Play by play analysis...Feeley led offense...

It's funny your mentioning Gannon, because he toiled in obscurity for 10 years before turning it around, and he was productive for four years thereafter. Not saying that will happen with Gus, but the hooky sppoky signs are there, if you want to hunt for 'em. ;)

Thats why I said he could pull a Rich Gannon...

He was doing pretty good in Washington until his injury. I didn't count Cincy or Detroit because he appeared in four games in one stop and nine in the other. I don't count that as being given a chance to be a starter.
61.3, 70.2, 79.3, 73.8(his "pro-bowl' year) and 45.5....were his QB efficiency ratings in each of his years in Washington.

If that's pretty good, we made a big mistake getting rid of Jay.

Babysitting? If I recall correctly, he was being brought in to START in Cincy.. and he flopped and flopped hard.. He was given the reigns and did nothing.. Akili was DONE at that point.

Although, After seeing brief moments of him in Minny, I think he finally found a system that works well with him.. Its possible he could pull a Rish Gannon, but I wouldnt hold my breath.
You dont recall correctly then. Gus was there in 2002, akili's last stand. Stats werent great but all he had to do on offense was turn and hand the ball to Dillon

Then again judging by what some of tha AJ lovers have said (not necessarily skape) Aj was handicapped by the same things by the same things that would handicap any qb in Cincy (at that time) such as his poor surrounding cast.

I only counted it because he did take the job away from the starter.

Ok end of work day.

Go get em Gus.

Fair enough. You have good numbers., too. :D

We'll se ewhat thge ratings are at the end of preseason. Make no mistake, I want the best QB to get the job. In fact, I would prefer Feeley get the nod and go like gangbusters. I just think there could be worse things than Frerotte starting, provided he has shown a clear edge for the whole of the preseason.

I just did some research.. it appears your memory is fuzzy..

Gus Frerotte won preseason competition to open the year as starting QB

He WON the competition... Akili was DONE. Akili only played that year because Frerotte SUCKED and LeBeau tried to spice things up by playing Kitna, then Akili.

BTW, did you even look at the stats you provided? 1 TD, 5 INTS

Personally, I don't see either of these QBs being able to win a shoot-out on a regular basis, which I think we may need if the secondary and D-line is as bad as it looked last night. So I think we may be in trouble no matter who starts.

Isn't it ironic that all the fighting on the boards today is about the two QBs who actually played well rather than the starting defense which got creamed by the Bears' starters?

I'm somehwat ashamed of myself...:hitself:

Here is some more Boik:
Gus is the guy
Gus Frerotte came to Cincinnati looking for a fair shot at earning the starting quarterback job. He came because he trusted head coach Dick LeBeau when LeBeau said he'd get a fair shot, something he felt he wasn't going to receive with his previous employer, the Denver Broncos. On Monday, LeBeau named Frerotte, a nine-year veteran, to start the Bengals' season opener Sept. 8 against the San Diego Chargers at Paul Brown Stadium.

http://64.233.161.104/search?q=cach...us+Frerotte+Cincinnati&hl=en&client=firefox-a

What say you?

BTW, please do give this article a read: http://www.cincypost.com/2002/aug/27/beng082702.html

Written just as he was named starter in Cinci because of LeBeau's "gut feeling".. He backed up his coach's "gut feeling" by going 1TD and 5INTs in 4 games.. He flopped.

A telling quote: The pressure to produce will mount more as the season goes on. The Bengals have more depth and talent than at any time in the past 11 seasons, the last time they had a winning record and made the playoffs. If the Bengals are to break those streaks, the production at quarterback, whether it is Frerotte, Kitna or even third-stringer Akili Smith, will have to improve.

This seems to nullify your entire argument that this team was in the same position as AJ's 2004 Dolphins team..

He needs to see the blitz a little quicker than he is currently. That may come with more experience in the new offensive scheme. That to me was the biggest difference between him and Ferrotte. It just seemed like Gus was able to get the ball out a little quicker and he knew who to go to when the heat was on.

