Reshad Jones has a leg up on clemons.

i love a playmaker at free safety also...heck its what you want...but if the guys gettin eaten up by vertical speed that invades his area teams are gonna attack it to no end...reshads gonna have to bail early and the qb and wr can break off the route and have anything underneath or if he squats and gets flat footed they'll be hanging 6 burgers on us all night long if the protection holds up...teams are gonna design ways to get him one on one with their burner...

reshads transition screams attack him vertically...he better be in his pedal a lot

that said chris clemons as everyone knows doesn't do much for me...his speed keeps him from being an outright eye sore

Damn hoops, a eye sore is rough

no its not...if the plays in front of him he's solid...if its over his head or to the vertical sideline he's late EVERY TIME...if not for the speed that helps him recover he'd be toast...has no instincts for the vertical passing game...none

I agree 100%.

O

Clemons is far from a sure fire FS. He's solid. I'll take Jones big play ability over him anyday of the week.

Every FS in the NFL will get burned by s speedster. And just about all of them have stiff hips.

Sure-fire as in sure fire to not make many mistakes or give up big plays.

The problem is that when your get in your back pedal quickly, you give up so many options beneath him. The wideout can throw his his head and sink his hips to the comeback and thats a 15-20 yard gain right there. The wideout can even do a double move and burn the crap out of Jones.

The reason why Clemons is a decent option is because he has ridiculous range. His speed allows him to wait until the last second to backpedal. Clemons may be the fastest FS in the league and one of the top in terms of covering ground.

Jones has stiffer hips than Clemons, if thats even possible.

He's still horrid in deep pass defense.

He's not horrid at all. He needs to learn to judge the ball better and attack it. Everytime last year he was in position to make the pick, he wasn't out of the position that much.

On top of that the guy is extremely physical and loves to hit. But not a good ballhawk. Its a good dilemma we have.

Speed is fairly useless if you don't have the instincts or playmaking ability to take advantage of it... It serves no purpose if it's only preventing you from making mistakes, as opposed to FORCING the other team to make mistakes...

Most of the best safeties that have ever played this game weren't fast at all. You can attack just about any safety that's ever played this game matched up vertically with a blazing speedster 1-on-1 and make him look silly... but that's where film study and instincts allow you to overcome that...

Steve Atwater made 8 pro-bowls and should be in the Hall of Fame... he was a 4.6 guy..

John Lynch made 9 pro-bowls, he was a 4.64 guy...

Hell, Rodney Harrison was a 4.8 guy...

I doubt many of you are old enough to remember Kenny Easley... he was a mid 4.5 guy...

Leroy Butler, Darren Sharper, Darren Woodson, Ed Reed, Eugene Robinson, Carnell Lake, Donovan Darius, Carnell Lake, etc... all these guys made a living off of instincts...

I've seen Chris Clemons take plenty of bad angles and give up more big plays than he should, I don't care how fast he is. He's a nice little player, and was a much needed upgrade over Gibril Wilson... but Miami needs a playmaker at the safety position...

You don't really want Reshad Jones in a position where he has to transition and turn and run with speedy receivers down the field... Hell, you don't want Ed Reed turning and running with wide receivers in man coverage either....

However, Reshad Jones is capable of making plenty of plays on the ball in the air in zone coverage, the same way a lot of the best safeties that have ever played this game have...

so slimm you think reshad jones is as instinctual as most of those non speed guys you just named off??? john lynch...darren sharper...leroy butler...atwater...etc...i remember atwater but most of what i remember with him wasn't instincts but knock you into next week physical force

Well we don't really know yet do we? But I think it's a fairly safe assumption that he's the only safety on this roster with the physical tools, instincts and ball skills to perhaps be that type of difference maker in the secondary...

He hasn't failed to capitalize on an opportunity to show that when he was given one.. the kid has always made plays, even at UGA.

He's a 4.5 guy with a little stiffness in his hips... it's not like he's a stump out there...

this guy can get the ball which is a HUGE plus on this defense and could put us over the top. Plus clemons is a SOLID back up. this is a great battle to have.

yeah...i'd agree with that...sure would be nice if he became lawyer milloy...that cat was a bad dude for a while there...reshad though in todays nfl better not lead with the helmet like so much of that uga tape i saw...or he'll be light in the wallet and suspended

I've never seen him lead with his helmet... I've never seen him deliver a bone crushing hit that wasn't legal...

Safeties are safeties because they have a little stiffness in their hips... If they had fluid hips, they'd be cornerbacks..

Guys like Eric Berry, Earl Thomas, and Troy Polamalu who have the fluidity in their hips to get down in the slot and play man coverage on receivers are rare...

Clemons really wasn't an upgrade over Gibril Wilson at all by any reasonable measure. He had less tackles than Wilson, one more missed tackle than Wilson, one more pick (1 v 0), less passes defensed and gave up a passer rating of 118 as opposed to 95 for Wilson. Basically neither were very good, neither could make plays

Of course the big reason why Clemons was a better option than Wilson was that he was much much cheaper and he was essentially a first year player so expectations were much lower. Maybe Clemons can improve because he's still young but he sure needs to if he's even to be an average NFL safety
