Royals Agrees to Terms

I think Turk is overrated by some of you. Royals and Turk are almost the same, they average the same amount of yards a punt.

all of you make good arguments, but the point is we pay Mare a lot of money so we were not going to pay our P lots of money as well. If Turk would have taken a more reasonable deal, he w/b back, but he wants big P $$$ and that's not coming from our FO; and rightfully so with needs at 4th CB and on both lines.

Whoops was looking at postseason #'s  Doesn't matter anyways as I wasn't here supporting my case for either Turk or Royals.

Blitz as I said your argument about the Ray Guy Award was invalid. I don't give a rats ass if the guy won the award or not. That doesn't say anything about whether the guy can punt. The point was that Stemke had nothing on Travis. Stemke won the Ray Guy award with a 43.9 avg whereas Travis had a 48.47 avg and most draft experts figure these 2 guys are "worth" drafting in a league where punters are rarely if ever drafted.

As for Dave he had a 44.6 yard avg and this line makes me smirk from the overview on punters at CBS Sportsline:

"REMINDS YOU OF… Mark Royals, Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Very few flaws, if any in his game.

GAZING INTO THE CRYSTAL BALL… Should be one of two specialists taken in the draft, with the Vikings a likely suitor. "

So why pay for Mark Royals if you can get a similar guy for half the cap hit and a 1/3rd of the overall cost.

Van, punters don't win the Ray Guy award unless they were one of the best punters in college. And my point is still that just because a guy can punt well in college does not mean he is going to punt well in the pros. As such, it's a bit of a reach drafting a punter in the later rounds, usually.

Should we bring in an undrafted guy to compete with Royals? Sure, but I don't think we should use one of our few picks on a punter.

Hehe and my point is that these 2 are actually considered "draftable" and will be drafted in the 6th rounder unlike previous years. Possibly higher for Travis.

Some team with many draft picks might end up drafting one of them. As for us, we only have five draft picks. I really don't think we should draft a punter.

The glaring difference between Matt Turk and Mark Royals is this:

Matt Turk 38 yards per punt net average.

Mark Royals 33 yards per punt net average.

Turk gets much more hang time, which allows his coverage to get down the field, which keeps the return to a minimum gain.

Turk was also first in the league in punts downed inside the 20, which is very important for a team that wants to play the field position game.

What's silly is that the only thing that held up a deal with Turk was that he wanted $150,000 in signing bonus where Miami was only offering $125,000. $25,000 kept Turk from signing with Miami or Miami resigning Turk, whichever way you want to look at it.

It was more then that. Turk's agent is just passing it off on that. There was 2 other key areas in the contract one of which being incentives too.

So Blitz you don't think if one of those 2 punters are around in the 7th we draft them? I mean really when was the last time a 7th rounder really contributed on this team? Chances are we draft a guy who will never make the opening day roster with that.

It sure as hell wasn't Brent Bartholomew.

I'll toss my two cents in, for the heck of it. I think Turk is a much better punter than Royals because of hang time alone. That being said, I think that Wanny and Speilman are making sure we have a somewhat decent punter this year and signed Royals for insurance. I believe we will draft a punter this year if one of the two mentioned above are there, towards the end. Of course, if someone drops who is rated higher we may go that way, depending on his position.
:D  :D

We paid a bunch for our punter and I'd support VanDolPhan - the Steelers offense lives and dies on field position and a good punter is fundamental to our gameplan. So's an accurate kicker but I'm not certain that Petersen will be that.

Royals used to punt for Pittsburgh and did a solid enough job - he's just getting old. But if you want a guy that won't make the mistakes for minimal $$$s then he's your guy.

Bottom line, would you rather take a chance on a 6th or 7th round position player, knowing what kind of quality you get there, or would you rather take a player who was one of the best in the nation as a punter?
If you are looking to improve your team, who do you think would have a better chance of making the roster?
All kidding aside, I don't think it would be a bad idea to draft one of the two punters being mentioned.
Like KB21 was saying, Turk had a cannon for a leg which resulted in excellent coverage from our special teams. Royals is not as strong and unlike some here, I think that is more important than accuracy to a degree. You can possibly teach some one to be accurate moreso than you can teach leg strength, so if one of those young guys can come in and kick the crap out of the ball and unseat Royals, then we save money, improve the team and possibly have a really good young punter for a few years.
The alternative? Royals holds off the challenge, we send punter A or B to wherever Otis Leverrette went, and we have a good solid inexpensive veteran punter for the season.
Sort of a win win situation.

Yup but we still got a 7th rounder back when we traded him to Chicago. All I am saying is if we can get one of the 2 in the 7th round then we pull the trigger and let those 2 compete. If Royals beats the kid out then I am sure we can get that 7th round back next year in a trade if we just hold on to the kid for a year as backup.
