Rapoport on NFL AM: Philbin appears to be safe but some other changes maybe made

Wonderful. Two years ago we limit our coaching search by force feeding candidates Ireland. Now we'll limit our GM search by force feeding candidates Philbin. Makes total sense.

Panthers last year kept Rivera whose team had a lot of talent like us

where the hell is all this talent people keep talking about? talent makes plays. who made a play the last 2 weeks? 2 people made plays for us the past month and one of them was a 49ers practice squad player.

Boggles the mind, doesn't it?

Never gonna get a quality GM if your owner forces a coach on him.

Let the new GM decide if they want to keep Philbin or not.

What about the coaches where the owner forced a GM on them? Remember that Philbin was Ross' pick, not Ireland's.

In recent years we have seen some HC's hire their own GMs. The Seahawks, Rams, Chiefs, and Patriots come to mind. We don't necessarily need the traditional authoritarian style GM who will come in and blow up the franchise top to bottom. There are many GMs out there who do not have the "final say" on personnel, or at least have a dynamic relationship with the HC, and they seem to work just fine. We can keep Philbin on to coach the team while we hire or promote someone who is responsible for evaluating players, without having their duties overlap.

You can't chose to keep Philbin if you hire a New GM, Mr.Ross. If that GM choses to retain Philbin then fine. But you gotta say, hey I'm hiring you Mr.New GM do what's necessary.

the problem I have with philbin is he doesnt seem to have the personality to be a head coach...the only coach that I have ever seen that could be as quiet as joe is and still be a real leader was dungy...maybe im wrong, but unless its dungy out there I want fiery, I want the personality of sporano with someone that actually plays modern football...

Dungy had Peyton. A ham sandwich could look good with Peyton on the team.

Because our defense BLOWS...the offense WAS bad,but at least, they had some excuses....The D?They just blow.

The defense can definitely get better, but it is ludicrous to say our defense blows. The offense is the main problem.

Why do people keep saying the defense collapsed? The O again scored less than 20 points per game. Only 7 points in the last two games. We still cannot score. If we score 21 points during the last two games, we win. This team still cannot score 3 touchdowns per game.

Oh, the offense played like absolute ****, but that doesn't negate the fact that the defense gave up 19 and 20 points to a 3rd stringer (without his #1 WR) and a godawful rookie.

DING DING DING DING

We really only need a Director of Pro Personnel. Someone who knows TALENT in the league and coming into the league. Let him procure players in concert with Philbin.

Let the office people fiddle around with cap and contracts... In other words, minimize the GM role in personnel. Shula had 2 people in Thomas and Beathard... that had the effect of preventing either from becoming a king over the whole franchise.

There really isn't any one true way to run an organization. Different structures and styles have worked over time. I'm not worried about losing anyone at this point, whatever group of people that can get it done works for me.

I disagree with the thought that Miami can't lure a good GM here if they retain Philbin. If you listen to people around the league, Philbin gained A Ton of respect in league circles with how he kept this team competitive during all of the distractions this year. He is highly regarded by many people in the league.

We need continuity, and I believe retaining Joe would be a solid move. However, Ireland and Sherman MUST go and it's not even up for debate IMO. With Chud being fired in Cleveland, Norv Turner will be available as an OC. Instant upgrade over Sherman. Then, bring in a GM who will make resigning Grimes and upgrading the OL his top priorities.

I don't want Norv Turner scrubbing the toilets at the stadium. The guy has failed at every possible avenue, I don't see why people have such a man crush on him.

All I have to say is if Ireland gets fired and a new GM comes in, goodbye Philbin. So man up Ross and fire these bums.

All because Ross 'really likes' Philbin and because Philbin is 'his guy' and 'his hire'. I hate not being the owner of this ****ing team, half this board would do a better job than Ross. Ross should stick with ****ing real estate, something he is obviously brilliant at. Get out of the football business.

The guy has some serious dirt an multiple people in the NFL. That's all I can think of, because he's a ****ing horrible coach. People think we choked bad with Sherman, but Turner is the master choke artist.
