Putting Finnegan's Future Into Focus..................

He a Dolphin now and i hope he has a great year. Personally I would have used that money to resign Patterson who showed plenty when he was healthy.

people keep bringing up patterson, and then saying "when he's healthy". perhaps the team doctors looked at him, and they think his groin issue will be recurring?

Perhaps you are right and groin injuries are a bitch . Finnegan has had his health issues as well and i'm just saying Patterson has a bigger upside where as the new guy may have already seen his best days.
Hate to see Patterson sign somewhere else like the Jets who need CB's and go on to lead the league in INT's.

See....Patterson was truly injury prone, that would have been much riskier.

The point is...much of the Finnegan criticism is based on his play when he was injured and tried to play with blurred vision from the orbital injury....which is fixed now.

Also...remember that he got paid big time when he signed with the Rams...He might have lost a little edge...I see him now trying to prove himself again and I see it playing out nice for Miami.

I'm not against the Finnegan signing. If he reverts to his previous level of play that will be great and I do like his aggressive style of play just voicing an opinion.

I honestly think this is going to be the best FA signing for us the whole offseason when its said and done.

Too much Guaranteed $ with too much risk. Safer approach would have been to sign a very good RT like Collins and draft CB in first round. Lots of good CBs in first roud at 19. Gibert wmay have been there and would be lower cap risk also great return man. Now we have no RT and a risking CB with inexperienced backups.

We have two young second year players @ CB so drafting one at #19 would be questionable. IMO. Finnegan is not the future but I think he will compliment Grimes and might help save Philbin's butt this season.. He is a risk though..

how is that too much guaranteed money? is 5.5 when we still have immense cap space. When you sign a guy like this to a contract in FA he is gonna play the first year of his contract regardless. Not to mention Collins is a LT.

There is no chance Gilbert make it to 19. Even if Dennard starts to be viewed as the top corner in the draft there is Detroit who needs a corner, Pit that needs a corner, the jets possibly, minnisota could use an upgrade, and maybe even Dallas.

It's about developing your own players. Setting a tone in the locker room and changing an atmosphere is undervalued. Louis delmas and cortland are true LEADERS. They both play with an edge, and if it lights a fire under these players- it's worth it.

With that said, 5.5 mill was WAY too much for an under achieving player. Wish we had a coach like harbaugh ;) so we wouldnt have to pay crazy money to bad players.

It's too much because there was no indication anyone else was going to give him more than veteran minimum. If he is as bad this year as he has been for the past year and a half, we've completely wasted all of that money.

He had other visits planed so how do you know what other teams could have potentially offered? He has had a total of 1 bad year in his whole career and that was due to injury. I dont see this bad play trend that everyone else seems to see. Name one player in the secondary his first year in St.Louis. You put grimes in a defense with incompetent safeties when it comes to coverage and see how much success he had. The only other notable guy was Janoris Jenkins in his rookie year.

Finnagan was horrible in St Louis. we overpaid period but if somehow he reverts to form then it will be a good deal in the end.
I mean if we paid Hakken Nicks the same money many would say its a bad deal but no one can predict the future. Its about what the value is now and I didn't see any other team investing that much.
The good thing he is not the number one guy so he has a chance to improve this year.

I also hope he regains his form from a couple of years ago, but the money does seem kind of high for a player with his rating. I think I would rather have gone with the sophomores and maybe drafted another player.

Still don't see the risk so many keep harping about?...There is no risk past this season as no money has to impact next year's cap...One year flyer on a Pro Bowl corner coming back from injuries last season...His only real bad season when he played with an orbital eye injury which blurred his vision (Operated on and fixed).

There are no sure things in this league...but if regains his form it will be huge for this team...worse case scenario he helps mentor Jamar Taylor et al.....Well worth a one year flyer and some cap space we won't use anyway this year.
