Postscripts, notes, thoughts from Dolphins' preseason opener

I remember seeing Cone...Brackett...some people made some plays. Never heard of Brackett before but when I was excited over that catch I looked him up, and he's drifted around teams a while, always seems to get hurt, probably too tall and awkward...

Brackett was only signed recently due to all our injuries but looked at least as good as Egnew has the last two years. Doubt he makes the team though unless he continues playing like that this preseason if he stays around.
Cone was a special teams demon for Atlanta in the past but the numbers at wideout are against him.

Last year, on Atlanta's special teams, he ranked #13, and was tied for #386 in the NFL. Demons should be ranked higher. :)

Brackett intrigues me a lot. The beat writers have said that he flashed more in practice in the short time he's been here than Michael Egnew has in two years. Certainly looked decent in the game.

Seattle banked on the fact that the refs would not call it every play and they were right. I just wish the league would have called their bluff and made an example out of them one game by calling it every time before moving on to punishing the entire NFL. Though if it were up to me I would prefer they dial back the rules a little to make what the Seahawks were doing at least closer to legal, because that is what football should look like.

Goodell: GOD DAMN IT!! Their Defense made Manning look silly on the biggest stage, can't have a repeat of that embarrassing game. GET ME MY RULEBOOK AND PENCIL!!!!!

To be honest, if not the Seahawks, it would have been someone else. I think in this case, it's the fact that they flat out bragged about it to journalists, and discussed the way they are taught when to do it and how to test if they can get away with it that caused the NFL to bring the hammer down. You know the Patriots do the same thing, they're just smart enough not to brag about it.

Ultimately what I'd like to see is more consistent enforcement of a standard that allows defensive backs to play good, physical football. The way things have been going the past few years, we have a really lousy situation in which the enforcement is inconsistent and the rules stink.

i was just repeating what the Atlanta announcer said having never watched his play there. No matter i doubt he makes the 53.

Brady bragged about the Pats doing it also this off-season.

"Do you love to see the defense’s physicality, even though it might go beyond what’s acceptable?

Brady: Yeah, they are a physical defense. I think all of those guys are veterans. They know how to get away with certain plays. Like holding, for example – it happens every play, so if you look close enough you’re going to find holding. There is an edge that you can always push it to. If you look at the offensive line, there’s holding on every play. That’s just the way football is. You’ve just got to do it in a way where the refs don’t see it and don’t call it. But that same thing goes for the defensive backfield. If there is a way to gain leverage on a particular route, then you’re going to use it. The veterans know how to do it better; they know right where the limit is.

I think the best defenses I’ve ever played against – they get their hands on you, and they don’t let you get into your route, and they disrupt the timing. Our corners, Kyle Arrington, and linebackers in coverage do a great job of that, too. But we’ve got to learn to be just as physical. We’ve got to learn to push off in the right way and get our leverage because that’s how it’s going to be when it matters."

I'm sure that thrilled ol' Billy B.

It will be curious how the officials call a New England game considering the hands on corners they'll start this year.

Official's dilemma . Hey these guys are all over the receivers but it is the Pats so should i look the other way?

* Just saw your post PhinFan. Good Brady quote.

Wheeler needs to be excused,

for good. They need to bite the bullet and send him on his way, AWAY...

Depends on if they've cashed the check yet.

The kick returner is going to be interesting. I like Thigpen on KO's but, he needs to add something to Lazor's O as well as KO's are diminished. I like Landry on punt returns, and he does save a roster spot. The special team's blocking and tackling looks a lot better than most games last year, even at this early time.

We don't need Thigpen anymore. Use Landry, and use Thigpen's spot for someone who can play....
