Poll: Record Needed For Flores To Be "coach Of The Year"

Few give the Fins any chance of being other than a bottom of the barrel team - at least on paper.

Given that low expectation, what would it take for Flores to be COTY?

I would say 9-7 whether we make the playoffs with that record or not. But more so than record the teams optics will matter a lot i.e. whether we have an identity, whether we are exciting to watch etc.

For COTY it would def take a playoff berth to be considered, nothing less. He's the Dolphins Coach, it would take something extraordinary to even be considered.

My own thinking is that it would take a 10-6 and play off wild card for this to happen as there are other first time coaches who might also be digging out of holes, very notably Fangio in Denver with much more to work with and of course Kitchen in Cleveland who should very easily transcend last year's losing record.

Remember, even Sparano after the great 11-5 turnaround, was runner up to Smith in Atlanta

10 and 6 and win a playoff game might do it unless some other coach takes an average team deep in the playoffs or gets to the super bowl

With all the predictions for a crappy season that I've read about, I think a 9-7 season whether playoffs or not, could/should, at least get Flores in the running for COTY.

He's an Ex-Patriot media darling, he may have a leg up. They'll have the opportunity to spin it as a long-time Patriot Coach wins COTY. Taking away from the accomplishment of our team and associating it back to the Pats giving them the credit.

I think 10-6 and a playoff appearance would definitely secure the award for Flores. If we don't win 10 games or don't make the playoffs, I don't think we'll get enough publicity to win the award even if he deserves it.

Last time a coach won the award with more than 5 losses was 2009. I guess there's a slim shot at 10-6 but going to need at least a victory in a playoff game.
