching but he should be able to do it OK and his passing would be way superior.

I think Sturgis was supposed to throw the ball. If you watch the play, his first step when the ball is snapped is towards Fields.

I could be wrong, but Sturgis's first step is towards Fields, and there is no way Fields would've gotten the throw off. Our coaches would have to know that.

like a peanuts episode if sturgis was gonna throw it...charlie brown ball bigger than he is ha ha

yeah, could be. based on Sturgis' initial step, it looked like he would try to go around behind Fields.

You're right. I saw the long hair and thought it was Ellerbe...it looks as though Thomas must have been getting out in front to block.

Shades of Garo Yepremian come to mind.

yeah yepremian and didn't he like fall down and all over the ball and they make a folly out of it...sturgis good lord his head has a hard time holding up his helmet...he's like a new born

I do agree. It was Sturgis with either a pass or run to the left.

He tried to throw it and it slipped out of his hands. Instead of going up 17-0 on the Redskins in the super bowl that blunder led to a Redskins TD and made it 14-7 which was the final score. I've heard Shula talk about that and he was furious.
