ProFootball Talk report Saints found blueprint to stop Wildcat

Henne was on the field Sunday because we don't have Cobbs anymore...but the one thing we have yet to run this yr that we did successfully last yr was the pitch the the Qb for the long pass....NO was leaving the door open for it the WHOLE game and we never once tried it.
And Cobbs was the one that would get open and catch that ball (I recall it against the Texans and I know there was at least one more instance).

But I agree with Ronnie passing. I'd like to see him pass it 2-3 times quite frankly. Did you see him scramble in the pocket and throw a great spiral to Fasano (a little high but Fasano should have had the concentration to bring it down). It doesn't have to be a sweep to the left Ronnie can scramble in the pocket and throw it from there. Ronnie is the Wildcat passing threat we need not White.

remember the wildcat was abandoned and also the fins would of gotten more yards if it were not for fasano...

well if fasano had caught ronnie's pass then what would this report be saying? /shrug I'm so over last weeks game lets move on.

Really, this is a key missing piece out of the Dolphins offense at the moment. If they had a Chris Cooly caliber T-end/Hback who is a threat to do more with the ball in his hands than just stumble over himself in the open field like Fasano does (on the rare occasions he actually catches the ball), the Wildcat would be much more dynamic.

Given Parcells' love affair with TE's, and he's used to having great ones almost everywhere he's been, I was shocked he didn't do more to upgrade the position even before the Martin injury.

Same personall with the exception of Henne instead of Cobbs. IMO we need to either get Ronnie throwing the ball or sub Henne out with Hilliard.

You might be right... but what i am pointing out is that with all the WR's and QB; the wildcat LOOKED more like the 2008 version. instead of the smash mouth version of 2009... in the Jumbo Package, it forces the defense to TRY and dis-engage the offensive blockers, whereas the 2008 version allows LB's and DB's to blitz the lanes and stop the ball carrier, because the offense doesn't have enough blockers... you saw that in the New Orleans game on several occasions... if Miami can somehow adjust to whatever scheme, the Jets deploy to attack the jumbo package, PERHAPS the Dolphins will have the same success!!! Ronnie didn't look comfortable throwing in the last game, due to the rush... Miami needs to find away to stop the heavy blitz of the Line of Scrimmage, if they are going to win this game against the Jets... Miami's O-line is far stronger than the Jets D-line, if the Jumbo Wildcat is used...

Blitzing the wildcat can be effective, but it involves two risks. First of course is a pass play, but the other is that if Ronnie/Ricky happens to get through anyway, they're probably going the distance.

Throwing more than occasionally from it, especially if it's a non-QB passing the ball, is asking for trouble. However, we'll need to be prepared to do something like that, one way or another.

tony sheffler is a free agent he is better than fasano

Here's the truth about the whole W/C ideal. You have to have the right personnel and the right execution. Doesn't work for most teams because they don't have one or both, so they don't waste the time on working it. We do, so it works for us. It gets stoped when teams put pressure on the formation and get penetration in the backfield. You do that by having people beat the blocks or send extra people on the blitz. Now in a 100% effective use of this formation, the runner has the option of throwing out of this. Thus why you see in college or HS and not as much in the pros. Typically RB's are great passers and QB's either aren't great runners or they don't want the QB's getting hit that much. SO you either need a QB that can run and handle/avoid the hits (ala M.Vick; Cunningham) or you have a RB that can effectively throw the ball. While Brown can do an ok job at throwing the ball, I think the more likely scenario would be to have a QB that can effectively run the ball. I think the thought process is to have White learn/develop into that role, but he's not progressed as well/quickly as they'd like. So our continued success with the W/C will depend on how much we are able to counter all these extra players in the box that are going to try and blow it up in the backfield.

If I had to guess (and I don't, but here it is anyway), I'd say they're practicing a screen pass to Ricky. It might be too much of a finesse pass to expect from Ronnie, but if it works, it's a TD.

Yea we shyed away from it and used it the wrong way. If they stuff it 2-3 times I suggest we just run out of standard formation. Very effective this year, I dont know why we dont just go I form on most plays. If they blitz everyone we need Ginn on the corner or something to just catch a short pass (yea I know hes gonna drop it) and run, like a screen.

Passing game improves = WC reduction.

When you have the 26th ranked passing attack, teams play against the run. Until the passing game improves, the Dolphins offense will become stagnant.

If no one can catch the ball from Henne, you think they will from Ronnie?

Obtaining receivers that can get open and catch the ball will go a long way to fix the offense.

Ahem, some common sense injected into this thread. We've averaged over 31 ppg since Henne became the starter. Stop the wildcat? Pfffft we still scored 14 points off of it. People get caught up in some meaningless stuff way too easily.
