It's not enough to want a long term, Hall of Fame solution at coach. You have to have some clue how to go about finding said coach. I have no confidence in Ross to get that done. Was Fisher guaranteed to restore glory to the Dolphins? No, as much as I wanted Fisher here, there are no guarantees in the NFL. But you couldn't have faulted Ross for landing him.
Ross horribly bungled the Harbaugh pursuit last year. Then, adding insult to Sparano's injury, Ross fired him during the season (after things were looking up and the team improving) in order to get a head-start on the pursuit for top coaching candidates. Ross struck out on the top candidates. It seems like this was in large part because Ross only did half the job in axing Sparano early -- by wedding himself to Ireland and proclaiming his untouchable GM status, Ross essentially closed the door on the top coaching candidates. Any fool could have told him this -- it was all over these boards as soon as his presser with Ireland was done. Ross knows who to target (Harbaugh, Fisher), but seems to have no idea how to go about getting them. My impression of Ross is that he's tone deaf, bumbling, and probably places his loyalty in the wrong people.
I hope against hope that we luck into the next Sean Payton or Mike McCarthy or John Harbaugh. We might. But the reality is, even if we get that guy, it's going to be blind luck, not because Ross targeted him with conviction.
