Ricky Williams ???s

Ricky is very intelligent. That's all there is to it.

As for worrying about his condition carrying onto the field......DON'T!! Ricky has said that he is SUPREMELY CONFIDENT on the field. For most players, who you are on the field is many times completely different than who you are off the field. It's almost like a different world.

All you have to do is watch the guy play on Sundays to see that he is NOT the shy, misunderstood kid he is everywhere else. Nothing to misunderstand about the way he delivers punishment to defenders.

Why is it that pro sports doesn't question a player who murders, beats his wife, or does/sells drugs, but when a player comes along that has social anxeity disorder people start questioning his character and ability?

I would question anybody who murders or who beats their wife, as for selling drugs, anybody who is in prison for selling grass gets my heartfelt sympathies.

Social Anxiety Disorder has only been discovered and really recognized by the public in the last 10-15 years. 25 years ago if you had those kinds of problems, you were just strange or really depressed to other people. Now they can diagnose your problems and help you overcome them with therapy and/or medication. So being so new to the public eye, when somebody in the spotlight is diagnosed with a personality disorder of any kind, people will tend to stare a little longer at them.

So where are the threads about being questioning the play of Ray Lewis or Jason Kidd(I know hes in the NBA, but its an analogy)?

I think it's because Ray Lewis and Jason Kidd represent cases that had to do with aggression and violence. Those are things that are needed in sports. Ricky's problem was with shyness and attributes that aren't conducive to success in sports.

I understand what you're saying. It seems like pro sport athletes can get away with murder (O.J.) and no one cries foul. Allen Iverson is going through a similar situation right now. I think a lot of it depends on how that player expresses himself publicly. Jason Kidd openly admitted and apologized for what he did and didn't deny a thing. Rae Carruth on the other hand, is serving a life sentence for what happened in his situation. He still claims his innocence. You're right in the respect that it seems like more players get off scott free and their crime is forgotten than otherwise.

I don't think what Ray Lewis did is needed in sports at all! Ricky Williams disorder has no comparison to Ray lewis or Jason Kid.

I wasn't comparing them. I just said why is it that everybody looks the other way with Kidd and Lewis, but they make a big deal out of Ricky?

Let me clarify my post. What I meant by that was this: Football is a violent sport. And if you're a linebacker, you have to be aggressive and violent to succeed at it. So when Ray came back, nobody questioned whether or not he was up to the task of playing football at a high level.

Ricky, on the other hand, is gentle and shy off the field. And "gentle and shy" aren't qualities you equate with a battering ram of a RB.

Ok here it is again for ya dude....

I guess you guys are at a disadvantage right now, because you only get second-hand reports as to how "weird" RW is. RW's "weirdness" really began the minute Mike Ditka proclaimed him the second coming of Walter Payton. Before January of 1999, RW could do no wrong.

You also have to look at the situation he was in New Orleans. The only player ever to constitute a team's entire draft; everyone in New Orleans talking SB, even though back then the Saints were coming off a 6-10 record and never in their history had won as much as a single playof game; then there was Ditka openly proclaiming RW "coach's pet" threatening everyone at camp no to haze RW, which not exactly endeared him with the team; RW rooming alone in camps; then the "wedding" photo in the ESPN mag; to top that off, he gets hurt his first game in preseason (ironically, against the Phins), and never allowed to heal.

But it all really climaxed after that SI interview. Then the New Orleans media and many fans just plain turn ugly. Why?
Because he said he prefered to live in San Antonio than in New Orleans, and wished the Saints moved there... Because he said he was busting his tail out there but his o-line didn't block for him. And , the one some people are still mad about, because he said he liked to visit New Orleans, but he didn't think it was a good place to live in. Even today, you can go to any Saints board and up until today, there are people who just plain hate RW.
Read through this thread http://www.saintsreport.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=34416
at my Saints board and you'll see what I am talking about. ( Warning, there are some Fiedler comments in it :) and see if you can figure out who am I in there :0) Side note: Coach, yes it's me!

But then you see what RW did on the field.
Flashy? Stellar? Superstar? No.
A consistent 4.0 yards per carry with poor blocking? Yes. 4x3=12=1st down, plus opens up the passing game, something foreign to the mind of our Offensive Coordinator extraordinaire Mike Mccarthy, but not to Norv.

And, to me, the most telling: Randy Mueller and Jim Haslett drafted Deuce McAllister (projected top-5 pick who slided due to injuries in Sr. year) to be the starting RB. Jim Haslett wanted McCAllister to start at RB. Randy Mueller and Jim Haslett kept on saying, from the day they drafted McCallister, he was the second coming of Marshall Faulk.
Dulymus McCallister rode the pine all year because he could not unseat RW.

I guess what I am trying to say, is that given RW's anxiety problem, the environment in which he lived for the past 3 years wasn't exactly the best for him.
In Miami, other than the cops checking his garage at midnight, he seems happy. And, as a football fan, I really want to see what RW is going to do on the field when he's happy to be where he is.
