If Ireland doesn't have control of the personnel. Then who does?
If you fire Sparano, imo you have to fire Ireland as well.
With that said, there are quite a few people lately that do not agree with that thought. In fact, just in the past week, two well known people Drew Rosenhaus and Adam Schefter have come to Ireland's defense and have made a case that he should stay even though Sparano is/will be gone.
Rosenhaus called him one of the most knowledgeable GM's in the league and that everytime he talks to him he comes away extremely impressed. I was listening to an interview on WQAM's website from last week with Adam Schefter, and when the host said that it was "likely" that Ireland would be fired Schefter said not so fast. He gave some praise and brought up the comparison of Martin Mayhew with the Lions. Schefter cited that Mayhew was Matt Millen's right hand man and Lions fans were pissed that the organization kept him. Turns out it was a very good move not to dump him.
We also have to keep in mind that up until last September that Ireland was not calling 100% of the shots in making roster decisions and draft picks. Even this year he is not 100% in control because Sparano has some say on the roster also(hello Colombo signing). Is Ireland perfect? No. Should the Dolphins go in a different direction? Possibly. Is it a disaster if he stays on in some capacity? I don't think so. Someone like Gruden is not going to come here without having some say on who the team signs and drafts, so it is not like Ireland is going to have full control. As many have said, this past draft is looking like it might be the best one overall since he arrived in 2008. A Gruden/Ireland or hopefully a Cowher/Ireland could work.
interesting point of view...does anyone know why gruden and tampa parted ways when they did??? i'm interested in knowing if there's any dirt on him...i do know that gruden is a players coach at least it looks that way to me...when you hear him commentate games everyones a damn pro bowler it seems if you listen to him talk...and i seem to recall him having a real thing for long in the tooth veterans on his team...

This doesn't surprise me, because Ross is totally clueless. So prepare to bring Gruden in, with all the buzz, and for a follow up season of mediocrity because Jeff Ireland as usual will have brought in the WRONG players.
Cowher will only come in if he as some sort of assurances that he will have control. He has too much leverage. I am not necessarily enamored with the emperor Cowher idea. His success came after a very long tenure in one of the strongest frachises in the NFL. How much of their success was Cowher?
If I remember correctly, Cowher was the HC & GM in Pittsburgh so I would say that after his long tenure most all of their success was due to Cowher. I also think that a lot of the Steelers subsequent success was due to Cowher as well. With that being said, I am not too keen on having the HC fill any more roles than just HC. I am adamantly opposed to a HC/coordinator, which is my concern with Chucky...he may want to be HC and OC. Our team is such a mess that I think we need a GM & HC to steer this sinking ship away from the storm. It will be all that they can do in their respective roles to keep their heads above water. If we keep Ireland and get Chucky as coach, I would be happy regardless of who has "Final" say. I think that Ireland has had his hands tied much of his tenure with the Fins and will give him a pass on the crap free agents...for now. With that being said, if we can Ireland as a condition of signing a top HC it would not bother me as long as a solid GM is brought in to accompany the coach.

Cowher was never GM in Pittsburgh. He had Terry Donahue and Kevin Colbert in Pittsburgh. The rumors have been that Cowher would demand that one of his guys from Pittsburgh be hired as GM or VP of football Operations. The rumored names were the Pitt GM "Very Underrated" Kevin Colbert or the Director of Business and Administrations Omar Kahn.
Can we poach an executive for a lateral position?
Don't get me wrong I would LOVE to get Kevin Colbert.
A Cowher/Colbert combo would be as solid an option for Miami to rebuild as possible.
