Putting Finnegan's Future Into Focus..................

Perhaps you are right and groin injuries are a bitch . Finnegan has had his health issues as well and i'm just saying Patterson has a bigger upside where as the new guy may have already seen his best days.
Hate to see Patterson sign somewhere else like the Jets who need CB's and go on to lead the league in INT's.

to be fair, finnegan just turned 30, patterson will be 31 in june.

How much of Finnegan's struggles in 2012 could have been related to the fact that they didn't have an actual defensive coordinator? If memory serves they basically ran it by committee and that's rarely ever a formula for success. So not only was it a new scheme but the guy who's scheme it was wasn't even there since he was suspended for the year. Then last year he gets a new DC who's been fired after a year and he went through a myriad of injuries as well. Here he should come in healthy, hungry and will hopefully fit well into a scheme that's well established and proven to get the most out of veteran CBs. I love his aggressive nature and between he and Delmas their leadership and their desire to lay the wood should rub off on Jones and really make a difference with receivers wanting to come across the middle on us.

Still don't see the risk so many keep harping about?...There is no risk past this season as no money has to impact next year's cap...One year flyer on a Pro Bowl corner coming back from injuries last season...His only real bad season when he played with an orbital eye injury which blurred his vision (Operated on and fixed).

There are no sure things in this league...but if regains his form it will be huge for this team...worse case scenario he helps mentor Jamar Taylor et al.....Well worth a one year flyer and some cap space we won't use anyway this year.

Let's forget about last year with the injury, and go back to 2012. He did have 4 of 5 good games to start but, was below average the rest of the that year. He ranked #86 with PFF, and #70 with NFL. This and the money are problems for me.

I have to admit that I would not have cared as much on rolling the dice if not for the fact that the same money would have bought a good starter on the OL like an Asamoah, etc. IF we had done both, I would feel better on Finnegen.

They had the same coaches when he played well to start the season. If that had any effect, it would have been then. No?

They had as many as 4 different guys calling the D in 2012. Who knows who was calling what and when. If he had 4 good games to start the season then something must have changed for his play to have dropped off, right? I mean either he had an undisclosed injury or there was a scheme change or something.

5.5mil is CB2 money. so that's all he has to really play up to. if he plays better, fantastic!

Yep, he got average CB starting salary, and only 1 year guaranteed. When this guy isn't injured, and last year was the only significant injury he's had, he is at the very least an average CB.

I'm going with PFF here, who grades and ranks players from watching every play, and is on what an individual does in match ups. They had Finnegen at #2, behind only Revis, in 2011, and #86 in 2012. That says a lot.

In 2011 he was playing for the Titans in a scheme he was comfortable with and with an actual D-coordinator. In 2012 he was playing for a new team under a new scheme with no D-Coordinator. That says a lot. I have no problem with PFF's grades but SOMETHING changed after the 4th game, unless you honestly believe his skill level just went from the #2 CB in the league in 2011-game 4 of 2012 to flat out awful in game 5 of 2012.

I have no idea of what, if anything happened but. we've all seen this before. Clabo was the polar opposite in being horrible for 5 games, and then VG in the last 9 games. Go figure.

If anything, even if we suck this year, we ll see our fair share of big hits from this Dolphins D...

Finnegan at the line, disrupts routes and timing which is key as a #2 cb. With a pass rush of Vernon ,Wake and Jordan. The clock in the qbs head is already ticking faster than normal .which means delays in routes by wide outs that know Delmas and Jones are waiting to light them up even if they do catch the ball. It is a huge advantage for the Fins. Also having 2 former pro bowl professionals at cb,is the best way for us to ever teach our 2nd yr cbs how to be successful I n the NFL.

how is that too much guaranteed money? is 5.5 when we still have immense cap space. When you sign a guy like this to a contract in FA he is gonna play the first year of his contract regardless. Not to mention Collins is a LT.

There is no chance Gilbert make it to 19. Even if Dennard starts to be viewed as the top corner in the draft there is Detroit who needs a corner, Pit that needs a corner, the jets possibly, minnisota could use an upgrade, and maybe even Dallas.

Maybe so , but just like us , all those teams need players at other possions , im pretty sure they have Bigger need at a diffrent possion than CB , dallas drafted a CB last year , and lost a DE in ware , and Minny needs a QB worse than a CB , as of right now the jests need a QB worse than they need a CB , so its just what they think will be better fit , but icant see a CB throwing the football for them this year.....
