Philbin's Failure

Philbin is a high school teacher masquerading as a professional football coach. If you want some insight into his mentality, look no further than this article from when he was hired:

Later on Monday, Philbin and his fellow offensive coaches would split up game plan responsibilities — third down, red zone, blitz, short yardage, goal line, etc. – and collaborate on Tuesday morning to put it all together in a PowerPoint presentation. Later on Tuesday, Philbin would present that week’s game plan to McCarthy, and then to the players in a meeting on Wednesday morning.

Everything about that presentation had to be perfect.

“If any PowerPoint slide had a spelling or grammar mistake, any typo, any scheme error, that was my responsibility, just like a teacher,” Philbin said.

---

He is more concerned with PowerPoint presentations and gum wrappers than actual on-field strategy and leadership. He is an administrator, not a leader of men.

It's about time people come to realize we are just spinning our wheels with this guy as head coach.

Its called being professional in a business setting. I don't see anything wrong at all with what he said.

I don't fault Philbin for his call honestly. We were playing with complete garbage up until that point and the line couldn't block anyone. We would have gotten sacked and gone 3 and out. Then they would have targeted either Will Davis or Jason Trusnick, moved the ball into our territory with ease and then kicked the field goal or touchdown.

I think your confidence that the Miami offense would have botched the situation and the defense would have given up more points says more about Philbin than anything else. Obviously, if his team is that incompetent, then he is not a good head coach. So why is he still here in his third season??

I didn't say anything about Philbin. He isn't the one missing a wide open Brandon Gibson, throwing behind Rishard Matthews in the endzone, underthrowing Mike Wallace on a post route or missing Lamar Miller in the flats. We left 3 TDs on the field.

I don't think he is a particularly good coach, but I think he is putting his players in right positions during games, they just cant execute. That isn't to say he doesn't have some massive flaws.

...at time I was watching the game...I wasn't really that upset with the way Miami ran out the first half...the Dolphins were playing like crap...Buffalo was all fired up and playing pretty good...I thought to myself ok we're only down 9...we could have easily been down 17/21 points...let's just end this nightmare of a 1st half...besides we get the ball to start the 3rd...but the more I thought about it...the madder I got...with 2:21 and 3 T/O's that's just too much time to kill...especially on the road...sometimes I think you just need to let your players know you have their backs...even if you think it's a bad idea(as HC)... or the odds are against you...maybe not in this game...but somewhere down the line(later in the season)...it will reward you for showing them you "had their backs"...so I think Philbin took a huge step backwards with his team on Sunday.

I think you are missing the point about that article. It's not that being a stickler for PowerPoint presentations is a problem, its that the one thing they could find to hype up Philbin was his "attention to detail" when it came to putting together PowerPoint decks. That would be GREAT for a marketing employee, but I think a HC candidate should have a bit more to hang his hat on. Philbin is obsessed with minutiae, but not in the good X&Os way like BB. He obsesses on inconsequential things like untied shoelaces and gum wrappers on the floor, while ignoring things like team chemistry, gameday situations and motivating the team.

I am certain he performed some kind of bloated intellectual exercise to convince himself that burning 3 minutes to end the half was a sound decision, when in actuality it was an epic wasted opportunity and a dagger to his relationship with his players. You think players appreciate that their coach essentially quit on them, and forced THEM to lay down in a crucial situation like that? These men have pride, and Philbin essentially emasculated them with that wuss call.

This is bull. You destroy a team's confidence more by showing them that you flat-out have zero confidence in their ability to not F things up.

Philbin's showed every member of the offense that he didn't respect their abilities, their preparation, or their mental toughness. He also showed Lazor that he didn't trust him to call plays that wouldn't lead to disaster.

What in the first deserved the response you seek?

Playing scared. Kind of like the last 2 weeks last year. Need some Dudes with some balls, fire, and leadership. Don't feel that from our QB, or Head Coach. Starting to feel better about Lazor and maybe give Moore one more shot. Dude has some fire. Tannehill the last 4 games looks very Chad Henne like for reals

Playing scared is right. Notice how after the pitbull of our team, Knowshon, wnet down, everyone else freaked out.

Part of a coach's job is to be in tune with the psyche/mood of this team. It was obvious that the offense was shell shocked by the Bills defense and their energy level. RT was obviously rattled and was playing poorly.
They were down only 9 points.
The team needed to be settled down and adjustments had to be made. There was very little statistical chance that the offense could move the ball and score points before halftime. If RT throws an int while under duress or takes a sack/fumble and allows the Bills to get anothner another cheap score before halftime the morale of the team (and effectively the game) is lost.
Philbin knew they would get the ball 1st. He had to settle the team down, get them focused and make adjustments.
He was proven correct with the 1st drive to open the 2nd half. Unfortunately, his QB failed to make an accurate throw on back to back plays inside the red zone and they had to settle for a FG.
With adequate QB play the score should have been 16-14 heading into the 4th quarter with all the momentum on the side of the Phins.
Unfortunately, the defense allowed a long drive with very little resistance on the ensuing drive and the game was essentially over. The team also could not overcome all the special team gaffes.

RT being rattled is not what we want from our 3rd year qb. He went through it last year in Buffalo. So he can't take that game last year and build on it, grow from it, be stronger from it?
Then he shouldn't be playing here.

Those men were emasculated by the Buffalo Bills.
