That was his first goaline fumble. After that it happened every week.

Dont you just miss the good old days!

yea, unfortunately sammie didn't have the mental toughness to get past that game. wasn't long after that that we traded him to denver straight up for bobby humphry...one headcase for another. :shakeno:

He was a 4th round draft pick who wasn't really consistent. He wasn't that good. All backs have good games every now and then. he left Miami and signed with Kansas City after spending 4 or 5 seasons with Miami. I think he played for the Rams too.

He had all the promise to be excellent and tore his knee up. After that he was never the same.

His nick was the slasher.

He wasn't a dominating RB. Not the type that could win you games or wear a defense down. His best season rushing was just over 600 yards if I'm not mistaking. He was a good reciever and a decent all around back. But he never would have been the RB Miami needed to give them a truly balanced attack. He also fumbled alot.

Stratford turned out just okay...not lasting long. Don't recall alot of talent in those drafts as far as running back?.... Does anyone....??
At least we got something out of him
All the crappy backs we've had sure make me appreciate Ricky in that fins uniform even more!

Seems like Stradford made his most consistent impact on special teams, if my memory serves me.

He did fumble a lot, that was his biggest problem, along with getting hurt. Being undersized, and a slasher meant for a short career.

Like I said though, he had all the talent in the world to be excellent. Miami never had a good run blocking offensive line, especially in the years of Marino's prime. If they did, things could have been a lot different for him because once he got past the LOS he was hard to catch. Dude could cut on a dime, and had great burst. It was a good thing he could catch, and return punts because he only had over 100 rushing attemts once in his career.

Troy Stradfrod was my all time favorite Dolphins RB. He was a great player for us in his first couple years, and its a shame he got hurt so early in his career. Moreover, he's a great person. His game vs Dallas was one of the most dominate performances in Dolphins history.

Stradford was the offensive rookie of the year in 1987. He ran for 619 yards on 145 carries and 6 touchdowns while catching 48 passes for 457 yards and 1 touchdown. His rushing numbers dropped in year two to 335 yards on 75 carries, but he caught 56 passes for 426 yards.

He was a very good receiver who wasn't durable enough to take the pounding of being an everydown runner.

I loved Troy. His jersey was the only players jersey I have ever bought.

First of all, I know this wasn't that long ago but I'm only 17 years old and wasn't born at the time. Hopefully I don't offend any of you "older fans" aka 25+ years old.
I was just watching an old Dolphins-Cowboys game in which Troy Stradford, a rookie running back from Boston college, absolutely dominated the 'Boys defense with over 200 yards from scrimmage. As far back as I can remember, I've heard about the Dolphins' lack of a running game during Dan's tenure, so it got me wondering... what happened to this guy?
I actually have this game on TAPE...believe it or not....at the end of the game Stratford ran a sweep left....for about 35 yards...25 of it backwards....awesome game. Stratford was in the same mold as Mark Higgs...Higgy had a few memorable games as well.

yea, right after he we got him. shot in the thigh above the knee i believe. he wasn't the same after that. ironic...i remember thinking that now we had a RB that could produce. just seemed like the 'Phins were never able to get a good RB while Danny played...

Sammie "fumble at the goaline" Smith. I still can remember that game against the Oilers where Lamar Lathon hit Sammie at the 1 yd line and caused a fumble that Chris Dishman recovered.

Ah the memories!!

I remember too. My seats were in sec 122, second row. Right near the goal line. Saw the play evolving. I was not one the many fans chanting "Sammy sucks" that day.
