Phins talking point: Moore not going anywhere soon, Egnew not making an impact yet

Egnew was badly coached, IMO. I don't believe his skills were developed one bit at Mizzou. I think they just ran him out there as a big receiver-type target on a limited number of routes.
This kid can separate. This kid can block. This kid can be a reliable target. Someone just needs to show him and half an offseason is a bit early to be calling it a waste of time. He needs more teaching.
But he's way behind a guy like Fleener (who in my view is 80% coaching/practice and 20% talent).

Can you give me specific instances of seeing consistent separation because I simply don't see it after watching 9 games of his so far.

i don't even care if he blocks...him and charles clay aren't gonna line up in line and handle anyone anyways...but how bout you separate against lbs out of your cuts and in your damn routes...do something other than get locked down by camp fodder

he's making the team...he's just not gonna do anything...you got charles clay dropping the ball all over the place and this kid can't even get a sniff...he didn't separate from lbs in college he's definitely not gonna in the pros...this o is screaming for a true vertical seam threat with speed and size and a large catch radius at te and this kid can't even beat camp fodder coverage consistently...

I have no idea where you're getting the idea that Egnew can't separate. He can move very well for a guy of his size, what he has to work on is his blocking. He can bust the seam, he can be a threat for us, and my guess is that he'll do just fine as a pass catching TE.

As an example, look at this clip at :25, also at 2:40- Egnew can move:

you and ck and slimm can all be on the same page...that guy doesn't separate on tape in 2011...he makes a lot of catches with guys draped all over him...i don't care if he can run 4.5 even though he doesn't play that fast he's a one speed athlete that has no burst and explosion in and out of cuts...he's meh...straight line guy...i didn't say he couldn't run i said he can't separate look at his senior bowl work in one on ones there's nothing there...much better looking prospect in 2010 when he weighed less

and for thirteen that kid couldn't block if his life depended on it...

He's got no hips especially any ability to explode of your his breaks once he drops those hips in his routes.

i mean guys that size unless they're flat out freaks are gonna have some stiff hips...it's just part of the package...but it's a lot more than just hips with this kid...that one speed stuff is a problem...no gear down no explosion when he crosses a defenders face...i watched guys run in his hip tapping him all over the field whenever he actually ran anything down the field...his value underneath was more about soft coverage recognizing these coverages and sitting down in front of it...and then as soon as he does get the ball there's no breaking tackles or run after the catch he's tackled...

i just don't get the hype...the combine number aren't supported by the tape...that missou system did that kid a favor...he's a te who plays a wrs game wthout the suddenness and explosion and at this level...good luck with that...drop 10-15 lbs and try to salvage something...

the problem is, if you're trying to hold on to Matt Moore until some point early in the year, you may have already lost Pat Devlin.

All 31 other teams had the opportunity to draft Devlin but selected other players in all rounds.
All 31 other teams had the opportunity to steal Devlin from the Dolphin Practice Squad last year but all declined.
All 31 other teams will be trying to stash prospective talent on their own Practice Squads.
If Philbin and Sherman really like Devlin then they will give him a roster spot (and try to stash Chris Hogan on the Practice Squad instead)

Separating against linebackers and safeties against 1-on-1 coverage isn't Egnew's game, but it doesn't have to be. Most TE's in the NFL don't.

To be effective, it's more critical that you're able to use your body and make catches when you are covered. Separating vertically is more important to a seam threat than separating in and out of breaks. There ain't many TE's that can do that consistently.

He's got some developing to do because the scheme got him open in the Big-12. His skills will have to get him open in the NFL. He's got some of those too, just give it time.

Jermichael Finley caught 6 passes as a rookie.

Hoops you didn't even think Charles Clay would make the roster last year. Give these kids a little time to develope their skills. Some of 'em aren't even used to being this far away from mom and dad for pete's sake.

I cant believe you linked to :25 seconds in that video as if it showed separation. I'm watching a 4.7 football player out there. Hooshoops is dead on the money - Egnew makes catches with guys all over him and he just doesn't make the big plays you'd expect of a guy with his size and speed.

thats true i didn't think clay would make the roster cause i couldnt envision a roll for him...especially as an every down te which is what we are trying to do now...not big enough imo...not to mention he ran his routes at the combine with his hands by his side only brought them up when the ball was on the way...seemed odd to me...but i'll pass on giving egnew time...i think he blows...

to each his own

Given that he did a good job of separating from coverage there and making the play, I hardly get your point. To each his own- in Egnew I see a seam buster and a guy with separation ability. I think that he'll be fine as a pass catching TE and he'll beat 1 on1 coverage his share of the time.

you cant judge anyone of the rookies at this point, Tannehill had a great scrimmage the other day outperformed both Moore and Garrard but I doubt he plays well enough to be starter for week 1. he needs time just like Egnew needs time. Im looking forward to Lamar Miller more then any other rookie, he has great vision and speed but he probably won't see the field til Bush and/or Thomas goes down

I think that he will, and he'll return kickoffs as well. Dude is a special talent.

maybe its just me but if the guys making those kind of hotly contested catches in college despite a system that is set up for him to succeed against lesser athletes much lesser athletes for the most part stands to reason that those contested catches he made prior aren't gonna translate to the pro level...

good luck getting anything close to jermichael finley in 2 years out of that...

Nothing is in granite....Tannehill has more talent than Garrard and Moore combined...if the little lightbulb goes off for him as to the speed of the game....He is ready.

7 out of the last 8 top ten quarterbacks started for their team....in 1984 it is more than obvious in retrospect that Daniel Constantine Marino should have been starting from day one.

Quit drinking the Omar Kelly kool-aid...lets let the rest of camp and pre-season playout.....then it will be apparent who should be starting.
