Report: Dolphins knew of Davone Bess' problems before trade

Folks, so naive of you guys laughing it up that Miami got over on the Browns for essential exchanging picks in the draft. The next time Miami wants to make a move the other team will skeptical of the Fins motives. Operate in good faith.

I am shocked at how I am the polar opposite of fans here. Maybe I pay attention to how the great organizations of the NFL operate.

You take everything for face value. Is there proof Miami knew Bess was possibly a lunatic?

Good question…if they did not know he was crazy and losing it…I have more of an issue with the Fins.

Ireland is gone, we got a fresh clean slate when it comes to that aspect.

I hope so. Ray Farmer could do that. He is a quality man.

Seeing as Ireland is gone(the man who made the trade) why would any team be afraid of the team's motives in future trades?

Was it a dick move? Yes. So?

Ireland was fighting for his job and wanted ever pick he couls get. I would have done the same. Id rather have a worse rep and live to fight another day than be fired

Poor reflection on Ireland.

I agree. This guy needed help. Doesn't matter your profession. This was a bad decision from a bad person hell bent on his own agenda. Terrible thing to do. How pathetic it is to see a guy suffering from obvious issues then pawning him off on someone else just to try to help yourself. Being in the Army, we are asked, repeatedly, to identify individuals who need help AND GET THEM HELP. Not turn them away or push them off on someone else. I wasn't as hard on Ireland as some others were (although I was by no means a fan) but this is seriously pathetic. This is a person who obviously needs help. How can you not acknowledge it? Sad. Really sad.

If they knew he was damaged goods, just cut him. Don't try to get a pick out of a team. Terrible.

Once again, I totally agree. There was no integrity in play here.

The Miami Herald is reporting that the Dolphins didn’t offer the Cleveland Browns any information on wide receiver Davone Bess’ behavior problems before they traded him to the Cleveland Browns last April.
“Less than one month before shipping Bess out, the Dolphins learned Bess’s family had him ‘Marchman Acted ‘so he could be evaluated and receive treatment for the emotional or psychological issues that seemed to be troubling him,” reports the Miami Herald’s Armando Salguero. “While the Dolphins knew Bess was troubled, sources confirm they took a don’t-ask-don’t-tell approach on the matter when shopping and trading Bess.”

When you go to the car dealership you buy a Carfax report to make sure you are not buying a lemon. This is not our problem.

As a person, not as a businessman. Would of liked to see Ireland/Dolphins get him help. Maybe they tried who knows.

Disagree. Whatever we got for Bess(didnt we simply move up a few spots in the 5th round?) was not worth the potential damage to our reputation. Teams are fully aware of which regimes deal in good faith and which dont. They know who they should make deals with.

An example would be: when St. Louis was trading the 2nd overall pick, they let all the interested teams know it would be a silent auction. They set a deadline and told any team that had expressed interest to make their best offer before it. The Redskins had decided to send 3 first rounders, but at the last minute they got worried they would be outbid, so they added in an extra 2nd. The Browns simply offered 3 first rounders. After the deadline they informed everyone that they were going to deal the pick to the Redskins.
Panicking, Mike Holmgren quickly fired off an offer that was greater then the deal they had just agreed to. Les Snead refused, said it was done. Infuriated Holmgren went to the press and beat him up over it(the press interviews were on ESPN if your really interested in digging them up).

The Rams could have gotten an even bigger haul for(essentially) RG3. They didnt because they didnt want to ruin their reputation. They knew the long term value of dealing fairly, despite the short term gain of multiple high round draft picks. Ireland was apparently willing to piss away our reputation to move up a few spots towards the end of the draft. Thats being poor at his job.

While I agree that is it on Cleveland to do better research, it does seem lie it was a trend under Ireland to handle dealing this way….

2 different ways this is being looked at here.. Ireland should help the guy not pawn him.. ok I agree, but what is Ireland going to do for the guy? His family had him hospitalized. Ireland is fighting for his job and the organization. Bess was our #2 WR the season before. What should Ireland have done? Cut him and say good luck? How is that different than trading him? If anything he kept him with a job and his current contract.

We all thought something was fishy and the Browns just said, oh ok that sounds great lets do that.. No one knew the lingering effects or how serious the situation would turn out to be. Ireland is gone, he was a dick, let it go.

Do you think there is still some stink in the organization that will be left? Plus, perception is reality. If the other teams think the Fins still play dirty pool, then that is the reality.

For someone that loves the Fins as much as you do, I am surprised you do not demand that they conduct themselves better.

Are we talking facts here or are we just speculating again? Do we know what Ireland told Cleveland? Is Cleveland complaining about the trade? Is the personal health information of Bess allowed to be shared if it is not football related?

Or are we just taking this article and making it more than it is?
