Philbin's first decision tells the story

The best thing about Joe getting canned is I will never have to read posters blaming anything that goes wrong on anyone OTHER than Joe.

For three years, people have blamed Jeff Ireland, Steve Ross, Mike Sherman, Kevin Coyle, Bill Lazor, Ryan Tannehill, HBO, the media or whoever…but it was never Joe's fault.

He called out RT today, it is time that someone on this team calls HIM out to coach better.

jus for the record, I was first up to say joe was next in line once jiffy got the can...its too predictable around here.

Yes that is what I'm saying. Letting Sherman pick your QB is suicide, so you better be really sure. No way you can be sure on RT so don't do it. Just like the correct decision with the 1st or 2nd pick is too try for a QB while you have the draft spot. You have to try. Philbin is not a good leader. He showed this right out of the gate.

How is this not a catch-22?

Amen! The list of excuses some people have for Philbin is truly incredible... And then when you ask them to point even one thing that Philbin does well as a HC, they refuse to answer the question. Instead, they deflect and make dumb statements like "If only he had a QB he would be a playoff-winning coach".

As much as I wanted him to be the guy I have seen enough to know Joe ain't the guy. Is the adage true.?..."the team takes on the personality of it coach." Well yes ...question do they blow it all up. Or does Hickey stay? It does seem like he fond some players but it is early.

The only reason RT17 was chosen at #7 (?) was because there was a sense of despiration hovering over this team. WE all knew we needed a QB, because Henne wasn't the guy.
Having Shermin influence Philbin (I believe Ireland, Ross mandated at QB with the 1st pick) (Ireland probably went along only to defer blame later) was a big part of the decision.
Since Shermin had familiarity with RT, it seemed like a logical fit. Philbin did defer to his former mentor. Philbin probably figured that he could blame Shermin and start over if RT didn't work out. everyone was out to point the finger in self preservation. Not a way to build the team.
So, in the end we basically ended up with the 2nd rate selection of a washed up college coach who had no business "go/going" in the NFL. We were a laughing stock, and some are still laughing.
I do not fault RT. He tried his best in college and after he was selected. He has lived a charmed life thus far. The NFL is a business, and he is not a playoff QB.
Philbin was not assertive, he had little knowledge so he deferred to others he trusted, and now when everything is coming apart he is acting indecisive. It is his way of handling things.
Stick your head into the ground and come up later. Take a long nap and maybe the storm clouds will pass.
That is not the type of man that coaches football.
We need a guy that played the game, rose from a player to coach and impressed his peers doing so. And finally lead several teams and staffs while winning games. That build self confidence and respect.
Philbin has none of those characteristics. He is a nice guy that helped out at Green Bay. He was basically a beneficiary of Arron Rodgers and GB's success.
Our evaluators were completely wrong and they were looking for the wrong man for the job. Their criteria was a nice well spoken "yes' man that could interview well and seem likable. Perfect bedfellows for Ireland and Aponte, who didn't need an aggressive coach to mess up their power grab.
The long story short..Ross is a moron.

BTW...I wanted Kuechy and Cousins in that draft....

Before the 2012 draft, there were a lot of reports saying that owner Stephen Ross was the one pushing hardest for Ryan Tannehill..

Report: Ryan Tannehill coveted by Dolphins' Stephen Ross

http://www.nfl.com/draft/story/0900...an-tannehill-coveted-by-dolphins-stephen-ross

I call BS on this. Stephen Ross doesn't tell the GM and Head Coach who should be drafted to play QB.

There is a whole lot of blame to go around...but the fact that 3 games into the season and everyone is ready to jump ship reflects very poorly on where this organization is. If potentially being where a lot of people thought we would be before the bye (2-2) is a reason to lose faith in the team, then there are more serious issues that go beyond Tannehill and Philbin. From the looks of it, after over 2 years of watching the same game, it doesn't look like Joe and Ryan are the guys to take us to the promised land once again here in Miami (which I highly doubt anyone truly believed they would be the ones).

Joe Philbin not looking Chad Johnson in his eyes during their chat in his office on Hard Knocks.

The lack of leadership shown in that scene was jaw dropping. Many commented on that very thing so it wasn't an overreaction or misreading the interaction on my part. Not being able to look someone in their eyes when carrying a conversation diminishes power and respect, and its very obvious for everyone involved.

Scary thing, and I just realized this tonight, is that Stephen Ross missed that during the interview process. He couldn't evaluate if Philbin could be a leader. Someone to lead from the front. A confident man who can inspire confidence in others. When it was so obvious and on display for everyone watching Hard Knocks...did Ross never pick up on his lack of confidence during their time together? I believe he had to have seen some red flags during the vetting process. Maybe Ross has hired yes men as that's suits his day job and yes man Philbin felt right. Either way I'm not inspired.

Can we trust Ross to hire a good coach?

Philbin has no problem looking a little man like Ross in the eyes. when he has to confront a head strong player like Chad Johnson, or a 300 lb man that could crush him between their fingers, that makes him wilt and he lowers his head in fear. He has no standing to speak to a player about how to play the game. If they need advice on how to trim hedges or spray for bugs, maybe he can help.

I heard story back in the 70s Don Shula would fight players straight up. Shula was a straight up bad azz mofo.

Shula was a player, and a great coach. He also would not allow anyone to undermine his authority.
Once you have been undermined, you are done.
Philbin lost this team the day he was introduced. I am sure the players were saying ...WTF?...
I hate to see this team and staff get blown up and get a new staff, but this one is not going to take us to the playoffs.
I would keep Lazor, Rogers, and Benton. Those guys are legit.

I'm sorry but Philbin to me is the main culprite of our bad game planning. What is Coyle been doing on Defense? 8 yard cushions on Watkins so EJ only had to make easy throws?? Same crap this week. At least change the depth of the off man with our corners, keep the QB guessing. On offense, Ryan hasn't played great. Some how they have to get him to stop being so methodical and play more free. Not be afraid of a pick instead let him go for it. Just weird to see Ryan go backwards this year.

You can't be sure about any qb in the draft. What a ridiculous post. He took a risk and it didn't pan out. A good leader is not afraid to take risks if he believes it's the right move. Unfortunately, it was the wrong move. But to say he made the wrong decision because you can't be sure about Tannehill? That's ridiculous.
In the situation where you are letting Sherman basically make the call and be the scout, it is, at least to me. Not necessarily from a football POV but from a leadership POV. My point is more about business and his decisions illuminating him not being ready to be a HC.

Will you stop bumping this ridiculous thread. The situation you're describing is a pitch perfect catch-22.

He needs a QB but can't utilize his good friend Mike Sherman to get an opinion on Tannehill? He'd be weak to even ask the guy that drafted Aaron Rodgers his opinion on the QB he just coached for years? That was supposed to be a pretty huge advantage for us over other teams. So according to you Tannehill should have been taken off our draft board else it looks weak.

On the flip side if we didn't take him and Tannehill turned out to be the best QB in the draft you'd be calling Philbin an idiot for not listening to the guy that drafted Aaron Rodgers and recruited Johnny Manziel...
