Ross is NFL's 3rd richest owner

I'm willing to bet 90% of professional sports owners known nothing about the respective sport apart from the average fan.

At the end of the day its a business. Ross isin't calling the plays or scouting talent.

90% (or more) of sports franchise owners share something Ross doesn't possess.. true passion for the game. When that is in evidence, decisions made by the owner - for the team & fans, are less inclined to be f'd up. Ross is a fan, true that.. but look at whom he surrounds himself with in terms of this franchise. Baseball guys from San Diego; office pokes from Related Co.. none of his lieutenants are Miamians, South Floridians.. or Floridians period; their not endeared to the community, except for the paycheck.

Bob Kraft, Pat Bowlen, the Mara's, the Rooney's, the Irsay's, Jerry Jones.. Micky Arison; they attack the game with a passion.. for their teams - for their fans. Ross doesn't work that way. He runs the team, like a Related Co. asset. They're gonna do, what they're gonna do.. so what if you don't like it. They own it.

Agreed, but you are listing team owners that built franchises from the ground up. It's hard for someone to put heart and soul into a business they just bought a few years back (instead of viewing it as a source of income).

Its a very thin line a owner has to walk. Too little passion and he looks disconected from the fans/media/traditions etc..., too much passion and he can make a rash, emotional decision that turns out for the worst.

For example, say when Brady starts his decline (if not already) and Kraft keeps him around for a few more years because he is Brady, and all he did for the team/franchise etc. What then? Does being the "emotional" owner we all want become a liability? I would think so.

A little update on where Ross ranks amongst his fellow NFL owners. Obvioulsy Paul Allen(Seahawks) is the richest and his worth is $15.9 billion. Stan Kroenke(Rams) is second with $5.6 billion and Ross is third at $5.4 billion.

For comparison sakes, Woody Johnson(Jets) is 5th at $3.5 billion Jerry Jones(Cowboys) is 7th at $3 billion, Robert Kraft(Patriots) is 8th at $2.9 billion and Ralph Wilson(Bills) is 30th at $870 million. Jerry Richardson(Panthers) has the least at $500 million.

Keep this in mind with the news that Ross is footing the bill on the proposed $400 million renovation. The Renovation is almost as much as Richardson's entire wealth. Let's just be happy that we have an owner that can afford to pay his players big money and put large amounts of money into the stadium.

Agreed. But Nublar, its all $hit without victories, brotha. You know this and it goes without saying.

So he's ahead of jerr 'Ah.

Didn't Jerr'ah finance Jerry World himself?

Two out of the top 3 own mediocre NFL franchises. P. Allen seems to have gotten it right. In a small market no less!

Didn't happen overnight. Owned them 17 years before they won the Super Bowl. He owned the Hawks 11 years before Ross bought the Phins. Give Ross time, he's pretty much "hands off" and is not afraid to spend his money. Very similar to Paul Allen. Remember, it took Allen 7 years before they had double digit wins and have only done that 5 times in 17 years. Give Ross credit, he is trying, and all they do on the boards is hammer the poor guy. It could be a hell of a lot worse, we could be stuck with Jerry Jones.

The first 5 years of Allen's ownership are irrelevant. Once the best fan-impact stadium in the league opened in 2002, Seattle has 5 double-digit win seasons in 12 years plus two others with 9 wins.

Yeah, Jerry Jones as Dolphins owner would be a tragedy. Who would want a stadium like that? Jones initially planned to dump big money into patching Texas Stadium. At the time, mid '90s, Texas Stadium was roughly the same age as our current dump, although it was a better design to begin with so it had more staying power. Jones wisely thought better of it and started searching for a location for a new venue. Then once he found the location he pushed through the tax initiative to fund half the stadium costs while promising to pay for any overruns, which provided to be massive, in fact slightly higher than the taxpayer portion.

I disagreed with this statement at first, but you make some valid points. Hmm. A positive thing is that Ross isn't making moves based on his ego, and seems to learn from his mistakes.

I don't understand how this article can put Jerry Richardson at a net worth of $500 million, when he is the sole owner of an NFL franchise worth over $1 billion. I dont think you could be worth less than the sum of your assets.

He isn't the sole owner. He is the principal owner (NFL makes that designation at 30%).

Two things: He has minority partners and he has given interests to his children for estate planning.

Two years ago, we complained about public money and you killed us for saying that no public money should go to billionaires. You wanted public money and did not find Ross at fault for not using his own wealth.

Now, you are all for Ross using his own money.

LOL.

How the hell do you know that Stephen Ross has no passion for the game? I happen to totally disagree. I see him as a real fan who enjoys going to every game. OK he's quiet and low key and not an owner fan like George Steinbrenner (who would visibly explode if someone screwed up, he'd get them on the phone - that's passionate) or Jerry Jones (who enjoys making the calls as GM down to which players are on the practice squad) or Mark Cuban (who prefers to sit with the fans abusing the refs than quietly watch from the luxury suite) or Irsay (who has a future career as a gossip tweeter). I guess that Jimmy Haslem gets a good passionate rating because he has fired 3 GMs and 3 Head Coaches in about 4 years. He also happens to be facing the prospect of jail with senior employees lining up to implicate him in the tax fraud by his Pilot Flying J business.
Be thankful that we have a very good owner.

It's easy to see that he has no passion for the game...

Remember that picture that was taken of him pretending to throw a football?

Just look at the expression on his face in that pic,

he is basically saying look at how ridiculous this game is...

Just look at everything he has said about the Dolphins storied history,

you can tell he doesn't have a clue.

Just look at how eager he always is to speak to the media under a Dolphins banner.

What other owner is that eager to put his face and voice in front of an NFL franchise?

I can only think of one.

IMO for a man that dosent care about his football team he sure is spending the hell out of his money to make the upgrades needed , maybe he wanted into the NFL and didnt know nothing , but he is wanting to learn and is determing to win .....

Now if only owners were allowed to use that money lol

Please eliminate that thought. The great thing about the NFL is that there is a salary cap and it helps to build an even competition.
Average players are now making like $5M per season. The money is ridiculous and doesn't need to be rapidly escalated. We will see more and more suicides and mental health related issues partly because of these excesses.
