Philbin's seat just got hotter

The number one problem with this team is not this draft but why we ended up with Hickey as the default GM. Hickey could be a sleeper who knows as well as many of his draft picks today. Actually outside of the trade back for James that Hickey did not make I feel a tad better about this draft coming out than I did going into it. On the other hand we have not had a home run GM here for over at least 20 plus years. JJ had the most fun draft trading back and acquiring draft picks but whiffing in the first round and Ireland probably the most solid drafts hitting in the first round and delivering in the later rounds and FA. Philbin is not going to cut it IMO after he lost the team those last 2 games last season. Unlike Shula whom built his team around his talent Philbin seems bent on building the team in his image. That being said the garbage dump that smells in Phinsland goes much deeper than these 2 guys on why no GM would choose to work here and IMO Ross or Aponte is the issue. Hey we have great weather, no income taxes and a owner who appears willing to spend the money plus have a pretty good NFL market we just need some leadership.

Irrational exhuberance aside, as nobody knows how any of these players might pan out....the broad reactions that are unveiling about all these picks is that there may not be a single starter among them. Even if James starts, its more a testament to the poor and desperate condition of the fins OL talent level than James own draft stock being termed by many NFL analysts as a reach chosen due to NEED. Period.

Not a single player will move the needle on an 8-8 team that has had 5 years straight of losing seasons, and hasnt sniffed the playoffs in longer.

Not a single player will impact any AFC East rivals. Buffalo did the most damage by making a bold move to get the best player in the draft by most accounts.

Their isn't a single player across all rounds that Hickey is bringing in that will make any difference to Patriots on opening day, not one.

This team bares very little chance of contending for the AFC East much less being able to match up against Buffalo, NE, and even the Jets.

Where's the talent Hickey?
Let's see what we've got before you start slitting your wrists. Check out the Jarvis Landry video - he could be a big contributor.
The biggest problem we had last year was O-line and 2 of the first 3 picks were selected with that in mind.
I respect your opinion but the drafted players haven't even assembled and you're giving up. Please be patient. Let's actually see what we've got.

What would I have done? I would have noticed the games we gave up that caused us to be 8-8 and peter out at the end of the year. I would have taken the trade down and gotten James or same talent RT later.
I would have taken Clyde as my power runner. I would have taken a TE in the 3rd. then WR, ILB, G/C, CB in that order based on BPA with all the talent that was there.

Clyde who? Clyde S Dale? 1 of the the horses pulling the Bud wagon?

Turner and James MUST get stronger. They did fewer reps of 225 then TE Arthur Lynch

Bench press has nothing to do with football strength. Can you move a 300 pound player 3 feet back for 3.5 seconds every play then have a minute rest in between? Ok thats football strength. Please tell me when they are ever going to need to put 225 pounds up 20+ times without rest on the football field?

Yeah, that Clyde guy is some kinda RB... And the squealers fan agrees...

Let's not be so cautionary my Aussie bud.

Put up your offensive chart and who scares you? nobody. Until and if Tanny can ever hit Wallace deep down the sideline, nothing will change simply because defenses are able to match up.

The OL is vastly different but unproven still at LG, RG, RT. The RB position is marginally improved with Moreno who has shown he puts the ball on the ground too often and still is not the downhill runner fins lack. Yes he brings more dependability in pass protection and can be a 3 down back but again not a game breaker or take-it-to-the-house speed. No other TE weapon to accompany Clay. Wallace is handled with physical CB play and is ineffective going across the middle, a pure clear-out receiver with a single trick to display. Hartline is a possession receiver and teams have chosen to keying on him as Wallace is not a threat except in Y routes. This leaves Clay as the only match up concern for opposing D's but thats still not enough.

Add to this Tanny's lack of long ball accuracy and no other proven experienced deep threat on the roster teams will have little trouble game planning against this offense, regardless of scheme.

On D, Hickey whiffed on any ILB's that can come in day one and at least challenge as the thumper in the middle. Sprinkle in a journeyman CB in Finny, who couples with another small CB opposite him and we will cause opposing offenses with 6'2and taller WR's and big-body WR's.

So, aside from plugging a hole at RT with a "reach" pick who many had graded in later rounds, and the lack of any balls moves to get a game changer on this talent starved roster, I cant see this team doing anything much different than .500 or so +/- a game here or there.

Contrast this with the turnarounds with the Colts, Seahawks, 49ers, and others where new HC's have made an immediate improvement in the talent of the roster and gotten their teams into the playoffs, I cant see Philbin being the guy who gets another year beyond next.

The crazy thing is there are always 1 or 2 likes to threads like this almost always. Buffalo made a shrewd move? They had a Top 10 pick so they had more of an opportunity to do "something".

You are pretty spot on. As an outside observer (Steelers fan) I am left shaking my head at this draft. You don't have a franchise QB and you passed on Manziel. The draft is deepest at WR yet you draft a shorter slower WR than either of your starters. Each pick needed to be home runs and all I saw were bunt singles. Sadly, the way Ross does things ass backwards, it will hard to get a good coach who is willing to go there next year. It's a sad franchise and nothing suggests it will turnaround anytime soon. Not until Ross sells which is probably not going to happen for a very long time. Miami will finish with 6 or 7 wins at best and be back in the top ten next year. Sucks for them there isn't a Manziel next year. Wow they blew that opportunity.

You're saying that Manziel is a franchise QB???? I guess all the teams ahead of us and even Cleveland blew their first shots at him.

If my team is being coached by Joe Philbin, I want that team to feature Joe Philbin players. Ross has invested in Philbin; it's time to see if it's worth it. I'm glad Hickey drafted to Philbin's preferences, because now there's zero excuses if Philbin fails, and we can move on cleanly.

Also, this draft is at absolute worst, a B-

We got the possibly best ZBS RT in the draft
an absolute steal in Landry
a versatile lineman prospect in Turner where he should have gone
an instinctual ILB in Tripp who I think might be more athletic than CJ Moseley
a CB/Safety in Aikens with good measurables
a run-blocking TE to compete with Sims, with good hands and tough on blocks
a very productive WR in Hazel
a big DT/DE prospect in Fede to compete for depth

These are all areas the Fins needed improvement on, depth, versatility, offensive targets with good hands, and team captains with high character.

We lost 2-3 games due to our offensive line problems alone so that should have been the priority coming into the off season. Not WR or LB or any other position. Our LB as bad as they were are good enough to win games as well as our entire defense. What was NOT good enough was our offense mostly because of our offensive line. Fix that and a lot of the other problems go away.

Hickey stepped into irelands mess. He is doing it his way. Let's give him 2 years

I agree 100% with OP and have been thinking the same thing. Sad thing is all of us have but won't admit it. Well those who know anything about football. This draft was WEAK for us and full of question marks. Nobody we drafted can any of us say will be a day 1 starter and play WELL at his position. Yes James may start but only because how horrible our line is.

I see landry making tough plays in the slot. i see an improved running game and and improved pass protection.
Going in we all knew giving up sacks was the biggest weakness on the team. And at least Hicky tried to address that.

Agreed.
