Phillip Rivers looked great tonight

Don't you just love the pre-season? Everyone becomes a scout. Evaluating players against second and third string offenses and defenses. Don't get me wrong I would love to have Phillip Rivers. But you have to take a pre-season performance with a grain of salt. The third pre-season game is usually the one game where teams actually line up and play with any sort of game plan. The starters normally play the entire first half.

oh yeah I love it...in about two weeks everybody is be asking for us to shell out draft pics for these people......I've Spoted TO and now i seeing the Rivers and Aaron Rogers threads.....

Rivers reminds me a lot of Chad Pennington. Their mechanics are about as different as can be but their results are the same. Neither has a great arm, both are considered weak in the long game but both defy those odds by completing a high percentage of their deep passes. Accuracy is the key for both players as well as how they manage the game. They both can make lots of calls on the line, figure out the defense, etc. They're both patient luring in the defense with the short game, and both have that uncanny sense of when they've lured the defenders in with the short game enough to bomb one long over the middle for a huge gain...and accurate enough to make every one of those throws count. Rivers may have the edge over Pennington in his ability to stay healthy...though I realize that has not been tested in the pros.

Anyway, this offense is not for Rivers, or for Brees. When Linehan stepped into this role as OC, I dropped any fancies of Phil Rivers or Drew Brees. At this point Brees would be better for us, as he really has developed a fairly decent arm...somehow, he made his throws stronger, faster, etc with the offseason regiments he's adopted. It's strange, I bet there's a lot of QBs wish they knew how, but Schottenheimer is right when he says that Brees somehow increased the speed of his throws 25% or more.

If there's a guy worthy. Wonder if Saban's got a guy in mind that is still in college right now...

Jason White just retired, by the way. Pulled an Eric Crouch, lol.

how about we draft our own qb from next years draft?

well imo it will be either rivers or brees but i think it will be brees because we prob want be picking until about 10-15 in next years draft and there are other teams like the titans that r looking 4 a qb so i think that there wont be a qb left that will be as good as brees or rivers left so imo that is the way we will go not unless we get the #1 or #2 pick it want be a qb in the draft imo;)

Gosh if the Titans are looking for a QB I wonder if that means they'd get rid of Steve McNair or Billy Volek. I'd take either here. Both could be successful in Miami.

I honestly don't think we'll get Brees or Rivers. Neither fits this offense. We kept Feeley because he has an arm, and we got Frerotte because he has an arm. This offense, the guys that have success in this type of offense are very strong armed guys...Culpepper, Frerotte, Bouman, Jeff George...thats what they look for. Brees has much better arm strength now that he's adjusted his throwing motion and workout regiment, but even so, it's not up there enough to consider plunking down the major bucks that will be necessary.

they are saying that mcnair might retire next year so that leaves billy ? and if we like a jeff george than (and i know he is getting old) but DA bears just released him:tongue:

These coaches aren't dumb enough to mess with George. If McNair still wants to play, on the other hand...

The Titans drafting a QB?? I'm not sure if you've seen Volek play but he could start on a majority of the NFL teams. He will be and is the successor to McNair whenever he decides to retire. I think they also wrapped him up in a 4 year contract for close to 7m last year.

I agree with you completely CK. I wasn't impressed by Rivers arm strength at all, his nice deep pass seemed to float into the recievers hands and when he tried to put some juice on the ball it teneded to be very low. Now on the other hand, too bad we couldn't get a young Brett Favre, that guy can sure thow the ball anywhere he wants.

ckparrothead, since when has arm strength been a knock against Rivers? The only negative I've constantly heard is his sidearm throwing motion. In fact, I thought he impressed a lot of people in the Senior Bowl with his deep passes, and that's why his stock rose so much in the draft. Maybe I'm remembering incorrectly though?
