  • I know it's versus other backups and guys who are fighting to even make the team, but Quinton Spears LOLB (#48) looks good. In almost every play he showed something positive.

  • The kid constantly sheds his block, has a sweet inside or outside shed move, showed a good bull-rush, looks decent in coverage, has a nice burst, and appears to play smart.

  • In one play, he didn't over-commit and kept containment on a QB bootleg. In another play, on a stunt to the inside, he ran over the RG lol. In another play, his outside pass rush led to the INT. Out of all his snaps, only one was a negative one where he got pushed back on a goaline run.

  • Obviously he'll need to show this against better competition but I like what I'm seeing. We probably wont see him in the 3rd preseason game since mostly starters and backups will play. The 4th preseason game will be his time to really show if he's gotten something worth keeping.
Update: Spears looked good again in his 4th preseason game. Didn't catch the 3rd preseason but he probably didn't get a chance to play. Looks like a nice defensive project. Stash him away!
 
I didn't notice him much in the Atlanta game, but he looked better against the 3rd string tackle than Trusnik did against the second string against Carolina. Not sure how terrible that RT was though. I was impressed he seemed to have a pretty good speed rush.
 
Yes. He looked awesome. I've read where he was doing this in practice too. Maybe another pass rushing specialist Ireland found us.

Spears looked really good, but given the silence on him lately I think the best he can hope for is practice squad. I like his size and quickenss. Not doubt he has potential.
 
It wasn't just the 4th quarter I think it was only like 2 or 3 plays that Spears played in the game...but yeah on those 2 or 3 plays he did look pretty unblockable by that Right Tackle, whoever he is...has a great future as a grocery bagger at Sweetbay I'm sure.

Spears though, it's enough to want to see more, for sure.
 
Spears is almost like a poor mans Jason Taylor when JT came out in the draft. Has a similar build and gets off the ball quickly. Spears measured 6'5" 240 at his pro day workout. Maybe he needs to add some bulk but I think he's a guy we should try to keep on the practice squad.
 
It'd be nice to see him get a couple pass rushes against some 1st team guys in the next pre-season game.
 
I dunno if I'd count on it. This 3rd preseason game is the one you're supposed to treat like a real game. It'll probably be starters and primary backups all the way through the 3rd quarter and maybe into the 4th quarter. Spears is still down the depth chart for whatever reason. I agree that he's shown plenty to want to see more but I don't think it'll be against the Bucs. His time will be in the 4th preseason game.

Thanks CK, he has been flashing at me when watching the games..but since he was clearly playing backups to the backups, I really wasn't sure..but the guy has speed and can seem to cover too.
