QB/QB Which one?

Does anyone here think that what Saban may be doing is giving Gus the start until the bye week in wk 4. Maybe his thinking is Gus knows what everyone is supposed to be doing on every play and he can be sort of a tutor on the field for our team. After the bye everyone should be up to snuff and we'll probably be 0-3. At that point he gives it to AJ.

I personally don't think that's what he's doing but the thought has crossed my mind. The truth is when it comes to the OL and QB positions I dont know what he's doing, I'm just praying that he knows what he's doing

while I'm of the opinion that AJ should start the season opener....it just seems to me that Saban has already made up his mind to start Gus for the season opener...even though he's not "literally" saying that it's Gus.

Personally, I hope AJ plays great and makes Saban rethink things. However, I feel that nearly all the starters on offense, and most on the defense, are going to play into about the middle of the 3rd quarter. Keeping that in mind, AJ will get between a quarter and a quarter and a half to do something with the backups. I don't see how him doing anything special will make a difference unless Gus flat out stinks it up during his 2 1/2 quarters of play.

Basically I think it's come down to Gus losing the starting job now instead of AJ winning it.

hopefully that helps to answer your question. :)

Good answer....

IMO,

It will be Gus, Why? One less position for Saban to worry about while the rest of the offense tries to execute this vertical stretch offense. Kinda like Warner-Manning in NY. As soon a Saban is cormforable with Feeley as the QB, then we'll see a change. In the meantime, I'll take any win the Phins get.

Thats a good reference point..hadnt thought of that one. It actually makes alot of sense..bring AJ up to speed slowly..and then make a change, unless of course Gus is tearing it up. Great Point!

Said it before and continue to say it, its crazy as evenly matched as they are NOT to start Feeley and let him play and see if he can come through this year or not.And if not, you find another QB somewhere, because Gus is'nt the long term answer either.Any way you look at it, Feeley deserves the chance to see if he can get it together this year.

Saban talks about how the offensive line doesnt and havent protected the QB this year and its hard to judge them because of it, well, it (the offensive line) was even worse last year, and the QB's were really getting slaughtered then. Some of you can say he's a Feeley fan if you like, I could care less.I'm a Dolphin fan who knows football and have followed the Dolphins every year since 1970, and I know, and have said since last year what Nick said, the QB nor the RB's are going to do anything if the offensive line doesnt do their job, and that as Paul Harvey would say, "Is the rest of the story !"

Im very much in agreement..but I can see the Guskateer's point of view...even if it doesnt suit me well. Last years performance was a pass. The head coaching sucked..the OC sucked..the line coach sucked. No way in hell can you base anything with AJ during the dark ages. AJ improved much after Bates came along. He did...you AJ haters..look it up if you dont believe me. I think Gus may be the starter until AJ learns the offense..and then I think we'll see a switch.

Gus has a firm grasp on the starting job. Unless he goes 5/15 with 2 picks, I think he has it in the bag, unfortunatlly.

I would argue with the "firm grip" statement. I wouldnt be suprised if you were right..at least for the start of the year..but IMO..we will see a transition to Feeley. Saban knows we need to find out if he can play. And honestly...we havent seen that yet. Last year was a wash. Even most pre season Pro Football writers exclaimed the same. I like the comparison made a few posts back about the Warner/Manning model. It makes sense and it could very well happen. AJ haters..no need to explain why you disagree..I have heard all the arguments. AJ will be our starter at some point.

I believe this is the truest statement in the thread. Let us hope AJ will be ready.

No QB has ever started the first year that they were in Linehan's system. This is why Gus qas brought in. They're going to Let Feeley learn the system and then see if he can pan out.

If Gus blows tonight and AJ does very well, I envision the job being AJ's opening day. Next week will not be used to decide the QB competition.

That said, if Gus does blow, I would expect that AJ will be crippled by the playcalling to keep him from doing very well. I think it's very possible that happened last week, too.

Linehan's first NFL OC job was with the Vikings...and didnt Culpeppar start for him? I do agree that they will let Feeley learn the system and then make the change.

i have been convinced (by other finheaven members with good arguments) that we SHOULD start AJ regardless of how Gus does tonight.

Gus is nearing retirement, and won't lead this team anywhere short-term other than to deny us a high pick in a draft or not let us know for sure what we have in feeley. I am a hardcore feeley critic, but this is a completely new system from last year, new coaches, RBs, and offensive coordinators. We need to see how he does in this system to make sure he is a flop. Why play Gus? He is 35 and even if he is great, he won't be playing but for another year or two.

I don't know.. i've just been convinced that we're not going to have a good year, so might as well use it to evaluate our talent and not tell us something we don't already know.

Gus isn't that close to retirement. In fact, he'd be an outstanding person to mentor a younger QB (Brees? Rivers? who knows?) in the system. What I hope for out of Gus starting is him getting the rest of the offense on one page so the new QB next year is the only guy who really has to do learning. It is really my fear that Feeley is incapable of making this happen should he be the one to start. I don't have that strong a feeling about the issue because I understand that there is a reward possibility with Feeley starting. That is probably why I haven't been very vocal about the situation.

Very good point, I totally agree with you.

Very logical viewpoint JimmyJ...

Guys..for the most part I think the responses have been very good. Good arguments from both sides of the battle. Thanks for keeping this a classy thread!!!

Especially since many like this have deteriated into mindless blather.
