I've read alot of negativity on this board regarding the signing of Cortland Finnegan and wanted to post this article to try to put a little perspective on him.

For one thing, the second year of the deal is not even guaranteed so it is a one year flyer, which could pay off "Brent Grimes Style" if we are lucky.

Worst case scenario this guy is a great mentor for Jamar Taylor and our other young corners.

St. Louis Rams cornerback Cortland Finnegan chose to play three game with a fractured orbital bone behind his left eye and blurred peripheral vision.

For a player who has made a career based on toughness, Finnegan simply couldn't help himself.

"I’m stubborn," Finnegan said. "I wanted to stick it out and show these guys I’m tough about it."

The Rams placed Finnegan on injured reserve in a move that might have flown under the radar as it was made Saturday afternoon. The move came after much consternation from all parties and the attempts by Finnegan to play through an injury he first suffered on Sept. 26 against San Francisco. Finnegan left that game with an apparent hamstring injury that would cost him the next three games but would later find out he suffered the more serious eye injury.

I personally love the move and believe he will pay off big time.

I like his intensity and hopefully that will rub off on our guys, especially R Jones who seemed a bit off last year. If he can stay healthy I think his play will be an awakening for some of the rooks who can't get on the field.

I REALLY hope you are right, and I am dead wrong. I'm going mostly on his play in 2012 when he played the full year and over 1,000 snaps. He was not the same player that he was in the past other than 4 games at the start. We shall see.

I have a feeling all of those that talked crap about this move will eat their words. I think Finnegan will pay off. He has a chip on his shoulder and is a competitor! It's do or die for him and his career, and he knows this.

I hope I'm wrong about him, but he has gotten worse every year recently. Grimes was still getting better at the time he got injured.

I'm with you man. I like the signing too. It is definitely a bit of a risky move, but no risk no reward. He had one bad year after averaging 80+ tackles a season for 7 years before that. I like that he is able to get into players heads so that's a plus to me. Coyle is known for getting the most out of his DBs and I think he will def get the most out of this guy. I really hope he comes back with a vengeance. At his age though he will need to work his ass off to get in shape and stay in shape.

He doesn't have the talent that Grimes has. Grimes prior to his injury was playing at a high level. Finnegan wasn't. I think the point about it being a 1 yr deal is pretty well known. I think people's issue is that the 1 year he is guaranteed to be in the team is paying him too much. Should have been a couple million on a prove it deal. Not 5.5 million guaranteed. Yes, I know it's not my money as some like to preach. Or that Miami isn't up against the cap but whatever money isn't used this year can be rolled over. You have to remain financially responsible

If Ireland had given out this contract he would have been buried for it

It's not $5.5, you're just splitting the total in two. He's only guaranteed $3.5 in the first season, period.

He got a $2Million signing bonus + $3.5Million guaranteed for 2014. That's $5.5 total.

Agreed, $-wise it's just not a great move and should have come cheaper. Who were we bidding against for him?

That said, I like Finnegan on the Fins overall, a risky move once in a while is good, but risks should be better handled than this.

I think the idea that he is a player and a leader has something to do with this signing.
Maybe he can kick Jones in the ass and help Taylor and Davis become good players.
The best thing that could come out of this is Taylor beating him out. If that happens, it was a good signing.

I like it because the guy sounds like he wants to be in Miami. He's basically got a one year deal like Grimes had last season. Now, we weren't sure how Grimes would play out coming off the injury. The same can be said about Finnegan with two sub-par seasons and injuries. I'm optimistic though. He's saying all the right things and sounds believable when doing so...

You all remember that Richard Sherman interview after the NFC Championship game. That kind of intensity hasn't been on the Dolphins team. I think the Finnegan signing is about trying to get some of that. If he can teach Will Davis how to play tough, be intense and finish, this could be a good signing.
