I have a feeling you will be saying the same of Mularkey in a year or two.. Should've kept Phillips.
I am happy to have Mularkey. He played in the NFL so he understands the players more than most NFL head coaches. His philosphy is to put every player in a position to succeed. He develops his plays this way because he was a 12th round draft pick that had a good NFL career by learning how to use his talents to maximum advantage.
He has assembled a great staff:
Jerry Gray-Defensive Coordinator Had the #2 ranked Defense last year, 1st in Turnovers with a lot of games missed by Lawyer Milloy and Troy Vincent.
Tom Clements-Offensive Coordinator- Finalist for the Notre Dame job did a good job in his first year and we should see him earn his keep by easing JP Losman into the starting QB role this year.
Sam Wyche- QB's coach- Tutored Joe Montana and Boomer Esiason, now is working on his next pupil in JP Losman. Also led the Bengals to the Superbowl as a head coach and is still one of the most innovative offensive minds in the game.
Jim McNally-Offensive Line Again, one of the best in the business. One of the best teachers of line play, has taken castoffs and undrafted players throughout his career and turned them into good NFL players.
Bobby April-Special Teams Took one of the worst NFL special teams units and turned them into the #1 unit in his first year. The Bills scored 5 TD's on special teams including punt returns, kickoff returns, and blocked punts...something not seen since 1959 when the Chicago Cardinals registered 5 special teams TD's.
The thing that I like best about Mularkey so far is that he has a killer instinct. When we get someone down we don't just play not to lose we go for the kill. That's how the Bills had the largest average margin of victory in their wins for any team last year. After the slow start, the Bills beat up on every team not named Pittsburgh or New England.
This is the year we should really see Mularkey open it up. The first year was about setting the tone, installing his systems, etc. This is when we will see the crazy reverses, WR options, etc that we saw when he was the offensive coordinator at Pittsburgh.
BTW, if having a winning season in Mularkey's first year should make us wish for Wade Phillips back, will you ask for Dave Wannstedt back if Saban has a losing first year?!
