Disclaimer: I classify myself as a moderate Tannehill believer, but like most of you I am not sold yet. And this comparison is in now way me saying both careers will be the same.

Living in NJ and not being able to watch Dolphins games regularly (until I turned 21), I was forced to watch a LOT of Giants games and to be honest Tannehill truly reminds me of Eli Manning. And the difference is in many way Tannehill looks better.

Why: Through their first two years, both quarterbacks made throws that very few quarterbacks could make, but at times made decisions that had you screaming. Both qb's were good for at least one td pass a game and a few great drives, but also a few very bad ones. Both lacked consistency on throws and both seem to be taking to the leadership role at around the same pace. We all judge Eli based on his clutch abilities, and ability to win, but it took him awhile to get there (Only 5 game winning drives in his first 3 years) Tanne has 2 so far.

Differences:
1. Tannehill is obviously much more athletic, but doesn't run much anyway.
2. Eli went 11-5 in his 2nd season, but he also had an ELITE offensive line and a rb rush for 1860 yards and 540 receiving yards. (and then went 8-8 next year so it wasn't win from jump).

What Tannehill has done better: Again guarantee anything
1. Completion %: Eli completed 52.8 while Ryan is at 61.8: This is influenced by having a west coast offense as the Giants do not. But it surely is not the only reason.
2. Running and mobility in pocket. His mobility (with a good o-line hopefully) is similar to manning in the sense that yes, he is awkwardly slow but not easy to sack (oddly).

2nd Year numbers:

Eli Manning: 3762 yards 24tds 17ints 52.8com% qbrate: 75.9 (yards are less because when he handed the ball off, his rb actually gained yards)
Ryan (Projected): 4049 yards 22tds 17ints 61.8com% qbrate: 82

some food for thought.

I'm not a Tannehill lover, but I've thought about Eli myself. Both are/were late bloomers. Both seem more fragile/finesse than your average QB. Both have similar attributes. What I'm hoping is that Tannehill keeps developing, and turns into a franchise QB, so we don't have to draft another. (But even still, if there is a slam-dunk QB available in the next couple of drafts, I have no problem trading up for him).

The thing is, about our recent loss, is that I personally thought Tannehill had a good game, and made some awesome throws, and showed much better pocket awareness than the last few games, despite my criticism of the off-target throws and incomplete passes. The reason many of us are raising the bar so high on this game, is because the primary excuse for his sub-par performances has been the O line. IMO that was not a factor in this game in terms of protection. So now,...what is expected is completed passes and first downs, and touchdowns. That's the expectation.

People also forget that Tannehill only has a year and some months under center as a QB in college, Eli was a starter his whole college career. He's already shown me enough to believe in him with that limited experience. Heres hoping he gets better and better and prove the doubters wrong.

As it stand right now something drastic needs to happen for me to want to trade up to draft another qb

Good comparison OP. One other tidbit, Eli has stayed healthy despite a beating and Tannehill is showing similar toughness.

I also live in NJ. I watch every phin game and just about every giant game cuz I go to my buddys house who has 3 games on at once. I dont see the Eli comparison at all. Not even the slightest.

If anything, Ryan is more Romo then Eli, but without the choke ability that Romo has.

btw... What part of NJ?

Eli was always really good in late game spots, Ryan has been good at times but not as good as Eli. Ryan reminds me of a more athletic Bledsoe.

Eli? If Tanney kills it in the cold weather, in big games at the end of the year ....

Not seeing it...he doesn't throw the ball into coverage like Eli does sometimes...

I don't see it either. I'm still hoping he'll continue to improve. I believe he is doing most things better this year other than the long ball. If he ever gets that going thenhe'll be a top QB. If he doesn't improve then he'll just be average.

Ozzy rules!!

It's frustrating cause he makes great reads but he doesn't hit the big play opportunities when he does everything else right down the field...he's got to hit more of those...

I wish this team would just go full no huddle and give the reigns to the qb...it's time...we aren't gonna score 30 points with no run game suspect pass pro in passing downs unless we take off the training wheels...

I will bet anyone here money that next year we are no huddle from the get...if Sherman returns...I would not be huddling up next year

Beat people with tempo and inability to sub out

i expect eli to come through in the clutch, he did it in college and has been pretty clutch as a pro. tannehill has never been clutch, not in college and certainly not here. he reminds me of a slightly better chad henne. he doesnt check down as often but eventually in the end he does exactly what henne did- put the pressure of winning the game squarely on the defenses shoulders.

I could see Romo as well...Romo was more apt to put up gaudy #'s than tannehill and eli....and Ocean County btw

Eli is constantly looking for the big play, loves to take shot after shot downfield. Eli also works the seam and deep middle like a madman, which Tannehill hardly ever does.

Tannehill reminds me more of Alex Smith. Good pre-snap, quick reads that he almost always takes, sharp on perimeter throws, shows good touch when necessary, pretty safe with the football in the redzone, struggles to create big plays, all the tools to make all the throws, athletic enough to beat you with his legs on a play or two.

Being sacked at a record pace, and still standing strong in the pocket. Shows his game is not based on being a finesse or fragile QB.

You and many others really need to not discount the beating he has taken this year. Other QB's who have had great careers in college, and ended up in the NFL, have been unable to withstand a beating from NFL DE/LBs. David Carr comes to mind.

Tannehill is making the best of a terrible situation. He is on pace to being sacked at record levels. Expectations should be tempered for a player who has no running game to lean on.

I've seen enough growth from the young man, to give him another year before I start raising my expectations.
