Philbin Supporters: Make Your Case

Well, his background is in offensive lines..so..yea.

just fyi, if you were a guy on TV talking about HC jobs, you would be dismantled for that notion. A HC job is not about bringing your past talents to the table. That is all the coaches and the GM's responsibility as a whole. The HC just gets the blame. Philbin has accepted that blame.

The blessing in disguise to me in this whole thing is that its obvious where the holes are.

We know what needs fixing. If it doesnt get done when so obvious, then there is no more debate.

But hey, if the owner wants to bag it in, so be it! Start all over! Makes complete sense.

The problem is that they keep creating more holes. WR was a huge, glaring hole last season. They addressed it. And created more holes at RB, LB, and OT.

The first part of this year, I was impressed with the game plans and particularly the half-time adjustments. However, that changed very rapidly after the first three or four games.

Because after a few games, there's more tape on us, and a pattern, and opposing teams get a close look and make adjustments and beat us.

The test was now, it was December football. If we don't have our act together when it matters, then the coaches have failed.

Philbin's "magic wand" (his philosophy and system) ruined the strengths of this team. He (and Coyle) took a Top 5 run defense and changed schemes, turning it into a 13th (?) ranked run defense. In their second year, with the help of Ireland's LB swap, they turned it into a Bottom 5 run defense. Miami had a decent (not great) running game which kept drives alive via Polite's automatic 1st downs. An OL and RB upgrade would have made it a very good running game. But, Philbin's system uses short passes rather than the run, and after installing his system (and getting rid of the FB position) they now can't even convert on 3rd and inches. An o-line that was "not terrible" but needed upgrading turned into a terrible o-line with mostly the same personnel and the change to Philbin's system.

I stopped reading this thread. Got pissed. Rushed to the end and posted this.
I generally liked Philbin. Then I wanted to see adjustments, adjustments at halftime of games. I wanted to see our gameplans week to week and a head coach get his attitude up to kick the team in to another gear for the final two crucial games. I would literally let him go solely for the final two games. WHAT THE INEXCUSABLE HELL !?!
The type of player Ireland likes is lame. His DNA is all over the team and his report card is a big fat C minus. Not good enough. Coach and GM. Out.

One comment from the broadcasters struck me during the Jets telecast. The Jets were called for illegal procedure and the announcers mentioned that the Jets lead the league in pre-snap penalties. I can barely recall ANY Dolphins' pre-snap penalties this year. And I believe the Dolphins have committed the least amount of penalties over the last two years. Gone are the Sparano days when timeouts were habitually squandered because they couldn't get the play off in time. Philbin's team is disciplined and prepared -- the real question is how much talent has he had to work with.

Bottom line is that I agree with Roy_Miami that Philbin is an excellent game day coach. He made adjustments in pass protection from the Bills game to the Jets game. He made a critical challenge regarding the spot on the throw to Thigpen whose reversal gave the Dolphins a critical 1st down. To me, this is what I want the head coach focused on during the game. Others seem to be bothered that Philbin is a delegator and gives complete control to his coordinators. That doesn't bother me provided that he holds Coyle and Sherman accountable and makes the necessary changes. Sherman to me is the most necessary coaching change and I hope Philbin exerts his authority in making this needed change.

The biggest problem with the Dolphins is that they have become soft. It's painful to watch a team that can't block or tackle. It's painful to watch a team that fails repeatedly to convert short yardage situations. Now if this is due to a deliberate choice or scheme by Philbin then I would be concerned. Without knowing, I am assuming that it is Ireland that is drafting soft, finesse players. The prototypical example is drafting Jonathan Martin instead of Alshon Jeffrey, a physical receiver who catches the ball with his hands. Those are the type of players you win with. With the exception of Grimes, Ireland brought in a bunch of soft free agents with Wallace, Wheeler, Keller and Ellerbee.

So under the assumption that Philbin has been given soft, finesse type players to work with then changes at the coordinator and GM roles are much more critical than replacing Philbin.

Lastly, I don't understand the criticism of the way Philbin handles his press conferences. I wouldn't respect a coach that airs out his dirty laundry in public. Most good coaches are evasive in such situations. It doesn't mean that he is clueless; it means that he is professional.

What you're describing is the responsibility of Philbin. It's Philbin's job to coach, gameplan, choose when they practice, how they practice, what they focus on (stripping instead of tackling). It is Philbin who decides who plays and who gets benched or cut. It's Philbin who rejected Ireland's players (Bush, Dansby, Fasano, Polite, etc) and wanted finesse players. The GM is giving the coach what he asked for.

They share the responsibility and both deserve blame. Neither is without fault for the shortcomings of this team.

They both deserve blame, I agree. I wouldn't have a problem firing all of them. I'm just pointing out that the things mentioned had nothing to do with Ireland. And the fact that we could have made the playoffs but blew the last two games really concerns me, in terms of coaching and scheme.

I don't blame Philbin for cleaning out the members of the leadership council if they weren't the type of players he wanted. I have no problem if Philbin thought Brandon Marshall would be a locker room cancer who would hinder the development of Ryan Tannehill. The issue is with whom Ireland replaced them. Philbin didn't tell Ireland to overpay for Ellerbee and Wheeler. Philbin didn't tell Ireland to use the picks acquired from trading Marshall to draft Michael Egnew and Daniel Thomas, trading up no less. I have no knowledge how much input Philbin had in determining which new players to bring in, but I place the majority of the blame on Ireland. Perhaps he should've offered Jake Long more money to stay instead of giving Mike Wallace such a ridiculous contract. And if Ireland drafted Alshon Jeffrey instead of Jonathan Martin then he wouldn't have needed to waste all that money on Mike Wallace. Did the Steelers miss Mike Wallace? No. Antonio Brown and Emmanuel Sanders are better all-around players than Mike Wallace, and I'm sure the Steelers knew that.
