Philip Merling on the Trade Block

hey magoo...you brought up jordan cameron...he never struck me as the real in line blocking type te during the draft eval period i know ben watsons not that guy and evan moore either...have you heard any scuttlebutt on cameron in camp??? he just seemed a lot of finesse to me

i would be pretty nervous asking jordan cameron to try and block big guys in line i know that...i think he'd get run over...need an awful lot of help

Oh yea people stop throwing out Will Allen name out there for a trade.....he has no value, anyone who wants allen only has to wait for him to get cut.......his knees are shot......

Clay is an H-back/Fullback type player... it's basically a hybrid position on offense in the same vein the "star" or "rover" is a hybrid position on defense.

Clay doesn't have the skillset, nor is he developed enough in the blocking department to play in-line on the LOS as a true tight end.... he has to play off-set from the LOS in an H-back role to be effective.

An H-back basically serves as an outlet receiver more than a true tight end. It's all about how you function from the line of scrimmage and go from there.

Clay has looked OK blocking so far. I would take him over Polite right now. Polite's blocking last year was unacceptable for a FB.

polite doesn't fit this offense but sparano has already said he's safe...i still think he's gone though...he looks like a fish out of water with what we're trying to do

Tony Scheffler anyone? Lions already have Pettigrew.

i haven't seen bennett ever threaten a seam or be able to split out and make a play against a cb or safety anywhere near like i have jermichael finley...but i admit that i flat out love finleys game...that kids rediculous

awfully poor mans finley if that if you ask me...anyways...you might be right about will allen...but whats bennetts value too...i think its severely impacted cause teams know he's such a pain in the ***...bad attitude bad work ethic just not what you want really in the lockerroom...i know i wouldn't trade anything more than a 5th for bennett right now...i'll take my chances elsewhere with anything higher than that...could i get a 5th like value for will allen from a team like dallas who's desperate at cb and in must win now mode...i think its possible...not outright impossible i'd say...but if he doesn't suit up and play and look right saturday its all a moot point...no one will even take the chance

i'm with you on merling...if there's any value there its late...very late...personally i don't think you get more than a 7th return for him

I love Finley, too. Here's a "highlight" of Martellus Bennett, btw. It's poorly edited but take a look at the play at 1:25 (the first play is also a pretty good play against the seam, though it's probably a better throw than anything. Check the view of the play starting 25 seconds in).

You're right about Bennett being a bad locker room guy. But if he was a hard worker and a good locker room guy, he probably isn't available. That's the way it is. But John Phillips is the new #2 in Dallas more than likely and they're probably going to have to move Bennett one way or another, which drops his value. He's probably not worth on the open market what Nolan Carroll is worth. I'm also sort of curious about his contract situation. There's a good chance he's a FA after this season, which also would lower his value.

He's a risk, and I sure wouldn't want to coach him, but the guy has big time ability.

I haven't paid too much attention to Browns camp, actually, so I don't know what they've been saying. I just know that going off his college tape that he can't block anyone. He's the very definition of a big WR playing TE. Sort of an Ernest Wilford with better speed.

bingo

jared odrick a bust? wtf? this dude will likely start for near 10 seasons and make pro bowls along the way.

giants just lost starting cb terrell thomas for the year with a torn acl...they may be in the market for a cb...may want will allen back in trade...just throwin it out there...god knows i don't want any of their te's they have right now...pascoe would make a solid #3 blocking te but he's not something i'd ever trade anything for

they do have some RB's though. maybe Will Allen for Da'Rel Scott

Asante Samuel is available maybe the dolphins can put merling in a package
