Pre-season: Game 1 Evaluation

One problem I have is that Feeley played pretty well, I just wish he would step up in the pocket when a blitz comes from the outside. He was pretty accurate tonight too and derrius dropped one right to him. Frerotte still outplayed him a little tonight though.

yeah he did step up in the pocket....and got hurt from a blitzing Urlacher

People see what they want to see. The truth is there was nothing to complain about in AJ's play. When he had time to throw, he looked great. If Derrius Thompson catches the ball right in his hands, who knows how much better Feeley's night would have been.

As for Frerotte, his 2 biggest plays were luck. On the 44 yard pass to Chambers, he should have been sacked for a safety. Then, the ball was badly underthrown, but Chambers came back for the catch. He's lucky it wasn't intercepted. And on the TD to Gilmore, Frerotte admitted the pass wasn't even meant for Gilmore. He was trying to throw to the TE, but the ball slipped out of his hand. Frerotte played fine overall, but people are getting too carried away with his performance. It was nothing special.

The bottom line is this. Unless our line gets better at opening holes for the running game and picking up blitzes, whoever plays QB for us is going to struggle.

Once again, if the ball WASNT underthrown it would have been intercepted. He put it in a place that Chambers can get it. Both DBs were AHEAD of Chambers. I dont think a good evasion of a sack was "luck". Maybe AJ should learn a little about this "luck".

lol@feeley being outplayed... first off all when feeley was in we were trying to run more, which was unsuccessful, kinda the reason why he only had 7 pass attempts leading to 3rd and longs... then when frerrote came in we basically passed much more than run, frerrotes 2 big plays were really bad throws that the reciever made a good play on, the throw to chambers was very underthrown, and the pass to gilmore was way to far to the outside, great play by gilmore by the way... besides that when frerrote was in there they called about 4 WR screens, not too tough to throw the ball on those patterns...

i wonder how many of you actually watched the game? how can you say frerrote outplayed feeley by alot? yes the team scored when frerrote was in there, but if you watched the actual QB play and the pressure on them and the kinda throws they were asked to make and the throws they did make, i would say neither took an advantage...

Not true. Chambers had just got by his man when he had to stop and come back for the ball. There are plays where it's good to underthrow receivers. Marino made this an art form. 44-yard passes are not passes meant to be underthrown. That leaves the ball in the air too long, and easy for a defender to make the play. And Frerotte really did nothing to avoid the sack. The Bears' player just missed what should have been an easy sack. Even Madden pointed this out during the game.

my only statement i have is................god bless four more preseason games.

Now... I wonder... if it had been #9 throwing that pass, would your assesment still be the same? or would you bash Jay for making a bad throw?

I woke up this morning and I take a look at these boards and my chin hits the ground. I can't beleive a single person is defending AJ Feeley, the guy has a good arm but quite frankly his awareness of his alternate recievers and the pash rush do not exist. When Gus came in he was under the same pressure but dealt with it by getting rid of the ball, he at least gives us a chance to compete. I hear well the bears blitzed or we were trying to run the football.... excuses. Hell I would try to run the ball with feeley in there too. The guy was terrible, end of story.

Other notes:

Lee - very athletic but I can't stand him, he has no football sense.

Boston - very encouraged, I saw no limp and he had some speed.

Berlin - honestly I was very impressed, I was surprised how strong his arm looked and he had a fast release. In fact I was shocked when I saw him play. IMO, the qb chart should be: Gus, Sage, Brock ... feeley should be outright cut.

Nadar/Diamond - interesting prospects I would take both over Lee.

WR in general is our best position, I would keep chambers/booker/boston/gilmore/welker and maybe one of the younger guys. I would cut thompson yesterday.

RB's I didn't see much, but I would like to see more of KJ Harris. He started slow but then picked it up some.

Mckinney blows, hadnot is clearly better.

Now for the defense: Folks this is gonna be a tough year for the defense. Our secondary is bad. Now I may get bashed for this but Sam Madison is and has always been AFRAID of contact. He didn't want any part of that tackle(long run) and I have seen it before from him. He is simply not willing to do what it takes.

Edwards... cut him now.

I didn't notice much from the linebackers, spragan showed up a few times, and I didn't notice chowder.

All in all I was encouraged by what I saw but clearly we have a long way to go. I expect CB to be a high priority next offseason.

Who knows if it would be picked off if it's not underthrown but I disagree if you're stating Gus intentionally put it only where Chambers could get it. When you throw behind a DB you don't put that much air under it as it gives the db too much time to react. Luckily, Chambers made a great adjustment and beat the DB.

I also think the missed sack doesn't happen 8 times out of 10. The guy totally whiffed. Unfortunately, it's hard to get a gauge on either QB until the O-line gets its act together but that's why there is a pre-season.

Maybe the QB's might have looked better if Lee had not dropped 3 passes thrown to him. If this guy makes it pass the first cuts I'm going into shock!!

I thought that Feeley and Gus played about the same. You could really tell Gus had more experience than Feeley but I felt Feeley had better looking throws. Gus's long throws seemed to wobble and Feeleys were nice and tight. But of course this is MO only.

here is what will change on the depth chart if things continue as they were seen tonight.

A.J. played terribly. He got outplayed by Frerotte by a long shot.

Lamar Gordon, invisible. When he was there he was indecisive...Minor looked better than Gordon, but he was playing against 3rd stringers also.

Boston is going to move up to AT LEAST 3wr. If this team keeps thompson any higher than 4th we've got issues.

Overall WR is our best spot for depth. Keeping 6WRs including welker may be difficult, but 5 will probably happen.

McMichael was hidden from view and Donald Lee, well lets just say that Donald Lee better be able to hang on to the damn ball during and after the catch. If i'm remembering correctly, didnt he lose a few last year? PLEASE KEEP AHOLD OF THE BALL.

Just wanted to say that SOME of the things I said before in this post turned out right.

I'm just basking in the glow of being right for once, unlike a broken clock thats right twice a day.

I supported Jay back then, so probably not. But it depends on the play I guess.
