RUMOR: Sherman Not Popular with Offense

Sorry, but I don't get how professional football players would NOT be upset with being poorly utilized and the offensive gameplans being a recipe for failure in the second half of the last couple games. It's obvious to the fans and surely obvious to the players, and these are the guys who livelihood and job performance depends on this. Their jobs and their future financial security depends on their performance and what they are able to out on tape, so it's incredibly natural to be upset because it is more than entertainment to them. It's their career.

Sure, it's "professional" to just bear it and still give your all...but I'm sure most of us here work, and we have probably all been asked to do things in our job or departments that didn't utilize the skills of ourselves and co-workers the best, and limited our chances at success, and it is extremely frustrating, especially when you know later on those same bosses who gave you a poor strategy are going to berate your for "your" failure. That doesn't mean that you or anyone else actively decides to give less effort, but when you don't feel excited or like what you are going to do is going to be as productive as it could be, it affects the 100 percent that you are still trying to give but just don't have the enthusiasm to fully realize.

Well I never thought id see the day where we had a sherman supporter. Please go ahead and watch just ONE game from this year and then give your input. One must not speak on a subject if they are not privy to it.
Nothing like a bunch of millionaires throwing hissy fits...that mean ole coach!

True but Sherman definitley does not put the players in a position to succeed. it has to be so easy for defenses to read our offense
Sherman could put them in better spots, but I find it funny that they'd be bitching about the offensive coordinator when we're what, third in the NFL in drops and turning the ball over like crazy?

Yeah, that's Mike Sherman's fault.

So to best utilize Wallace is Sherman supposed to call plays where Tannehill scrambles around for awhile breaking tackles then heaves it deep. Seems that's where Wallace has done most of his damage right? I hate killing the coordinator when players don't execute. Finheaven has a vivid history of protecting the QB and slamming everything else when things go wrong. We saw the sale thing with Henne.

No weapons
Bad coordinator
Some posters question QB most think their nuts
Most posters question QB, a few hold out hope

I said in the offseason that if the site is all over Sherman by week 8 that's a bad sign.

As for Wallace, bad signing. This shouldn't surprise anyone with Ireland pulling the strings. He will be what we see now and was last season all year, average.

Packer fans were screaming for Sherman to be fired because of his horrible play calling. They know exactly how we feel. Sherman needs to be sent packing.

Sherman failed to utilize Reggie Bush last year when he was the most talented player on the offense. This year, instead of letting the receivers change positions, or moving around, or trying to get them in space, he runs them the same way every time, resulting in a deep route where Wallace gets double covered. There is absolutely nothing innovative about this offense. The fact that I, an average football mind in terms of X's and O's, can point this out means that every defensive coordinator in the league knows exactly what to do to disrupt the offense.

Miami's first half was a product of New England trying to bring pressure with 4, where Miami's line actually did a good job protecting. The second half rolls around and what do you know, Miami thought it was sitting fat and happy giving Tannehill protection, when the Patriots decided to change the gameplan to bring more pressure. It caused confusion, free blitzers, zero time and zero offense. 100% on Sherman and Philbin to be one step ahead. New England caught onto the trend, and Miami for some reason didn't anticipate that, and whiffed completely on the counter punch (there actually was no counter punch).

Get me an offensive coordinator who can move guys around freely and get them in space. Not this unflexible nonsense. Offensive parts should be interchangeable. This offense is like pulling the wrong block on Jenga - it all comes tumbling down when something changes.

I'm not a Sherman supporter and I think he needs to be let go at years end. But I do sympathize with him in certain regards. Namely our offense has really been hamstrung by the offensive line and has totally limited Sherman's playcalling. Sherman pretty much has to run his offense from shotgun, and even then he can call nothing but short to intermediate routes. It seems anytime he calls for something deep, tannehill gets killed off the edge.

One thing I've been confused about is the wr's all lining up in set spots. They were all supposed to be interchangeable according to everything we heard from Philbin. And there's hardly ever motion. One thing I noticed happening all the time it seemed, was that Brandon Gibson yelling over to Mike Wallace and telling him his routes, or showing him wear to line up. Sheer speculation on my part, but honestly, I really don't believe Wallace knows the playbook still, and perhaps that too has limited Sherman.

On the flip side, the biggest reason I think Sherman needs to go, is it just seems like we're running a college style playbook regardless. No misdirection whatsoever.

Sherman is being hampered by a bad players responsible for protecting the QB, that includes the RBs, the o-line, the TEs and the QB himself. He's also being hampered by Philbin's philosophy which is we should pass 100% when the defense dictates we pass. And he's also being hampered by his own suckiness as an offensive coordinator.

That all adds up to the 28th ranked offense in the league and the lowest 2 year ranking in Dolphins history.

O line sucks plus bad play calling on third and short.

So beat writers are confirming that Sherman is not very popular within the organization right now.

I've said it in the VIP Chat, and I'll say it here. Mike Sherman is reminding me of Mike Martz after the Rams fired him as head coach. He had 3 coordinating jobs after that, but he always viewed himself as a head coach and his decisions with playcalling ended up alienating him from his players and other coaches.

The biggest problem with Sherman is not that he's an overall bad OC, it's his inability to adjust the gameplan on the fly to account for what the other team is doing. For several weeks now, teams make half-time adjustments that throw a wrench in Sherman's game-plan and he either does absolutely nothing to adjust or over-compensates and goes totally opposite from what was working. Watch teams like the Saints, Pats and S.F. and their ability to adjust to what teams are trying to do to them. THATS how you run an NFL team.

Forgetting the occasional ridiculous play call, the biggest problem with Sherman is the overall philosophy. For this team to be successful, I knew they'd have to run the ball well and often. We've been moderately efficient - averaging 4.1 YPC. No other team averaging over 4.0 YPC has run the ball LESS than Miami. The Saints, by contrast, are averaging just 3.4 YPC, but they have 27 more rushing attempts on the season. In fact, two teams in the top-10 in rushing yards have a lower YPC than Miami (Buffalo and Carolina with 4.0 each).

Our RB's aren't great, but Thomas has looked his best since his rookie season, and Miller is running pretty well. And if any team needed to run the ball to protect its passing game, it's the Miami Dolphins. The next HC/OC/whomever in charge of the offense has to commit to the run. Don't get me wrong. I'm not asking for a Tony Sporano bland, predictable attack. The running game SHOULD set up explosive plays. I really liked that Sherman ran the ball on 2nd and short-to-mid in the 1st half of the New England game. I loved the timing of the rushing attack, and it was working. We lose a little momentum, and we forget about the run completely. Where's the poise?

Sure it's a rumor but how can Sherman possibly be popular with this team? All the crap we heard about, "Well, Wallace is being double teamed" etc...I don't care. You find a way to get him the ball. Sherman is the same genius who ran Reggie Bush like a power back even though everyone knows his strengths are getting him out in space and catching the ball. I can't stand that guy.

It would be weird for the players to be pissed off with Sherman for not running enough since every indication we've had until now is that our pass first philosophy comes directly from Philbin.
