So you are saying Mora and McKay drafted Shaub with the plans that he be a career backup? Hmmm,..... wasted pick even if he is a good backup.

Probably more like 3-4 year backup with Schaub becoming a restricted free agent in 2007 and un-restricted free agent in 2008. Like Schaub, but never believed this was a good 1rst day pick for Atlanta last year even with Ron Mexico's injury history. But don't think pick can be considered "wasted" until we see Schaub perform when Vick gets hurt. Will he outperform his 3rd round status and get the Falcons back higher/more picks or nothing?

I am not saying it was a wasted pick. I am saying he wasnt drafted for teh sole purpose of being a career backup. I am saying it is a wasted pick if that was their intent when they drafted him.

OK, I'm wrong. :shakeno: So are the other people in this thread that vote overwhelmingly that I, along with them, are right. It's funny - if this same thread would have been made and said about an offensive guard or defensive tackle, you would probably agree.

No I wouldnt. Ignorance says that a team would draft ANY player at ANY position with the sole hope that he never has to play. Because that is what a backup is, a backup to a starter. Teams want their starters on the field, so it is the truth that teams dont want their backups to have to play because that means the better player isnt. So if you draft a player and say I only drafted him so he could be a backup, you are saying you dont want that player to play. That is just erroneous thinking. And yes the poll is in your favor, so? Does it make it right? Nope. It is misleading as well. Why dont you ask the question do teams draft a player with the sole intention that they be career backups? What response would you get then?

Noone said that the coaches would hope that he never had to play. That's just dumb. ANd it also proves that people will throw words and phrases out there just to make their point look valid. Of course they will see the field. DTs get rotated, LBs get rotated...alot of players who are backups are also on special teams. But that doesn't mean that these players aren't drafted for the sole purpose of depth. QBs all the way to safeties. Players are drafted to add depth to a team. PERIOD. They are coached to be as good as possible so if the situation presents itself for them to play, then he will be ready. BUt when it's draft time, that player was drafted to be depth. That includes QBs.

I'm baaaaaaaaack. :D

Good post, ror, I'm guessing the response wouldn't be anywhere near the same........

Players get drafted as back-ups but, no player is ever drafted to be a career back-up. Simple as that. There is no argument.

Yes, a player is drafted to add depth to a position but, that is only for their first fews and twos, then they are intended to be starters, every single one of them.....and the closer you can get to making that a reality the better you are at drafting.

If somebody drafts for career back-ups in the same league that I'm drafting in,I'm not going t give that team a second thought on my compettition radar because I know that their thinking is fundamentally flawed.
I'm drafting for guys that will play back-up until they develop into starters, just like every team in the NFL......

Guess we'll have to wait until 2007-2008 before Schaub becomes a free agent to find out if Atlanta signs him to be the #1 QB and moves Vick. Or 2008-2009 to find out if the Colts decide to keep Jim Sorgi or Peyton Manning. You think Sorgi & Schaub were drafted by those 2 franchises with the expectation of developing and starting over Vick & Peyton in 2-3 years? I disagree and believe they were drafted to be cheap backups for those teams. As Matt Hasselbeck was drafted to be Favre's backup, AJ Feeley was drafted to be McNabb's backup, Dave Ragone was drafted to be be Carr's backup, and Rohan Davey/Matt Cassel were drafted to be Brady's backups.
