He sais something very true that has to do with our current team. He said he wanted to draft guys that are on the heels of the starters, and draft guys on the heels of those guys. Always pushing.
So I instantly thought of Wallace and Tannehill. Wallace has a visible look of "I'm number one, and my pay reflects it." He nneds to be pushed hard to make those tough catches and leap for the ball. Right now, he has no fear of replacement.
Tannehill knows he's the man at QB. I can't stand this. For the past 2 seasons and this current off season it's all "I'm coming in early, working hard, and staying late." Well that's fine but we are still 8-8 with a QB -who I like-that can't escape a collapsing pocket with his WR speed and agility. He needs competition too.
An example should be set if this team is serious in camp competition this year. We want guys biting at the heels of the starters. We want urgency in their play. I don't want anyone feeling safe. Thoughts?

The problem with Wallace is he still gets the huge paycheck regardless of who is pushing him. No player should ever feel safe but in his case he knows his salary, for now, has him locked in.

The Wallace comment I get, but the Tannehill comment doesn't make any sense. Tannehill isn't getting "paid" like Wallace and he is putting in the time, coming in early working hard etc.. Last time I checked it was a 53 man team and the 8-8 record isn't a total reflection of of Tannehill. I am still amazed the dude threw for almost 4,000 yards and 24 TDs while playing behind the worst offenseive line in football, with one of the worst rushing offenses in the league. Tannehill also knows that he has to play better, especially this year and next or he won't get PAID. The last thing we need is to waste money on another QB to "push" Tannehill.

Again, the Wallace thing I get, the Tannehill comment I don't.

My point abt an example. We want to win, not pad Wallace's pockets. If he is outperformed then make him a number 2. The team will get the hint and PUSH into the playoffs.

I'm not sure if I'm following you. So are you saying the Dolphins should have drafted a QB, say Manziel, to compete with Tannehill? That's fine in theory I suppose, but it also means continuing to have a hole at RT if you're of the belief that James is a legitimate RT and wouldn't have been available in the second round (we'll see about the former, we'll never know about the later). Are you saying that the Dolphins should have signed a free agent QB like Vick or Schaub to compete with Tannehill? The problem with that is that virtually every QB that hits free agency was not good enough to play on the team that let him go.

The Dolphins also drafted two receivers, both of whom, in theory anyway, will be "pushing" Wallace to play better. I would imagine that if Wallace plays like garbage, he'll less playing time if there's someone better than him, or at least I'd hope so.

Bottom line, you can't really take the platitudes that GMs, coaches or owners throw out there about team philosophy. Is any GM going to tell you that he wants his players to not be challenged, that they don't want a professional team culture, that they didn't draft the best player available?

Not just wasting money but a roster spot and a draft pick on a team full of holes. Last I checked you can only play one QB at a time.

Here's a concept...how about setting up the QB to succeed rather than to fail like we've done the last two years thanks to Ireland. Anyone notice how the teams that drafted QBs also drafted WRs or other offensive weapons to set their new QBs up for success? What did Tannehill have his rookie season? Brian Hartline, a 4th round pick, and 4 undrafted free agents. His second year he had no offensive line even though we lost Long early in free agency Ireland had no contingency plan.

Bull****

We lack starters nevermind people behind then

And damn right tannehill knows he is the guy.

Zach, you aren't a newbie..You should know anything other than saying Tannehill is great and making excuses for anymistakes he makes is blasphemy around here!!

Tannyhill competition is Bill Lazor and his new offense.

Yes, you have your opinion, I just happen to think he could have ran better. By design or not. Almost all of us can agree on that. Why draft a highly mobile qb to sit in the pocket and get crushed?

[Incoming homerism, I apologize]
I don't really see either as truly underperforming, at all. Both guys are doing what they can. They've made some mistakes last season, sure, but they've done a lot for this team, more than some other players have. Hartline, Clay, and Gibson's #'s have a lot of benefit from Wallace's presence.
I place a lot of blame on coaching for last season (and Ireland for not realizing Wallace isn't really the best fit). Lazor could make it work, let's see.

I like the additional WR's we picked up. Tannehill's also well-aware that this is his make-or-break season, you can tell from his interviews how much importance he places on this season.

Mettenberger.

Yeah, trading out of 2 potential franchise receivers to drop back and take a good CB but one on some drafts that still ranked 3 or 4 out of a bunch of good ones despite knowing for the last 2weeks he'd be without two receivers and then using one of those picks to trade up to 22 (in the proud Cleveland tradition of Weeden and Quinn) to draft a QB with character concerns (as RG3 has demonstrated) is only as good against college competition as his legs were healthy (quite likely acceding to his crooked possibly soon to be indicted owner to sell seats and jerseys). And stilll throughout the draft with a great 2nd tier of receivers, still not drafting any to fill the void in the middle rounds. But I guess that fits with his philosophy cuz there's no way you should draft receivers to push the one or two worth a damn who aren't on the field, eh? IMO he could have been making these decisions for us, so we dodged a major bullet. I'll admit I didn't want Hickey, but I sure as hell didn't want Farmer either!

Tannehill is not a football god. More people here want to take what I said as a dis on Tanny. My point was to say that he, and others, need to feel some heat to step up play. Tanny is not a seasoned vet like Brady or Manning who can expect every year to come in and start. I think Tanny has the ability to push himself, but there's nothing like a new name, possibly a Mettenberger to come in hungry to challenge all QB's for a spot. Like a Kirk Cousins, Nick Foles. Make Tanny step it up.

So what area do you ignore in the draft in order to draft this QB to challenge Tannehill?
