Postscripts, notes, thoughts from Dolphins' preseason opener

Seth Lobato for 3 1/2 quarters....lol we still could have won.

Barry suggest the Dolphins may only go with two QB's to save a roster spot and put him on the practise squad.
i think he's gone as soon as Matt and Delvin are healthy.

By the way the game is on NFL network right now if anyone wants to rewatch.

I have two thoughts on the illegal contact rules:

1. They had to do something. Enforcement of illegal contact, defensive holding, and pass interference has been terrible and uneven, and if their emphasis is on calling it every time it's committed -- rather than whenever they feel like it -- that's a good change toward fairness of officiating.

2. You're not going to see this many penalties during the season. They will either relent and dial back on enforcement, or the players will change the way they cover.

Either way, if you think this 'ruins' the game, you can thank Seattle. If they hadn't done what they did so effectively, and then bragged about their technique for getting away with penalties to some guy from Sports Illustrated, it might not even be an issue.

Seattle banked on the fact that the refs would not call it every play and they were right. I just wish the league would have called their bluff and made an example out of them one game by calling it every time before moving on to punishing the entire NFL. Though if it were up to me I would prefer they dial back the rules a little to make what the Seahawks were doing at least closer to legal, because that is what football should look like.

Goodell: GOD DAMN IT!! Their Defense made Manning look silly on the biggest stage, can't have a repeat of that embarrassing game. GET ME MY RULEBOOK AND PENCIL!!!!!

Probably some truth to this.

Overall, I am encouraged by the way the starting offense moved down the field and scored with ease. That was great to see.
Also seeing Landry in the game making big plays was very exciting. I was also pleased that for most of the game we had no sacks and a decent pocket, all of this bodes well for the offense.

What I though was disappointing is that we didn't play tough and smart all the way to 00.0
After watching our 4th string put together a drive to get down to 1st and goal from the 5 and then botch the exchange to lose the game is all I will remember from this game.
Our run defense looked good in the stats, but long runs by Atlanta were called back by technical penalties. Our LB's are horrible and our secondary is questionable at best.

I hope our offense can score 45 points a game, we are going to need every point we can get.

The kick returner is going to be interesting. I like Thigpen on KO's but, he needs to add something to Lazor's O as well as KO's are diminished. I like Landry on punt returns, and he does save a roster spot. The special team's blocking and tackling looks a lot better than most games last year, even at this early time.

Landry had 1 great return. Until he does it with consistency and scores some TD's, the job is Thigpens.

I was impressed by new TE Brackett. He seems to have a lot more athleticism than I expected. Could even be a nice threat with his size and speed. He may be moving up the depth chart in to that number 3 or 4 TE. He certainly showed more than I have seen from Egnew at any time.

They brought him back in just because we had so many TE's injured but he looked better than Egnew has in three years.
I also want to see what Lynch brings to the table.

As much as I hate the idea of neutering the defensive backs by calling everything it might actually help us more than any team in the league. There is statistical evidence that suggests every team still runs the ball too much even in this new fangled passing league, the evidence shows that teams were already too slow to push the envelope and these new rules pushes it out even further. Depending on how far they take it it may very well behoove you to just pass every single down now, and if you need to run to keep them honest do it with option plays from the QB. You could easily rack up 50 or 100 yards in penalties which would more than make up for the lack of rushing yards. Philbin doesn't care about being "balanced" and under the right circumstances he would pass it every time.

And on defense we were already ahead of the curve in both the style we run with the off-man and the philosophy of stopping the pass first.

We are already well positioned to take advantage of these changes and that may help squeeze out a win or two while the rest of the league plays catch-up.

I like Thigpen as much as anyone, and would have no problem with that. The question comes with value vs a roster spot.

I'm good with Thigpen as the kickoff returner and Landry as a punt returner.

I remember seeing Cone...Brackett...some people made some plays. Never heard of Brackett before but when I was excited over that catch I looked him up, and he's drifted around teams a while, always seems to get hurt, probably too tall and awkward...
