Clemons really wasn't an upgrade over Gibril Wilson at all by any reasonable measure.
Clemons really wasn't an upgrade over Gibril Wilson at all by any reasonable measure. He had less tackles than Wilson, one more missed tackle than Wilson, one more pick (1 v 0), less passes defensed and gave up a passer rating of 118 as opposed to 95 for Wilson. Basically neither were very good, neither could make plays
Of course the big reason why Clemons was a better option than Wilson was that he was much much cheaper and he was essentially a first year player so expectations were much lower. Maybe Clemons can improve because he's still young but he sure needs to if he's even to be an average NFL safety

Dolphins teammates say they have noticed a big difference in having Clemons compared with Gibril Wilson, who played free safety last year but was cut after the season.
"(Clemons) has tremendous speed back there. He can easily disguise (coverage) on the far hash and still get to that deep pass on the opposite side of the field," cornerback Sean Smith said. "He's able to cover so much ground compared to what we had last year. That definitely helps out a lot when you talk about disguising coverages."
Strong safety Yeremiah Bell said he has noticed tremendous growth from Clemons.
"He's always been in the right spot this year," Bell said. "I always knew he would be fine, and even last year, he took the initiative to want to learn. So from Day 1 he wanted to learn, and he's put in the hard work."
By the way, Reshad Jones was on my radio show this morning.
He said he wants to be called "Get it on Jones."
I know. Crazy.
Stats have never and will never tell you the whole story.
The people who actually play with Clemons think you are wrong about him not really being an upgrade over Gibril Wilson.
If Clemons can avoid the injuries that plagued him at the end of last season, he will give the Dolphins a very good dilema to have at the FS position.
