Your are right, calling Rogers and Whitner low level was harsh on my part. My point is though that these were not big time free agent signings that shows like ESPN and NFL Network would talk about for days. They weren't Peyton Manning or Mario Williams. They were not top tier additions. For example, Scout.com had Rogers as the 11th best cornerback on the free agent market and Whitner as the 11th best safety. Those are not league ratings, those are what they felt they ranked of the free agent class last August. They were not viewed then as big time additions, and that is the point I am trying to make. They exceeded expectations. For giggles, Richard Marshall is rated as the 6th best free agent cornerback this year.
I am not saying Miami is going to the Championship game or going to win 13 games. I am not even sold that they are a playoff team this year. However, can they be a team that wins 9 games and is in contention for a playoff spot? Probably. Doesn't mean they will reach that level, but I don't think it is crazy to think they couldn't. The reasons I think Miami can have a good season is because a new coaching staff usually brings a fresh spark(look at 2008), the schedule is very soft compared to last year, and besides Brandon Marshall this is pretty much the same team(pre-draft) that was fielded in 2011. They finished the season on a 6-3 run, dominated the lesser teams and lost to the top to elite teams like the Patriots, Giants and Cowboys by a combined 7 points in the second half of the year. It is not unrealistic to think this team can build on the growth they had at the end of last season and be better this season. That is why I think it is ridiculous to think this team will be a one or two win team and get the 2013 1st overall pick. Nothing really happened(except for Marshall) that would take this team that far back. I think this team can reach 8-9 wins, compete for the playoffs and continue to grow in the coming years. That is my hope and expectation.
I would rather feel like that than root for the team to lose.
