Ray Farmer the next Ozzie Newsome?

I read on here last week that while Farmer was instrumental in helping build the KC roster over many years, he is very religious and consciously tries to find players who are similarly committed Christians. I don't know if it is true, but I can see that being a problem for some. Many would prefer to not see religion used as a possible tool in player selection. However, it should also be noted that King Carl Peterson is coordinating and advising Stephen Ross on the GM recruitment. Farmer progressively moved up the KC Chiefs organization under King Carl.

Was peterson a good gm? It was before my time, I have seen him linked to ross for years and wondered if he was good or just meh

Others can answer this better than me, but overall the Kansas City team struggled for many of his years in power. So you would have to conclude that he was not good. However, because he has an intimate level of knowledge about what the role entails, I am supportive of him using his knowledge to help as an advisor to Ross at this time.

Peterson was a GM for the KC Chiefs for 20 seasons. While the Chiefs never went to the Super Bowl under Peterson, they were the winningest franchise of the 1990s.

The one thing Peterson never did as a GM was to draft a QB the team could develop.

Most people only remember Peterson's last four years in KC when he brought in Herm Edwards to be head coach and that is why they think he sucked as a GM.

This is not accurate. Prior to Peterson arriving in Kansas City, the Chiefs went to the playoffs only once since 1972. After Peterson's arrival in 1989, the Chiefs went to the playoffs nine times and had winning season in 13 of those seasons. It's the last four years in KC with Herm Edwards as head coach that the Chiefs struggled under Peterson.

Peterson actually never drafted a first round QB, IIRC. I think the last first round QB the Chiefs drafted was Todd Blackledge. In 1983?

Peterson never drafted a QB but did bring in Montana, Gannon, and Trent Green. It's not like he didn't make moves to answer the question.

Interesting that you bring up Gannon and Green. Green was actually a pretty good quarterback and Gannon was a damn good quarterback once he finally got into an offense that suited him. He was cruddy under Marty running the Marty Ball offense, but really flourished immediately under Gruden even though the Raiders did not exactly have a great supporting cast around him in year one.

Cote is horrible but he's just following in the fine tradition of such brilliant Miami sports media personalities as Edwin "Let's run Shula out of town" Pope and Larry "Let me just pass off a bunch of fraudulent checks and skip town because I'm a degenerate who can't stop borrowing money to bet on losing horses" King.

Edwin Pope also wrote some stinkers, I'll never forget his Retain Sparano column in 2011.
