does anyone have stats on when ricky's fumbles occured? it seemed to me that near the end of the season he did not fumble as much. i think it would be interesting to see if he got better as the season went on.

well, just bored and curious....

Ricky had two fumbles in December. One against Chicago (when Urlacher punched it out during Ricky's long run....BTW it rained like hell that night) and one against Oakland. NONE in the last two weeks.

Oh yeah, he had like 3 or 4 against SF his last game in NO. I was in a casino outside New Orleans watching it. NO lost 38-0. Flew home just in time to catch the 2nd half of the Phins azz whooping of Buffalo. :)

if i recall, last season he had 7 lost fumbles. what i'm trying to find out is if they were throughout the season, at the begining or at the end. it seemed that ricky ran harder and with better results near the end of the season. but, did that translate to more lost fumbles? or did he run more solid as the year went on, was he able to hold on better?

Did he really lose 7 fumbles? Thats a lot.

I think the fumbles are just something we're going to have to deal with. He's got to work on it but there's no use gettin down about it. When we first acquired him we all spun his fumble problems as much as possible but we've seen it now, I mean the guy ends up puttin the ball on the ground when a defender makes a pretty good tomahawk. A lot of the times its cuz Ricky's really tryin hard to get the extra yards but thats what makes Ricky what he is man running so hard. Just suffice it to say that if teams start tryin to tomahawk the man a ton rather than going after him with sound fundamental tackling, Ricky will finish the game with 200 yards rushing 2 TDs and 1 fumble with like a billion broken tackles. Would the other team prefer that, or would they just prefer to use sound tackling and wrapping techniques keeping him to 100 yards, 1 TD and no fumbles.

agreed. most of the fumbles were forced very agressively. i do accept that he is going to lose some because of the type of runner he is. my question was what part of the season did most of them occure or were they spread out all season. i am curious because my impression was that he ran very hard at the end of the season and seemed very productive-especially after he was left in for all three downs. i don't remember him losing many if any near the end.

i'll take his 4-7 lost a year if he continues to run like he did last season. no complaints from me...

They were spread out. The longest he went was 3 games without a fumble.

Yeah it was pretty spread out. Thats one thing to keep in mind though when considering our decision to pass the ball 3 times on our own goal line against New England. His fumbling is just part of the package, and ya gotta be smart with it. But its not gonna keep him from being the best runner in the league.

Thanks for the link, BH.

To me, with his productivity, I never felt like his fumbles were as bad as others (McKnight, Minor, Konrad). When you only touch the ball 3 to 6 times a game and you get a fumble - it's a killer. Especially if your productivity is not huge. With Ricky touching the ball 30+ times a game (including passes caught) it's not quite as devastating - though any turnover is bad.

Hopefully he'll improve in that area (I'm sure he knows those stats and will want to get better). But, as has been amply noted, his short arms and their thickness sometimes create problems for him. He more than made up for it last year. Hopefully his yardage and TD production will make up for them this year and hopefully the D will be able to stop his fumbles.

He did have one fumble near the goal line - but I can't recall if that was against the Bears or the Jets. I don't recall any of his fumbles being "game-breakers."

Like Da_'Fins said i didn't think Ricky fumbles were a problem last year. Sure it cost us in the Jets game (but he had the knee on the ground) and a couple of other time like the fumble at the goal line Da_'Fins is talking (he was down by contact again). I remember some other plays that for me were worse. McMichael had a fumble trying to strech for half a yard more. Carter dropping a couple of passes. Lucas being pick by Buffalo (more like giving the football). The infamous 4th and 1 against Minnesota. The Chambers TD catch that he didn't have possession ???...

What do we expect? We have 80 year old guys out there trying to call penalties at a in a very fast paced game..

I doubt these guys can even drive carefully..

I just hope they did some kind of re-vamping or SOMETHING, because last year was HORRIBLE on penalties (not just for us).