First play:1/10 double TE set....looks like it's going to be a toss sweep to the right....O-Gun jumps the snap and is there to disrupt the play before it starts....Feeley pulls the ball in and takes the loss instead of trying to make the pitch.

Second play:1/5 I formation TE lined up on the left....two recever's split wide....7 step drop... plants and throws a comeback route at the sideline....no pressure....perfect throw....Or as Michaels said..."right on the money"

Third play:1/10 single back, 3 WR, TE on the left.....Hand off to Gordon, up the middle gain of three...

Fourth play: 2/7 Single back with a FB split left....Two WR up top...TE on the left again.....Hand off to gordon who gets a yard maybe....

5th play: 3/6....3 WR Shotgun with split backs....3 seconds exactly from the time the ball is snapped until St Clairs man gets by him and nails Feeley...Just barely enough time for Feeley, who is looking at Thompson all the way, to throw a 20 yard pass that he dropped right into a dead zone between 3 defenders....great pass....Thompson drops it.

Michaels says, "He laid it right there on a rope but Thompson couldn't make the catch..."

The Bears did not blitz on this series...Maimi did blitz on their first series on defense.

Punt...

next series...

first play: 30 yard line 1/10...Tw WR, single back (ricky) Two TEs lined up on the right side...RM comes in motion to the left before the snap....Three step drop, quick throw to Booker, complete for 16 yards....

second play: 1/10.....cut back in late...the play is already running....hand off to ricky who goes up the middle for two yards...

third play: 2/8....double TE formation. single back...5 step drop, no pressure, ball was out in 2.5 seconds........never looked away from Chambers....incomplete in the dirt....

4th play; 3/8.......Shotgun, 3 wide, split backs...Trying to set up a screen....CB comes untouched on a blitz....ricky runs into the back of number 78 trying to get out of the mess....no one to throw the ball to, has to get rid of it or take the sack....throws the ball toward the area Ricky is in, hits Carey in the side and falls incomplete....wasn't trying to complete the pass, was trying to get rid of it.....risky play, could have been IG, or illegal receiver but, he gets away with it.

Madden." I will say this, the blitz in the first quater is pretty heavy,....LBers are your first blitzers, then safetys, then you go nickell and you bring a corner....I'll tell you AJ Feeley knew he just had to get rid of that ball"

punt

next series

First play: 1/10 @ the 20....double TE, single back....3 step drop quick out to Lee, slightly behind him Lee can't stop his momentum from taking him out of bounds after a 1 yard gain...

second play: 2/9....I formation, TE lined up to the right....hand off to ricky, no where to go up the midle....picks up a couple...

third play: 3/7...Shotgun, single back, 3 wide....swing pass to ricky, good throw, doesn't cause Ricky to break stride....Ricky picks up 3 yards then slips and falls down....

punt

next series...

first play:1/10 @ the 11....(Gus Frerotte is loosening up according to Michaels)..single back, 3 wide....5 step drop....as soon as he plants, Brown gets his arm from the backside, he pulls free and steps up, right into Urlacher who came through untouched, Feeley tries to spin away but, it's too late, Urlacher creams him.....Feeley can't get his heavily taped shoe on and that's when he comes out...

There it is....an unbiased look at EXACTLY what happened...

Somehow there are Gusketeers who got Feeley played awfull out of this.....those fans are wrong.

Gotta say you nailed it on the nose. I think from hear on out...we need posts like these. Very unbiased.

Thanks for taking the effort and time I know it took you to do this. Im sure I speak for everyone when I say we appreciate it.

Are you kidding me? Behind Harrington in college after he got injured, 3rd on Phillys depth chart, couldn't beat out Fiedler last year, doing a poor job of beating out Frerotte this year. That's a pretty slim chance.

Man I am tired of your sorry excuses, Feeley was only third in Phili because korky detmer was the holder for fg's and here in Oregon Feeley had elbow surgery and never had a chance to get his job back as harrington was playing lights out when he came back its not because he wasnt good, it was a momentum thing!
