Phins talking point: Moore not going anywhere soon, Egnew not making an impact yet

you got anthony fasano as your primary in line te off tackle what have you...who watches that kids missou tape and says i can't wait to get to work with him in line etc??? the value that i see is flexed out and off the los in space...where he can release off the los clean and then based on coverages sit down in front of zones etc and run underneath routes off the threat of his vertical speed if the coverage player respects it...

take one of these scrub wrs off the field and flex that kid out or get him off the damn los...his game is so much finesse its rediculous

I don't know if Michael Egnew will ever be a stab you in the heart blocker but he can certainly be an assignment blocker from on the line. He can take on defensive ends, need be. There are very few actual stab you in the heart types out there in the NFL right now.

His blocking was inconsistent at Missouri, not non-existent.

Hoops...I think they are just trying to develop him as a player more...thats what TC is for. I don't think anyone is saying he is going to be some beast of a blocker in-line..or at least Im not...but they want him to at least know what he's doing. As Slimm said...they know what he can do being split out. I think they will continue to work on his blocking in TC...but you can bet when the bullets start flying this year you will see him flexed out plenty if he gets PT. I think they will ease him into things...but I look for him to be on the field in the red zone a lot

thats fine develop him...i get that...but i think we should be hearing more about this kid chewing up the scrubs at least as a pass receiver than we have...especially if they have been flexing him out or lining him up off the los in team drills...11 on 11 and 7 on 7 stuff redzone work etc...

If they didn't want a guy to develope as a blocker and pass receiver, they would have just drafted a wide receiver, hoops. You're answering your own questions.

Their intent isn't to turn him into Anthony Munoz as a blocker, they have to make him a sound assignment blocker. Coach him on leverage and technique.

Like I said, they have bigger plans for him than just playing an overgrown wide receiver. Wouldn't be much point in paying these coaches what they make if they're just going to copy what their college coaches had them doing and ignore developing other aspects. Hell, most of you could do that.

so what is the bigger plan than in your opinion??? what down the road am i missing with my evaluation???

Again, the plan is simply to develope him into as complete of a tight end as they can make him.

They can't count on Fasano to be on the field for every single snap. Nor Charles Clay. What are you gonna do if they get hurt, hoops? Stick Tannehill in there at TE?

Player development is getting the guy ready for the long term and short term if he's needed. They know what he needs work on just like you do.

if fasano gets hurt thats what mastrud is for...if not i'm sure i can find someone to come in and help me in line in pass pro off the street in the short term if need be...if clay gets hurt egnew gets baptism by fire...

or i pull someone else in off another teams cuts at final cuts...which might be the route we go for a 4th te anyways...you line up egnew and ask him to block quality pass rushers in this league and your qb will be peeling himself off the deck...at least off everything i've seen

if all else fails david garrard plays te...cause tannehill starts at qb

If Egnew cant stay in and block, then the defense will know what you are doing, and they can either put a man on him or blitz his side because they know he isnt staying in. Being able to block will actually help his passing game. I wasnt happy with the pick either but I think he can be good.

It don't work that way. Practice is for working and getting better at the things you need to work on and get better at. Otherwise they'd just send Egnew home early everyday.

They didn't draft Egnew in the 3rd round so they could start signing guys off the street in case they had to reach down further on the depth chart.

New England uses Aaron Hernandez plenty both in-line, and flexed in a 3-point stance to flank Gronkowski on the end. Miami will need Egnew to be versed in this aspect in 3 tight end sets, particularly in the red zone. He'll have some opportunities to catch a few touchdowns as a rookie from there.

It's not been in Joe Philbin's history at Green Bay to keep a one dimensional blocker like Jeron Mastrud, so it will be interesting to see if he sticks on the roster.

It's precisely what makes New England's offense as multiple as it is. They can go 5-wide or line up in double-tights and never have to change from the 12-personnel package.

Mastrud has had his chances, I'd rather roll with with Les Brown, as premature as that may seem to be.

Brown is extremely raw. He's more destined for the PS unless he shows up in preseason.

That's a fair assessment. What I'm saying is that given the option of Brown or Mastrud I'd choose Brown, I just don't think that Mastrud deserves a roster spot from what I've seen. He's had time to show something, and really hasn't shown much.
